Keynote address: The Future of Commercial Vehicles
Tuesday, March 6, 8:45–9:30 a.m.
Presenting sponsor:
Today, the vehicles used to support fleet operations are evolving at an unprecedented pace. New chassis designs,
technology and fuel options are changing the landscape of vehicle design, sourcing and field deployment. Hear from
Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of General Motors Fleet, on how rapid changes in product development are driving
innovation in commercial vehicles and changing working relationships between chassis OEMs and fleet managers.
Presented by: Ed Peper, U.S. Vice President, General Motors Fleet
Smart, Connected Vehicles and the Impact on Fleet Operations
Tuesday, March 6, 9:30–10:45 a.m.
The influx of capturable equipment data (i.e., vehicle health updates, location and road conditions, driver behavior and
operating parameters) requires fleet managers to evolve their strategies and routines. During this session, fleet experts will
identify the features and characteristics of connected vehicles influencing management skills, techniques and requirements.
Attendees will learn how the new information can be used to improve operating strategies for increasing fleet reliability and
decreasing costs; real-time trend analysis to allow performance and reliability predictions; and diagnostic routines. The
discussion will cover skills needed to effectively manage a data-rich environment, including the ability to identify important
elements in a data array; recognize and create exception management procedures to prevent data overload; and develop
communication tools and techniques for sharing important findings with fleet customers.
Representative
Reactive vs. Predictive Maintenance: Taking Control of Your Future
Tuesday, March 6, 11 a.m.–noon
While available equipment data cannot forecast all issues, the new wave of real-time (or near-real-time) information presents
an opportunity to fundamentally change how equipment is maintained. In this session, identify new skills needed to ensure
a smooth transition from reactive to predictive fleet management. Moving toward an analytics-based approach is a solid
strategy for continuous improvement — providing insights that can change equipment design and materials, and indicate
early failure potential. Attendees will explore outcomes of a successful predictive maintenance strategy, including improved
reliability and reduced workflow disruption.
Generation Next Leadership Workshop and
Networking Reception: Ego vs. EQ — How Top
Leaders Beat 8 Ego Traps with Emotional Intelligence
Wednesday, March 7, 3–5 p.m.
Successful managers and leaders leverage the power of EQ (emotional intelligence) to engage and motivate their employees
and associates. Leaders with high EQ can communicate effectively, provide balanced feedback, guide others through
ambiguity, use humor to build rapport, read and respond to the team’s leadership needs and remain optimistic, even in
the face of difficulty. These leaders can emotionally and mentally plug into others, read the situation at hand and behave
accordingly to get the best results for everyone.
Studies show a direct correlation between high EQ and successful leadership. But managers can fall into particular pitfalls
that hurt their credibility and hard-won success, impeding the ability to use their EQ. This presentation provides strategies
for building a strong case for the importance of both IQ and EQ. Attendees will leave with practical examples and new skills
as they learn about the unique traps that can trip up even the most successful leaders, and the ways to avoid them. Jen will
explain why EQ is particularly hard to maintain at management levels, and share how to escape the most common ego traps
to increase your leadership effectiveness.
Presented by: Jen Shirkani, Author and Keynote Speaker, Penumbra Group
Ticket required. This session is not included in any registration package — it is available for purchase separately.
LTAP Fleet Educational Program: The Work Truck
in the Work Zone
Thursday, March 8, 8:30–10:30 a.m.
When we were young, we were told not to play in traffic. But let’s not kid ourselves — in our industry, we make our living
working in traffic.
Whether you operate a service truck, dump body, aerial lift or snowplow, it’s imperative to make distracted drivers aware
of you, your work truck and your work zone. Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) developed a training
session specifically for the workforce with the difficult task of working on or along America’s roads and highways. Our trainer
will cover approved signage, equipment and personal protective measures that, when used correctly, send a clear and
consistent message to drivers.
While we do not recommend playing in traffic, there is still a job to be done and ways to increase awareness and improve
safety in the work zone.
Moderated by: Richard Domonkos, Training Manager, Indiana LTAP, Purdue University, Lyles School of Civil Engineering
Presented by: Todd Morrison, P.E., Technology Transfer Engineer, Technology Transfer/KY LTAP, University of
Kentucky, Transportation Center
Ticket required. This session is not included in any registration package — it is available for purchase separately.
Lean 201: The Kata Journey — Daily Practice for Scientific Thinking,
Mindset and Culture
Thursday, March 8, 9:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
Earlier approaches to lean focused on describing techniques at Toyota, but this is not how people acquire new ways
of thinking and acting. Toyota Kata concentrates on developing scientific thinking skills and mindsets — and modifying
an organization’s culture — through a process of daily practice coached by line managers. Improvement Kata (IK) and
Coaching Kata (CK) make the process transferrable beyond Toyota, to any organization.
Kata are structured routines practiced deliberately, so their pattern becomes a habit and leaves you with new skills on
which to build. Practicing IK/CK does not displace current improvement methods — it builds foundational skills to make you
better at any method used.
In this session, Mike Rother will discuss research findings that are the foundation of the Toyota Kata book series. In
addition, Arkansas Manufacturing Extension Partnership and a manufacturing client will share their Kata journey.
Takeaways include understanding how individuals, teams and organizations develop new skills and mindsets; a four-step
pattern for establishing target conditions and working scientifically through obstacles; and a pattern for managers to follow in
teaching IK in daily work, so it becomes part of an organization’s culture.
Attendees will have the chance to participate in a 90-minute exercise modeling each step of the IK pattern.
Identifying Fleet-Ready
Technologies to Avoid Risk When
Deploying Electrified Vehicles
Thursday, March 8, 9:30–10:45 a.m.
To meet sustainability requirements, more fleets are seeking
electrified vehicle solutions that are outside the OEM box,
including aftermarket upfits and vehicles from start-up
OEMs. To avoid unnecessary risk when deploying electrified
vehicles, fleet managers want fleet-ready technologies that
are reliable, integrate seamlessly into operations and won’t
affect OEM warranty. A panel of national fleet managers
will discuss available options and explain what fleet-ready
means to them and how it reduces risk. Hear best practices
from fleets that purchased tried-and-true OEM vehicles with
electrified upfits — making their trucks, vans and shuttles
more fuel-efficient and cleaner, while leaving their OEM
powertrain (engine, transmission, and fuel and exhaust
systems) completely intact.
