Peer
Pressure!
I’m not sure if the platform of Lansdowne
has ever been occupied by a Baroness and
Founder Chancellor of Bournemouth
University, but this month, November 4/5,
we can look forward to that! Baroness Cox
is part of a stellar cast during a strategic
weekend which we are calling, Voice for
the Voiceless.
The Peer of the Realm will be joined on the
Sunday evening, by a Professor and
advisor to the UN on global health, an
International Relief worker with the WHO
and UN , and a Director of a Campaign
Agency for Religious Freedom. They will
tell their stories and share their
experiences. Read on for further details of
their CV’s and this not to be missed
weekend.
But there’s more! Later in the month. 19
November, we will mark the International
Sunday for the Suffering Church with the
visit of John McLernon from Eurasian
Ministries (see below). He will also take
part in the Big Questions evening which
will explore the crucial subject “Are all
Faiths the same?”
Why this emphasis on global issues and
mission? Well there are three reasons I
can think of. Number 1: The missions
mandate is one of the marks of a gospel
church. It’s only as we go into all the
world with the good news that we are
guaranteed the presence of Christ with us.
Read the end of Matthew’s gospel to check
me out. There is a “go” in the gospel, but
often there is a “stay” in our churches.
Number 2: Jesus has all authority in
heaven and earth and is Lord of all the
nations. Therefore there are no “no go”
areas as far as Christian mission are
concerned. Jesus is for all the world.
Each culture, century and class.
Number 3: Mission is still, in my view,
the Cinderella of the Church. Forgotten,
overlooked and sent to the kitchen, the
great commission is the great omission of
the Church. Our budgets, priorities and
programmes are weighted heavily towards
keeping the saved nice and warm, rather
than seeking and serving the lost.
This November we send Cinderella
to the Ball!
Peter Baker
Senior Minister
Sunday 19 November is a significant day in that we will be
remembering the needs of the persecuted church. We also
look forward to John McLernon being with us on that
occasion. John is the leader of an organisation that
supports the church in Central Asia. Moving from
Northern Ireland 22 years ago, John worked in the IT
industry before taking up his current role thirteen years
ago. He is married to Maggie and they have two
daughters, Ruth and Rachel.
Sunday evening will be a ‘Big Questions’ evening when
John will be speaking to the subject ‘Are all Faiths the
same?’.
A Voice for the
Voiceless
Did you know that … Baroness Cox was
created a Life Peer in 1982 and was Deputy
Speaker of the House of Lords from 1985 to
2005. She was a founder Trustee of
MERLIN [Medical Emergency Relief
International] and is Founder and
President of HART [Humanitarian Aid
Relief Trust].
She has been honoured all over the world
for her humanitarian work which takes
her to conflict and post-conflict zones,
including Sudan, South Sudan, Nigeria,
Uganda, Burma and Indonesia where she
helped to establish the International
Islamic Christian Organisation for
Reconciliation and Reconstruction
Over the weekend of Saturday 4 and
Sunday 5 November we have a rare
opportunity to hear from her first-hand
on both her humanitarian and
parliamentary work. As well as speaking at
our morning services, on Sunday evening
she will be joined by: Suzanne Averill who
has worked in global emergencies in
Sudan, South Sudan, Philippines and Syria
for the past seven years with the United
Nations, World Health Organisation
[WHO], Office for the Co-ordination of
Humanitarian Affairs [OCHA] and an NGO,
International Medical Corps [IMC].
She is now based in London, as the
Director of the Technical Unit for IMC,
supporting 32 countries globally.
Professor Anna Maslin who has
represented the government and worked
with WHO/UN on international global
health issues for 15 years. She took early
retirement to foster, but has continued to
be active in highlighting cases of global
minority persecution.
Gordon Showell-Rogers who is Global
Director of a new media initiative [‘One
We Stand’ http://onewestand.org] raising
awareness of issues of freedom of religion
or belief, and social justice. OWS hopes to
inspire new audiences to engage more
deeply with the issues, especially by
telling stories of life and hope emerging
from dark places.
All of us would surely acknowledge that
our world is in a mess. To quote Baroness
Cox “We can all see the television, turn
away, weep and feel bad … but we can put
out a hand to help …” HART’S motto:
“I cannot do everything, but I must NOT
do nothing.”
Nicky’s News
Background: Nicky Davies stood down from
her 3 years on staff at Lansdowne Church
in 2016, when she moved to a full-time
role at International Care Network as a
Women and Families support worker. The
charity, based in Bournemouth, exists to
give a loving welcome and support for
members of the refugee and migrant
community.
Doug: It has now been two years since you
began working with ICN, can you tell me
what a typical week is for you at the
charity?
Nicky: I visit women one to one visits in
their homes, teach literacy, and assist in
English classes, where needed I care for
small children whilst their mothers learn.
I’m now responsible for the after-school
homework clubs and co-ordinate our
weekly Ladies Conversation Corner, where
ladies can practice English, make friends,
and exchange skills.
Doug: What are the significant challenges
in this role?
Nicky: Knowing how to comfort people
who have had every aspect of their life
Remembrance Day 2017
War has affected families in the past and
still impacts them today. We are being
frequently reminded of the huge loss of life
in the First World War as each year marks
its ongoing centenary.
Laurence Binyon’s 1914 poem, For the
Fallen, still sums up a poignant and
powerful reminder for us
They shall grow not old, as we that are left
grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years
condemn.
stripped away, against
their will. The effects of
this can be enormous, from trauma, grief
on every level, to the inability to express
themselves through language and feelings
of isolation and loneliness.
Doug: How do you find your Christian faith
helps you in dealing with these situations?
Nicky: I would massively struggle to do my
job without it. Many situations that seem
beyond the realms of human help, have
been miraculously transformed through
prayer, and a God who is an absolute rock!
Doug: How could the church better
support you in your role?
Nicky: Continued prayers of love for those
settling amongst us from other countries,
and the opening of our homes to those in
need of community. We urgently need
homes for SCSA (Separated Children
Seeking Asylum), usually young guys,
about 17, who need the stability of loving
families.
Doug McGinn | Director of Operations
At the going down of the sun and in the
morning
We will remember them.
So, as we remember the fallen, the
wounded and those still impacted by the
effects of wars past and present, we can
give gratitude to God for the men and
women who served with courage and
sacrifice for the freedom which we enjoy
today
“Be very careful, then, how you live – not
as unwise but as wise, making the most of
every opportunity, because the days are
evil.” Ephesians in 5:15-16
David Cook | Elder

United in
Prayer
For tens of millions of Christians across
our world, persecution is a daily reality. It
is estimated that around 10% of Christians
in Syria and Iraq have been driven from
their homes in the past 5 years. Today in
Northern Nigeria there are thought to be
1.3 million displaced Christians, and
thousands have been killed. In Eritrea
hundreds of Christians have been
imprisoned, some for up to ten years.
Despite all the opposition these people
face, they follow Jesus with a great
passion. When asked what they would like
Christians in the West to do, this is their
most frequent request. Please pray WITH
us. Stand WITH us. Ask God that we might
remain faithful witnesses to the end. Does
prayer really make a difference?
This is Christine from Iraq. She was
kidnapped in 2014 by ISIS militants. She
was then aged 3. Miraculously earlier this
year she was released and is now with her
family. Thousands of Christians around
the world cried out to God in prayer and He
answered those cries. This is just one of
many stories of answers to prayer.
