We went for it! Aaron had always been a talented woodworker, so we made
a few pieces to show people what we could do, and we have never looked
back! Now, at The Skilled Smith Workshop, with Aaron using his God given
talent, and with my assistance in sanding and staining as well as customer
service, we create all kinds of things from wood -- from wood signs,
to bedroom sets to tables and chairs. We use solid wood in everything we
make.
We love to use quarter-sawn oak, maple and walnut. We generally do not
use screws and nails in our pieces. In fact other than in hardware, we do
our best to stay away from them all together. Aaron does things the old
school way and carves quality joinery, such as dovetails and finger joints, If
there is a spot where he can do a mortise and tenon, that is exactly what he
will do. This means that our projects may take longer, but by taking the extra
time, our pieces are heirloom quality. If you are going to invest in something,
making it to last just makes sense.
If you can dream it, we would love to make it for you. We design to your
needs. Not everyone has room for a three foot long chest and not everyone
wants their chairs to be made out of maple. We listen to your preferences
and always do our best to accommodate them. We also love creating custom
designs.
One of our favorite clients, though we
never met, and likely never will, was a
wish granter for Make A Wish Foundation.
We were asked to make a custom
wand for a little boy who was being
surprised with a trip to Harry
Potter World. We were so grateful for
this opportunity to make something so
special. wWe were told he didn’t put it
down all day.
My husband always likes to say that The Skilled Smith Workshop would
never have come to be if he and I had never come together. You see, although
Aaron is the skilled woodworker, he is naturally a quiet person.
God blessed him with skills to create, and inspire. However, you would
never see him jump up on a stage and say, “Hey there! Look at this amazing
-insert object here- we made! I would love to make something special for
you too!” That’s just not him. Thankfully, in this aspect I am the polar opposite,
(also thankfully that never scared him away! )
It has been a whirlwind of a journey and
we are so blessed to do what we love. It is
phenomenal to see Aaron get up every day
with a smile on his face knowing he gets to
have “fun” and create. It makes our hearts
sing to know people see value in what
we do and that our work is part of what
makes their home feel special. To know
our work is deemed worthy of being a special
gift under the Christmas tree is humbling.
We pour our hearts into every piece
we make. We pray that every piece brings the recipient joy.
We were also blessed to be featured in Fab Working Mom Life Blog & Cute
Craft Companys Blog as well. It makes our hearts sing to know people see
value in what we do. That our work is part of what makes their home feel
like home. To know our work is deemed worthy of being a special gift under
the Christmas tree. We are so humbled. So thankful.
We praise God for what we took as his clear sign to begin this adventure
and are thankful for every step of this journey. Don’t get me wrong, it has
not always been easy. But all the stressful moments, the loose change
searching moments were totally worth it! Our hope is that in our work, in
a special piece that we create for you, you will find something to be cherished,
and something to bring you a lifetime of wonderful memories.
