10 the advertizer St Vincent’s Hospice, Starbucks Fun Day St Vincent’s Hospice mascot “Vinnie” had a fantastic day at Starbucks in Linwood on Sunday 17th September at their family fun day in aid of the hospice! Starbucks Linwood have been supporting the hospice as their “charity of the year” and to date have raised in excess of £3,000. On the day, there were games and activities for the kids along with 50 chances to win a free coffee and 2 incredible Starbucks hampers packed with goodies! The St Vincent’s Hospice staff and volunteers had a great time and generous staff and customers helped to raise a fantastic £395.78 towards local patient care. Laura McDade, fundraiser said: “We had great fun at Starbucks and cannot thank Graeme and the staff enough for all of their help to make this event a success and their ongoing support for St Vincent’s Hospice. As many as 1 in 5 of us have an undiagnosed health condition that could have been detected sooner by an optician. The eyes may be the “windows to the soul” but they also offer an insight into your general health. Blood circulates all around the body, passing through all the organs, and sometimes the blood vessels can give us clues to these undetected problems. The only place to clearly see these vessels is in the retina at the back of the eye. For example, high blood pressure (often undiagnosed due to a lack of symptoms) puts extra pressure on the heart and blood vessels, which can be seen when looking at the back of the eye. Another commonly found condition which can even be found in people in good physical condition is high cholesterol. In simple terms this is fat mixed in with your blood – sometimes seen within the retina’s blood vessels and sometimes at the front of the eye where the fat is deposited. In diabetes, the vessels can weaken which causes them to leak. Thyroid eye disease often can be suspected just by the appearance of the eyes. Tumours (both cancerous and non-cancerous) on the eyelids, inside the eye or in the brain are sometimes best detected by an eye examination and a routine visual field test. Multiple Sclerosis is often first detected by an optician due to the appearance of the optic nerve at the back of the eye. There are many other hidden conditions that can be detected, so we encourage everyone from pre-school age onwards to have regular eye examinations, even if you have perfect sight. UWS Students learn more about their Carbon Footprint In partnership with the UWS and the SAUWS Sustainability Hub, LEAP visited the student Halls of residence and led workshops in their Hub to give advice and information about their new home energy consumption. More than 40 students attended energy literacy workshops and learned more about what they could do, to not only reduce their energy consumption but to make lifestyle carbon reductions on matters such as transport, food and clothing waste, and shopping locally.
