Grateful
for others’
generosity
Quite literally life-changing
is how former Brooklands resident Kathryn Jackson
describes the Red Cross hardship and storage grants they
received after the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes.
Kathryn, her husband Andy, and their son Cam were living in
the now red-zoned northern Christchurch suburb and had just
received approval to extend their “dream home” when the
September 2010 earthquake hit.
As the weeks of chaos with no running water or amenities
progressed and their land was declared red-zoned, the
Jacksons received a storage grant that paid for a shipping
container to be placed on land they bought near Amberley.
They then built a small sleep-out – “an escape bolt-hole” – that
they lived in while their future home was constructed nearby.
Now happily settled in the Hurunui, the Jacksons will eternally
be grateful for the small financial difference New Zealand
Red Cross made to their lives, made possible by the generous
donations Red Cross received through its 2011 Canterbury
Earthquake Appeal.
The Jacksons’ story is one that rings true with thousands of
families who faced loss, hardship and life-altering circumstances
after the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes.
Immediately after the quakes struck, New Zealand Red Cross
established the Appeal and received more than $131 million
in donations from people, businesses and Red Cross societies
around the world.
Through those donations New Zealand Red Cross has
helped one in five Cantabrians with their recovery from the
earthquakes. As well as a wide range of grants to target specific
needs in the community, Red Cross regularly knocked on doors
across the city, provided well-being workshops and messaging
and worked closely with a range of specialist community
organisations to improve the lives of those who might have
otherwise gone unnoticed.
In collaboration with Star Media, Red Cross has launched a
suite of videos called “10 Good Stories” that highlights the
good work done through the greater Christchurch Earthquake
Recovery Programme between 2011 and 2016. You can watch
