Hello Readers…
It’s beginning to feel a bit like Christmas!
Helped by the fantastic pictures our local
young artists have produced for this year’s
competition. Congratulations to our winner,
Allegra Wilby aged 7. The exhibition of pictures
will be on display at Stony Stratford library.
In this edition, you’ll find places to eat, drink
and party. Support these local independent
venues that offer fantastic menus, tasty local
ales and beautiful surroundings.
Our other features include ideas for your
wreath. Natural, blingy traditional? Looking
to decorate your tree? Our resident interior
designer Pip certainly knows what’s in and
what’s out – she’s been scouring our local
independent home and gift shops to find
festive ideas. Turn to page 40 and 44 for
some inspiration.
Time now to get creative with the help
of our competition from Vitreus Art. Jenny
and Mike love to share their skills and the
winner will have the chance to try something
new. So put your feet up and have a go at
the wordsearch on page 20 – send in your
solution and try your luck!
Have a lovely festive
season – and remember
to keep your business
Keep your pets safe this Christmas
Presents, indulgent food and time with family and friends
are a fantastic way for us to spend the festive period but it
can be a hazardous and stressful time for your pets. Here
are three top tips to make Christmas a happy time for
them too.
Festive food
Delicious for us, but much of our festive fare can be highly
toxic and dangerous for four-footed friends. Chocolate,
mince pies, Christmas pudding, onion gravy and alcohol
are all poisonous for your pets. The bones from carcasses
can be brittle and a choking hazard for cats and dogs.
Festive decorations
Poinsettias, holly, ivy, mistletoe and lilies may be beautiful
and have a special seasonal meaning but as with food, they
can be toxic for pets.
Decorations, tinsel and wrapping paper all offer
temptation to your pets and children – but don’t let any of
them eat it!
Christmas Chaos
Just as you may need to escape the mayhem from time to
time, so will your pet! Let them have somewhere cosy and
quiet to retreat to, away from the festive
excitement. Leave them alone and
prevent loving children and guests from
disturbing them.
For more information on lost pets or the animals in their care: call the RSPCA Milton Keynes & North Bucks on
Remember, remember
Firework season is upon us and,
although it can be fun for people, our
furry friends can find it a terrifying
experience. Planning ahead is the key.
Becky Amos RVN of the Vet Centre,
Cherry Lane says, “Making a den
where pets can hide is a really good
idea to make them feel safe. Cats
should be kept inside, make sure all
windows are closed in case they make
a dash when the bangs start. Playing
music can also muffle fireworks.”
If your dog gets distressed then the
use of pheromone diffusers, which
disperse calming chemicals, may help.
In extreme cases it is worth speaking
to your vet about giving medication.
Firework desensitisation CDs can be
used to slowly desensitise your dog
but these take time to work so might
be more help for next year. Don’t
forget small furries – move the hutch
into the garage to reduce noise.
Christmas cheer!
As you look forward to the overindulgences
of Christmas and New
Year, don’t forget pets are less used to
the seasonal food extravaganza. Some
of our favourite treats are potentially
harmful to them. Dogs love chocolate
and raisins which are particularly
unsafe, occasionally leading to very
serious consequences. Our feline
friends are known to be partial to a
bit of tinsel – less sparkly when it’s
inside the intestine! If you have any
concerns over the festive period The
Vet Centre Cherry Lane vets and nurses
are available to help, with extended
opening hours (bank holiday opening)
and a 24hr emergency service for
registered clients.
Nail it for Christmas!
The options for jazzing up your nails
this Christmas are endless. Forget
boring single colours and choose
smiling Santas, red-nosed Rudolphs,
sparkly snowflakes, tartan patterns,
even magical fairy lights on your
nails!
With endless designs available,
show off your personality, creativity
and have a little fun! Don’t forget
though, creating the perfect nails
requires painstaking concentration.
On top of that add a steady hand and
good vision, as well as special tools
of the trade.
Manicure, painting, extending
the length add glitz and glamour
with jewels, pictures, glitter and
ombré effects… The possibilities are
limitless. Time to have that festive
spirit at your finger-tips!
Lahn’s Nail Salon artists in Stony Stratford have designed these fun Christmas nails. You can also visit our other
beauty salons in the town for nail ideas – Alchemy Therapy Centre, Elanele and Boutique Organica.
Alternatively ask Bee Beautiful to visit you at home.
Kicking out for Christmas
Christmas
presents don’t
always have to be
wrapped up in a
box, sometimes
a doing gift can
bring so much
more to a child.
It will last longer
too.
Daniel and
Ruby, two young
local kick-boxers,
love kickboxing
and the benefits
the sport brings. It
started as a good
way to exercise
but quickly these
siblings found their concentration and focus had improved
along with their fitness. They enjoy the competitive side of
competitions, happily accept that they might not always
win, yet are always proud of their achievements. Their
friends are equally impressed and often want to see their
moves. Ruby is also a dancer and has found kickboxing
has given her strength and flexibility.
Each time they work up to a new belt their motivation
to gets stronger and they share the goal of achieving
black belt. Finding the right instructor has been key and
while Lauren Cronin at Newton Longville and Wolverton
Kick-boxing is strict, importantly she understands the
individual needs of each child.
Consider a confidence-boosting sport like kick-boxing
as a perfect gift for the whole family this Christmas.
Your memories of English country dancing in Buckinghamshire
Chloe Middleton-Metcalfe is writing
her PhD at Roehampton University
about English social folk dance and
would like to hear from anyone with
memories of English country dancing
and barn dances in Buckinghamshire.
She is particularly keen to hear from
people who have reminiscences from
the 1940s -1970s.
Perhaps you danced at school
– did you love it or loathe it? Did
you go to a barn dance run by your
church or youth group, or a charity
barn dance? Did you ever go to your
local folk dance club? Did you teach
English country or international folk
dance? Were you involved in the
Schools Dance Festival in Aylesbury?
Chloe is keen to read your
memories, if you would like them to be
anonymised, please make this clear on
the correspondence. By sending written
memories Chloe understands that you
will be happy for her to use these in her
PhD and other research outputs.
Memories can be posted to
Stony Stratford’s Christmas Lights Switch-On Fun Day
All day Saturday 2 December
Throughout November the Christmas Lights volunteers
dangle from ladders, test light bulbs and erect trees and
lights all over the town, ensuring Stony Stratford will look as
beautiful as ever. Now Switch-On Day and all its activities
will bring a real buzz to let you know that Christmas is here:
• Market stalls
• Fairground rides
• Christmas window displays in the shops, pubs and
hotels, with a competition for the best-dressed window
• Morris dancing on the High Street
• WatlingFest – Musical entertainment of all genres in
Market Square, 11.30am – 4.30pm
As the light fades, a magical display of Christmas lanterns
displaying Santa’s Workshop at its best will make its
way through Stony Stratford. The procession of Father
Christmas, his sleigh, elves, reindeer, presents, toys and
other twists, all carefully disguised as lanterns, will make
its way from York House Centre. The display will meander
through the High Street and along Church Street to
Market Square for the grand Switch-On. When everyone
has gathered, the count-down will begin and the lights
will illuminate the sky, marking the start of Christmas
celebrations.
Be there to share the moment as the festivities begin.
Professional Business Services
The Co-Operative Legal Services estimate that 38,000
families end up in prolonged probate disputes, with up
to 10% of the value of an estate lost in fees. If you aren’t
married to your partner, have children from previous
relationships, wish to split properties, own a business, have
overseas properties or investments or are unsure about
inheritance tax, get professional advice. And remember, if
a professionally written will is later found to be defective in
any way, your family will have someone to sue.
Community
Avoid paying Inheritance Tax on the gifts you make
At this time of year we are all busy
thinking of presents and gifts to buy
our loved ones. For some, that gift
could be passing on a significant lump
sum of money, perhaps giving the
inheritance to the children early!
If you know you already have
enough for the rest of your life then
it can make good financial sense to
start making gifts during your lifetime;
otherwise your beneficiaries may pay
Inheritance Tax on your death if you
die with too much money. A word of
warning though. If your gift is more
than £3,000 there may be Inheritance
Tax to pay straight away.
There are lots of different
allowances and rules around gifting
and some investment plans can
even help you avoid Inheritance
Tax altogether. It’s best to seek
professional advice, so you don’t end
up making the taxman very happy this
Christmas.
Think before giving vouchers this Christmas
Gift cards and vouchers can be
useful when it comes to that person
who is always so hard to buy for.
But a word of caution, unfortunately
a number of retailers (think BHS,
Woolworths) have gone bust in
recent years and when this happens
it is likely the vouchers will be
worthless.
Importantly, a lot of retailers also
now have ‘use by’ dates on their cards
so if you’re waiting for the summer
season collection, you may find your
card has run out by then.
Giving cash may not seem as nice
but it’s less risky. If you do decide
to give vouchers, make sure the
shop or gift card issuer is in a good
financial position.
Use this tool to buy at the right price
If you’re a user of the website Amazon, you will probably have noticed that
the price of items can change quite significantly from time to time and you
may be thinking, “How do I know when is the best time and price to buy?”
Well there is a really useful website that will ensure you are never
overcharged again! It will show you the previous Amazon price history of
the item you want to buy and will also allow you to set price alerts. With it
you can check how cheap the item has been and once the item is for sale at
the price you would prefer to pay, you will receive an email alert. The site is
really simple, easy to use and has a strangely memorable name. It’s called
camelcamelcamel.co.uk – check it out.
Five Festive Scams
Who would not like to be given 5 gold
rings for Christmas? Sadly we can’t
help with that but we can tell you
about 5 festive scams that you might
come across at this time.
Dangerous E-Cards – e-cards
are a fun and inexpensive; however
scammers often send fake versions
that include malware such as viruses.
Protect your devices and only open
cards when you know the sender.
Holiday SMishing – This is
phishing with text messages to get
personal information like your bank
account details! These scammers
pretend to be banks or other
organisations and send texts with
urgent security warnings that your
account may be closed if you do not
respond. Your bank is unlikely to ask
for information by text so don’t reply –
call your bank instead!
Bogus Gift Cards – Social media
sites often advertise deals on gift
cards. Buy directly from the retailer so
that the recipient isn’t embarrassed
when the store won’t accept an
unofficial gift card.
Mobile App Scams – New mobile
apps are often launched for the festive
season. Only download from official app
stores, as new apps can carry malware
designed to steal personal data.
Phoney e-tailers – Fake websites
often pose as legitimate retailers.
To find out who you are dealing
with, check names and web
addresses carefully and look for small
differences. Try to stick to retailers that
you know and trust and use a credit
card to buy items over £100 – your
bank will have to assist if anything
goes wrong.
Gardening
Getting wreathy festive
There is nothing quite like a wreath to
welcome in the festive season. This
year you’ll find a style to suit every
home and taste – big, bold and blingy
as well as traditional and natural looks.
We’ve picked some of our favourites.
Vegetable inspired wreaths are fun,
festive and will certainly give your
neighbours something to talk about!
This Brussel Sprout design from Back
to the Fuchsia also features twisted
willow stems decorated with cinnamon
sticks, lotus pods and ribbon. The
pearls in the ends of the brussels
provide a touch of sophistication.
For a very natural look, Branch-out MK
use lots of items found in the garden.
Traditional wreaths are always
winners – they smell beautiful, can
be jazzed up with baubles and other
festive bits to match your decor or kept
very simple and green.
Consider linking your wreath to your
table or advent candle decoration. Pine
cones, moss, baubles, ribbons and
candles all work well.
For a slightly bolder vegetable look,
try something like this:
Order your wreaths –
Most of the featured wreath, table and advent decorations here have been
designed by local suppliers:
The mistle thrush guards holly berries in winter to prevent other birds from
eating them. Holly trees can grow up to 15m and live for 300 years. The
bark is smooth and thin with numerous small, brown ‘warts’, and the stems
are dark brown.
Community
Stony Stratford in Bloom
The beautiful floral displays around Stony
Stratford are largely thanks to the work
of the volunteers who give their time and
green fingers to Stony in Bloom. Their
efforts have once again been rewarded
with Gold in the Regional Britain in
Bloom Small Town Trophy. Their marks in
all sections exceeded previous efforts.
Also awarded this year:
Outstanding – Mary Robinson and
Robin Nichol’s North End Pond Project
Outstanding – York House
Community Gardens
Commended certificate – St Mary
and St Giles School
The judges were impressed with the
quality of the horticultural impact in
the town with the planters, baskets
and beds. They commented on the
SSIB commitment to environmental
sustainability and the growing level of
community involvement.
Tony Price and the church volunteers
were given special praise for the
appearance of the Church Gardens.
The glorious London Road hollyhocks
also received their own special mention!
The judges were delighted by the
enthusiasm of the pupils who showed
them around their school gardens.
Aside from Britain in Bloom, children’s
involvement in growing and gardening
has been incredible. Local school
children enjoyed the autumn vegetable
harvest and are already looking
forward to next year. The blooms of
the 50 sunflowers in the school garden
celebrated 50 years of Milton Keynes.
The SSIB younger members provided
a great bulb-planting activity at the
October Apple Day.
Next treat to look forward to is
the Calcutta Brasserie Fundraiser in
Milton Keynes (LAMK) has produced
performances from large-scale
documentary musical dramas to
broadcast radio ballads. The archive
collections have inspired over 100 songs
composed by local musicians about
people who have lived in the area.
To celebrate Milton Keynes’ 50th
Birthday (MK50) and thanks to funding
from MK Community Foundation,
Marion Hill and Craig McLeish and
selected 36 of these songs in a project
to share MK’s special heritage and
create the first accessible
collection of home-grown
music.
The Milton
Keynes Songbook
and website www.
mksongbook.org/ include
the background to
each song along with
a free download of the
song scores. Living
Archive Milton Keynes has made a
complimentary book available to all
schools in the borough to enable our
young people to learn and be inspired
by MK’s founders.
If you would like a copy of The
Milton Keynes Songbook, it is available
through the online shop at
www.livingarchive.org.uk for just £10.
Taxi firm urges caution during Christmas party season
Christmas and New Year partygoers
are being advised to stay safe by
only using official licensed taxis or
private hire vehicles booked through a
licensed operator this festive period.
As the pubs and clubs across the
UK get busier and many firms hold
private Christmas parties, Skyline Taxis
– which operates in Milton Keynes,
Northampton and Flitwick - is warning
people of the dangers of flagging
down bogus cabs.
Gav Sokhi, Managing Director of
Skyline Taxis, said: “At Skyline we
understand the dangers passengers
face, especially women travelling
alone at night, from bogus and
unlicensed drivers.
“We have taken steps to safeguard
passengers. We are offering a
completely free Text-Back service,
which sees us send a free SMS text
message to a customer’s mobile
phone detailing the type, colour
and registration of the car coming to
collect them. Customers feel safe in
the knowledge that they are getting
into the right, fully licensed car.
“In addition to this, our app allows
customers to book their journeys in
advance from their smartphones in
less time than it would take to make a
phone call. It can also be used to track
your taxi so you know where it is.”
