General Assembly. Students are presented with
their assignments in advance of conferences
and then research is carried out so that they
can debate with their fellow delegates, staying
true to the actual position of the member
country they represent. Churcher’s is hoping
to host its very first MUN Conference this year
and we have a highly committed team looking
for new recruits to join them.
Young Enterprise
The Young Enterprise Scheme gives Lower
Sixth students the opportunity to ‘Learn by
Doing’ and run their own businesses. This
requires them to set up their own companies,
sell shares to investors, manage cash flow,
develop, make and sell a product or service,
interact with the wider community and
eventually make a profit, or indeed a loss! The
School is very fortunate to have experienced
business Advisers who attend the weekly
meetings and give guidance and invaluable
advice on how to set up and run a ‘mini’
enterprise. This year there were four individual
companies set up by the enterprising students
and they did exceptionally well. ‘Well Prepared’
sold a unique brand of casual shirts known as
the ‘Shlirt’ and won ‘Best Product’ at the South
Hampshire Area Final held at the Ageas Bowl.
‘Magnetic’ sourced a very popular water bottle
that held fruit to add to the flavour and achieved
excellent sales results. ‘Blu’ made their own
responsibly sourced jewellery and sold this at a
number of trade fairs along with their range of
candles and bath salts. ‘Eclipse’ also sold candles
which proved extremely popular throughout the
seasonal period.
Overall, these companies learned a huge amount
from the experience of trading as a company. It
is not easy to make a profit in any business and
for Young Enterprising students who are learning
the ropes the challenge of turning the business
round meant having to make many decisions in a
tough market place. The students can of course
choose to keep the profit but full credit goes to
the students who made the decision to support
charitable causes.
