Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a 

woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it 

herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For

Mince Pie Brownies 

Hi, my name’s Lyndsey and I don't enjoy mince pies … there I've said it. 

I think it's the pastry, it just doesn't do it for me. So I have done my best to 

come up a mincemeat alternative. These delicious chocolate brownies taste 

like fudgy brownies, mince pies and Christmas cake all rolled into one. 

Light and fluffy on the outside and gooey in the centre, if topped with a 

vanilla ice cream you have a super tasty dessert to serve on the big day! 

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all in 

the New Year. 

Ingredients 

Method 

‣ Heat the oven to 200°C. Grease a

250g unsalted butter 

shallow 20 x 30cm baking tin and

glass bowl, over a saucepan of

4tbsp mincemeat 

‣ In a large bowl mix the eggs, 

Icing sugar and festive sprinkles to serve 

sugar and vanilla until pale and 

fluffy. Beat in the cooled chocolate 

mixture. Sift in the flour, cocoa, 

baking powder and salt and fold in 

with a large metal spoon until 

smooth. Gently fold in the 

mincemeat 

‣ Spoon the mixture into the tin and 

smooth the surface. Bake for 35- 

40 mins or until firm to the touch 

but still a bit fudgy in the centre 

‣ Leave the brownies to cool a little 

in the tin, then remove, sprinkle 

with icing sugar and cut them into 

18 squares

The Advanced Driver Course 

Most people with a driving license, on our roads today, 

have never had driver training after passing the driving 

test. The advanced driver course is designed to provide 

this to members of the public. It increases driving skills 

and knowledge. There is a one off payment (£149) 

which covers all aspects of the course including the test 

fee. This payment covers a year’s membership of IAM 

Roadsmart as well as the local voluntary group, 

Northampton Advanced Motorists, which provides the 

driver training. Sessions are done in your car with one 

of our observers. There is no limit on the number of 

sessions; it depends on progress to advanced standard. 

Before committing to the course we can provide a driving 

assessment to show you what the course is all about. 

Most that do this training are surprised by the difference 

it makes to their driving.

Mary Ann 

School children before Christmas, exited as could be, 

all saying what presents they hoped they’d get, 

sitting beneath the Christmas tree. 

‘I would like a doll’ one said 

that walks and talks and cries, 

‘I would like a pretend cooker’ 

Jenny said, to make some pretend pies. 

They all had named their choice of toy 

except little Mary Ann. 

When asked what she was hoping to get, 

she said ‘anything I can’. 

Christmas soon was over, the children back at school 

swapping tales of presents just received 

as was the general rule. 

Some of the children cycles had, much to their 

surprise, others received dolls and skates, 

where did they come from they surmised. 

‘How Santa got into our house I really do not know, 

we have no chimneys to climb down’ 

said a little girl called Jo. 

One child never joined the happy gang, 

she stood with tearful eye. 

When asked what toys that she’s been given 

not a thing was her reply. 

A hush went up around the room 

as Mary Ann she shed a tear, 

‘I have been good’ she said in sobs 

‘but Santa never came anywhere near’. 

A little girl stood close by her side 

and took her tiny hand. 

‘You can have one of my dolls’ she said 

‘I’m sure my mum will understand’ 

That doll was loved and treasured, 

she hugged it constantly.

When someone has dementia, it's important 

that they remain as fit and healthy as possible 

- both physically and mentally. The better they 

feel, the better life will be for them and those 

around them. Each person will have interests, 

preferences and routines, as well as different 

physical needs and abilities. Being able to 

follow their routines and continue to enjoy 

their interests will impact on a person's 

wellbeing as much as some physical factors, so 

it is important to remember to treat them as 

an individual. 

Try to find a form of exercise that will be 

enjoyable - ask the GP, occupational therapist 

or physiotherapist for suggestions. There are 

lots of seated exercises for people who have 

difficulty walking. For carers looking after 

someone with dementia, many other 

challenges can present themselves as we head 

towards winter. The person you are caring for 

may feel the cold far more but they may not 

realise it or may be unable to tell you. 

Being cold for any length of time is a serious 

health risk - particularly for older people and 

those who are inactive and have poor 

circulation. 

Some simple steps can help such as providing 

a hot drink, encouraging regular movement or 

wearing extra layers of clothes particularly 

cotton and wool. 

Staying healthy whilst 

living with dementia

We all need a good night's rest, but dementia 

can cause people difficulties in getting to 

sleep. People can become confused about 

night and day, and may get up in the middle of 

the night, thinking that it is morning. 

Disrupted sleep can also occur when the 

clocks change and regular routines are 

altered. 

Things that can help include limiting daytime 

naps, avoiding caffeinated drinks such as tea 

and coffee (particularly in the evening), taking 

some form of exercise during the day and 

finding soothing and relaxing ways to 

encourage the person to sleep, such as giving 

them a warm milky drink at bedtime. 

Finally, eating too little or missing out on 

essential nutrients will reduce a person's 

resistance to illness and can make someone 

with dementia feel more confused. Eating lots 

of sugary foods can cause peaks and troughs 

in energy levels, making mood swings worse. 

If a person is struggling to use cutlery to eat, 

offer finger foods that can be eaten without a 

knife and fork. 

It is very important to drink enough fluids. 

Dehydration is a health risk and can increase 

confusion in someone with dementia. Older 

people should drink about 1.6 litres or six to 

seven glasses a day.

In this edition the spotlight falls on Susan Henderson 

Owner of The Poplars in Moulton 

What’s your background? 

I was born in to Hospitality as my parents had pubs and 

hotels when I was growing up. Although I always helped 

(for free of course), they encouraged me to pursue my 

own career. I had a very successful career in London 

working for various companies for over 24 years. 

What first got you interested in becoming proprietor 

of The Poplars? 

When I had made the decision to leave the city I knew I 

wanted a B & B or small hotel. The Poplars was the first 

place that I was given details of. I arrived with my 

mother as she has a ‘shrewd eye’. I loved that it was 

such a historic building and that the village had a great 

community vibe. At the time I did not envisage moving 

to Northampton so I spent almost a year travelling and 

searching in more touristy areas like Malvern, Stratford 

Upon Avon and the Cotswolds. I then revisited The 

Poplars carried out my due diligence and here I am. And 

yes, my mother still likes to say ‘I told you so’. 

What do you enjoy most about what you do? 

Absolutely everything. I love meeting new people every 

day and looking after our regular customers. We have 

so many returning guests and that is a testament to 

what we do here. I have a superb team and am very 

proud of the work they do here. We have a very high 

rating on Trip Advisor and that is down to them. 

How would you describe yourself in four words? 

Resilient, Compassionate, Gregarious and Hard-working. 

What ambitions do you have for the future? 

The building is over 300 years old so I plan to be 

sympathetic and maintain it as best I can without over 

modernising it. The Poplars plays an important role in 

bringing people to Moulton and the surrounding areas. 

I just want to continue with what we are currently 

doing as I think we have a great formula here. 

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced? 

It was very difficult trying to refurb bathrooms and 

bedrooms in such and old building and remain open 

for ‘business as usual’. We could only do one or two 

at a time as it was so busy and the plumbing in a 

building this old is always temperamental to say the 

least. It put the team under a lot of pressure but 

with perseverance and humour we got through it. 

What’s the funniest moment you can recall? 

So many to choose from but a lovely older 

gentleman left his wife in the dining room at 

breakfast to fetch something from his room. Upon 

returning he came back in and sat at a different 

table for quite some time before he noticed his wife 

eating her breakfast alone at their table. He had the 

whole room in laughter. 

Have you ever had any famous guests staying? 

A few that would probably prefer not to be 

mentioned but also some members from S Club 7, 

Fairport Convention, Brian Jacks and comedian 

Dylan Moran.

Do you swim and would you like to raise funds for your club, the scouts, guides or your 

favourite charity? If so, do come and join our Swimarathon. Our next event is over the 

weekend of Saturday 10 th February 2018. 

This is a fun event organised by the four Rotary Clubs in Northampton and takes place 

at the splendid Chris Moody Centre at Moulton College, only recently completed at the 

cost of nearly £9 million. The Swimarathon is a charity event where teams of six swim 

in relay format for an hour. It is a fun event for all ages and all abilities. It is not a race 

or a competition. All the participating swimmers are asked to get sponsorship from 

their friends and families. 

This year’s event built on our previous successes and we were delighted to welcome 

twenty teams consisting of over 100 swimmers. In all they completed 1500 lengths of 

the 25 metre pool. This was equivalent to swimming over 21 miles or 34 kilometres, 

further than the distance from Northampton to Milton Keynes. After their swim, all 

were presented with a certificate containing their team photo and a medal. A great 

time was had by all, with considerable laughter and many smiling faces. 

We had swimmers from local schools, swimming clubs, the Brownies, the Girl Guides 

and the Scouts together with teams made up of members from families and friends. 

The swimmers were of all ages with the youngest aged five and the oldest over 70. This 

year up to 50% of the money raised by each team in sponsorship went back to the 

team, who can donate it to their choice of charity or even back to their own club or 

organisation. We were also supported by local businesses who gave generously, as a 

way of thanking the people of Northampton for their support over the years. In all we 

raised in excess of £5,000 for local charities and good causes.
