THE SUBJECTS
Edexcel 9PL0 Mr M Hill
POLITICS
Politics students will seek to understand these issues and then
form their own opinions on them. This is why Politics students
are encouraged to actively engage with these debates and
arguments in and out of class. It is therefore important to have
a keen interest in the current political landscape and enjoy lively
discussions
Politics is a highly regarded academic A Level which sits very
well with other subjects such as History, Geography and
Economics.
UK Politics
While we cherish our democracy so much, why is voting
participation so low in the UK? Do our parties really represent
out views or are pressure groups far more effective in this
modern fast paced internet age? Can Parliament really
represent minorities when it is controlled by the government
parties?
This unit introduces students to the ways that governments
communicate with the people, looking at the current UK
system and assessing how democratic and representative it is.
Students will be asked to develop a critical understanding of the
role and effectiveness of the key institutions.
Political Ideas
This unit allows students to explore the three traditional political
ideas of conservatism, liberalism and socialism and one
additional idea. Students will learn about the core ideas and
principles and how they apply in practice to human nature, the
state, society and the economy, the divisions within each idea
and their key thinkers.
Global Politics
Is the USA a power in decline? How has globalisation reshaped
international politics? Is military power obsolete in global
politics? What is the significance of the ‘War on Terror’, nuclear
proliferation and weapons of mass destruction? How can
imbalances in global poverty be solved?
This unit provides an introduction to global politics by examining
the key political structures and systems and evaluating their
effectiveness in dealing with global political issues.
