COLLINSON CUSTOM BUILDING presents
KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
BACK HOME FOR A RESET
AFTER A LONG ROAD TRIP, THE FRONTENACS ARE LOOKING TO REBOUND AGAINST THE STEELHEADS
vs
While there aren’t too many game 7 situations
in the regular season–save for the last game of
the season that could determine a post-season
berth–the Frontenacs could easily view tonight’s
tilt against the OHL’s 20th place team a mustwin.
After the three-game Northern Ontario road
trip last weekend, with losses in Sault Ste. Marie,
Sudbury, and North Bay, the Frontenacs will be
looking to right their fortunes as of late against
the Mississauga Steelheads, a team that has only
managed two wins this season.
The Steelheads’ season has been an uphill climb,
especially on the road where they have yet to win
a game. The Frontenacs will be looking to do their
part in keeping that streak going.
Kingston has owned Mississauga since the
franchise was renamed from the St. Mike’s
Majors. In the past five seasons, the Frontenacs
have managed 13 wins between the two teams
while the Steelheads have managed to win 4
times. Even last season, when the Steelheads
were the team to beat in the East, winning the
OHL’s Eastern Conference, the Frontenacs
managed to sweep the regular season series,
winning all 4 games.
After their hot start to the regular season, with
5 wins and only 1 loss in their first 6 games,
the Kingston Frontenacs are looking to snap a
6-game losing streak. While they lost 2 of the 3
games last weekend by 1 goal, the 8-2 loss on
Sunday to the North Bay Battalion stung.
TRICK OR TREAT SUNDAY: We’ll be back
in action at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday when the
Saginaw Spirit make their only visit to Kingston.
Join us for a Sunday afternoon game as we add
Halloween to hockey with trick or treat stations
set up on the concourse for the kids. - KF
DEFENSE FIRST
Last weekend’s 0-3 road trip record had a lot to do with
the fact that Kingston gave up 17 goals in just 3 games.
An average of nearly 6 goals against is a recipe for disaster.
Before they worry about scoring goals, the Frontenacs
need to clean up their own end. Strong defensive
positioning, getting in the passing and shooting lanes and
taking the body are all basic hockey plays that will help
Kingston clean up their own zone, and hopefully will lead
to breakouts and offensive opportunities.
POSITIVE THOUGHTS
It has been a rough couple of weeks for the Frontenacs.
Losing six in a row is always tough to deal with, but when
five of the six losses come by a single goal it can really hit
hard. Kingston needs to put that out of their minds. It was
just a few weeks ago that they started the season with a 5-1
record, including a win over this same Steelheads team.
They need to find a way to remember the positives from
those games. They know they can string wins together
and they know they are a good team. It is just a matter of
that being what is in their head instead of the tough times
from the past few weeks.
JUST KEEP
SHOOTING
One reason the Steelheads have
had such a bad start to the season
is that their goals against average is
the worst in the Eastern Conference.
Coming into this game the team GAA
was at 4.54. The combined save
percentage of the two goaltenders
is just .864. Statistically speaking, if
you get lots of shots on goal, you are
going to score a fair number of goals
against the Steelheads. That is exactly
what Kingston needs to do. Based on
averages, if Kingston can hit the 40-
shot mark they should score 4 or 5
goals. That should be enough goals to
win a game on most nights. The more
shots they get, the better the chance
of a positive result. - KF
ROOKIES GET NATIONAL CALL
by Doug Graham, Kingston Whig-Standard
Kingston Frontenacs rookies Cody Morgan
and Evan Brand have received the call to play
for Canada at the World Under-17 Challenge
next month in British Columbia.
Morgan and Brand were among 23 players
chosen from the Ontario Hockey League to
play at the Nov. 5-11 championship. Canada
will have three squads — Team Red, Team
Black and Team White — at the eight-team
championship that will be hosted in Dawson
Creek and Fort St. John, B.C.
Morgan and Brand were informed of their
selections Tuesday by Steve Staios, head
of Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence
and also general manager of the Hamilton
Bulldogs.
“It is just an honor to be chosen for the chance
to represent my country and to do the best I
can. It will be a great experience,” Brand, who
is one of five OHL defencemen selected, said.
“I get to learn from new friends and from new
coaches as well. What do they have to say and
what can I take away from them,” the 16-yearold
Brand added.
“Pretty cool, pretty awesome,” said Morgan,
who is happy to have his teammate and fellow
billet roommate selected along with him.
Morgan, who has two goals and three points
in his first nine OHL games, said it will be
another learning experience.
“Whatever role I get, I am going to embrace it
and go with it,” Morgan said. “Whatever the
coach tells me to do, I am going to do it and
do it to the best of my ability.”
MORGAN
FWD
Frontenacs head coach Jay Varady said it is
a great opportunity for Brand and Morgan to
show their skills against their own age group.
“They come into the OHL and are the youngest
players in the group. Now they get to play
against their peers. It’s a great opportunity for
them to show their skills,” Varady said.
“They will get to play in some different roles
and then come back and hopefully build on
that as they rejoin the team.”
Brand, who has one assist and a plus/minus
of +2 in the eight games he has played for
the Frontenacs, sees playing in the World
Under-17 Challenge as the chance to put to
use what he has learned so far in the OHL.
“I’ve gotten to know the pace of the OHL, so
I’ve been getting a bit better at developing that.
This will help me going into the tournament,”
Brand said. “I’ll just use everything I’ve
learned so far and then use everything I learn
at the tournament to bring back to the OHL.”
Morgan, Kingston’s first overall selection
at the Priority Selection last April, said the
tournament will be an opportunity to expand
his hockey knowledge.
“Try to pick up some tips from the coaches
there and all that,” Morgan said. “When I come
back, it will be the same way I am playing now.
Just keep working hard.” - KF
