Jackson County native Laurie Hueneke Martens,
who trots the globe for Merck & Co. Inc. when
she’s not tending to her family farm outside of
St. Donatus, travels to countries ranging from
South Africa and Japan to Brussels and Brazil as
she works to develop domestic and international
policy related to animal health. Top left: Standing
Profitability and Sustainability
As a global company, Merck
employs people around
the world who travel for
their jobs. Hueneke Martens
is just one example of that.
“We look for the best talent
we can get, and we make
accommodations,” DeLuca
said. “The fact that she
travels extensively around
the world and balances what
we need – nothing ever
doesn’t get done – and can
work on the family farm
with her husband and child
is amazing.”
At home on the farm,
Laurie dons jeans and work
boots and chats easily about
the flowers and plants she
tends to as part of the home’s
