Churcher’s College Lecture Theatre.
Senior Philosophical Society
The Senior Philosophical Society meets informally once a
week for tea and twice yearly to hear a variety of outside
speakers expand aspects of the Ethics and Philosophy
course. The emphasis is on making education enjoyable and
enabling all to enter into discussion should they so wish. A
recent speaker was Post-Graduate Cambridge student Bertie
Probyn (OC) who took us through the current conundrum
of The Paradox of Increase. Students also went to the New
College of the Humanities in London, to hear Derren Brown
speak on the subject ‘Happy’. Students are also given
preferable treatment in terms of attending our pre-social
events with our Invited Grill Lecture speakers. Lately we had
the honour of spending valuable time with Lord Ashdown.
These outside speaker events (preceded by drinks and
nibbles) are happy social occasions with challenging
academic rigour. The meetings are open to everyone
(including parents) and all Oxbridge and Medical applicants
are strongly advised to attend.
