fitness & Farming
Squat
Stand with feet shoulder-width
apart. Sit back like you are
sitting in an imaginary chair,
lowering your thighs so they
are as parallel to the floor as
possible with your knees over
your ankles. Press your weight
into your heels and push to
bring yourself back to the
starting position.
Lunge
Start in a standing position with
shoulders back and relaxed
and chin up. Step forward with
one leg, lowering hips until
both knees are bent to about
a 90-degree angle. Keep your
front knee directly above your
ankle. Push back up to starting
position.
are proud grandparents to
Aleena, 6, Kinley, 3, Ryleigh,
eight months, and are blessed
with a fourth grandchild on
the way.
Paul grew up on a farm,
so it is in his blood. He has a
plant soil science degree from
Southern Illinois University;
however, what his degree
did not prepare him for was
the physical toll that farming
would take on his body.
Fitness is an integral part
of farming as the body can
be used as a “machine” to do
the work, such as carrying
5-gallon buckets of water
and slinging 50 lb. bags of
feed. Farming has physical
challenges no matter if it is
manual labor or machine
operation: Repetitive movements
such as bending and
lifting, pushing/pulling,
rotating and looking over
shoulders while operating a
farm vehicle, sitting in weird
positions, climbing in and out
of a tractor/combine will all
work the muscles, affecting
the spine and joints.
So what do they do to keep
farm fit?
Outside of the physical
work they do on the farm,
they take a strength class at
the YMCA (Les Mills Bodypump),
a cardio class (Les
Mills RPM, indoor cycling),
swim, lift weights, and, of
course, playing with the
grandchildren can always be
