Jesus
Matters!
by Dr. Joseph Beeson,
Superintendent
We at Lake Center are
privileged to be able to
help students accomplish
the MOST important things in
life - being filled with all the fullness
of God, knowing the love of
Christ, and being strengthened with
might by His Spirit (Eph. 3:14-21).
We are aware that students may go
to secular schools and learn facts
or skills - but at Lake Center, we
know those facts and skills are really
only temporal. The bigger
picture is whether or not
eternity will be affected by what
we are teaching. My favorite
saying has become - “at Lake Center
Christian School, Jesus matters!”
It matters whether He gets
credit for the design of His
creation. It matters whether He gets
credit for being Sovereign in the
affairs of men and history. It matters
whether He gets credit for communicating
through the written Word.
It matters whether students know
that He should get the preeminence
in all things. Jesus matters.
I am blessed to be part of a school
where men and women realized
these truths over 70 years ago. Lake
Center is a school where families
entrust their students to men and
women who will teach the same
Biblical principles the children
get at home, a place where parents
are assured that the models the
children see are Christlike and forgiven
(not perfect), and a place
where the money they invest in the
lives of their children is worth it.
What a joy to see a faculty and
staff that are modeling life-long
learning. Everything from new
software programs for class instruction
(Google Faculty), to new
hardware (3D printers), to differentiation
workshops; our teachers
work hard to assure students
receive the best possible instruction
to empower them to be life-long
learners themselves.
LCCS Purchases
Home Next
Door to
School
Campus
Mrs. Mary Ellen
Yoder, who lived in
her Kaufman Avenue
home since 1970, decided
in March to sell the home
her husband, Henry (Hank) built,
and where they raised seven children.
Her home is adjacent to the
property of Lake Center Christian
School and has over four acres. A
Board member approached Mrs.
Yoder about selling her home to
Lake Center Christian School when
he heard she would be moving to
The Homestead.
Dr. Beeson is very thankful for the
legacy of 70 years at Lake Center
Christian School and that
the school is a debt-free organization.
The school had the
resources to purchase the home
and acreage with the approval of
the School Board and the Corporation
Members. The Corporation
Members voted to proceed with
purchasing the Yoder home in July.
Not every day does a property
become available for purchase that
is located right next door to the
school. The school has plans to expand
the current campus, and is in
the process of developing a site plan
to use the acreage to the best advantage
for Lake Center Christian
School.
The keys were transferred on
Tuesday, September 5, 2017. Mrs.
Yoder shared some stories about
the home and her property with Dr.
Beeson, and
other staff
members
from Lake
Center Christian
School.
She was
given some
of her own
roses to take back with
her to her new residence.
Thank you, Mrs. Yoder, for your
legacy and for being a great neighbor
to LCCS for so many years.
Your home will be remembered for
many years to come.
For He chose us in
Him before the
creation of the world to
be holy and
blameless in his sight.
The Light Fall/Winter 2017/2018
Secondary News
We have had a great start to
the 2017-2018 school year
with over 190 students in
Lake Center High School and nearly
100 attending Junior High. Student
retention is still very high and we
have welcomed a number of new students
as part of our Lake Center family.
Faculty retention is also high with
most of our terrific staff returning
this year along with some wonderful
new additions. There are lots of great
things happening at Lake Center and
I’d like to highlight a few positive
changes for the new year.
Lake Center has made a change
to our grading scale by adopting a
10 point grading scale. Our previous
7 point grading scale had been
in place since the inception of our
high school program. After reviewing
the grading practices of other
high schools throughout the state and
speaking with numerous colleges,
we found that our old grading scale
could inadvertently put our students
at a disadvantage when colleges compared
their GPA’s with students from
other schools. We also found that
many other high schools in the state
were making changes to their grading
scales to reflect a more standard scale
and put their students on equal footing
with other students in Ohio. Thenew
10 point scale that Lake Center
has adopted is more consistent, and
will benefit all students.
Another positive change for this
school year is the unveiling of our
official Commons Study Hall. Study
Hall Room 117 has been completely
transformed into a bright, comfortable,
collaborative space. In Commons
Study Hall students may study,
collaborate on assignments, talk quietly,
play games, or use their computer
within the boundaries of the Acceptable
Use Policy.
Student eligibility for Commons
Study Hall is based on the following:
• Must have approval of
Administration from
the previous quarter
• Must have a 3.0 G.P.A.
• Must have good attendance
with less than 5 absences
• Must not have excessive
tardies
• Must have no discipline
referrals
• Must have a history of completed
homework
Participation in Commons Study Hall
is optional for eligible students. Commons
Study Hall has become a goal
for most of Lake Center students who
Secondary News by Jeff Knori
are working hard to meet the requirements
in order to enjoy the benefits of
this academic privilege.
Most recently, on Tuesday,
October 17 th , the high school classes
officially crossed over from lunch
on the Gymnasium Stage to lunch in
the Cafenasium. Due to the need for
additional classrooms, the high school
moved onto what we affectionately
called the Stage-a-lunch-a-nasium
at the beginning of 2015. Though
the space served us well, we began
to split at the seams as our numbers
grew in a couple of our high school
classes. Thankfully, we received permission
for occupancy for the Cafenasium
on October 16 th , and we were
able to cross over the very next day.
Soon, we will be able to enjoy new
lunch tables in the room to meet the
plans for this multi-purpose space.
Thanks to all who have supported the
Cafenasium project. We look forward
to making further use of the Cafenasium
space as funds come in to complete
this project.
There are so many awesome things
happening at Lake Center, far too
many to enumerate here. Thank you
for your prayer and support in making
Lake Center Christian School a great
place to learn and grow in Christ.
The creative forces of LCCS are combining this Spring to provide an evening of family friendly fun and entertainment
hosted by the Fine Arts Department. Jot down this date as you will not want to miss out! Thursday, APRIL
12 at 7 PM: Band, Choir, Orchestra, Theatre, and Visual Artists will all combine to provide you with an evening of
entertainment.
Plans are underway now for this exciting event! And while there will be secrets revealed at later dates, what we
can tell you right now is that this event is not your normal concert setting, show production, or gallery display.
You will be your own guide as you choose which rooms to visit for entertainment, live artistry, games, and
more! All ages are welcome. Lake Center families are encouraged to bring outside guests to this amazing time of
fellowship and display of the wonderful work God is doing in our Fine Arts students. And if that in itself is not
enough, rest assured- there will be snacks! Look for more information soon. If you have any questions or would
like to volunteer your time and talents, please contact Mrs. Connair at jconnair@lakecenterchristian.org.
Elementary News by Dannon Stock
Character Counts
Character development is part
of what is often deemed the
“hidden curriculum” in many public
school settings. It is one of the
things that many parents expect
children to learn as part of their
education. While I embrace the
idea that we need to raise our
children and students to be “good”
people, what does that really mean?
Words like integrity, honesty, and
respect are highlighted and valued
in many classrooms across America,
and yet I wonder what the
barometer is for measuring these
behaviors. In a society that allows
people to set their own standards
and rules, how do we measure
character?
Every month, through our Celebration
chapels, Lake Center
highlights specific qualities that
we see exemplified in students.
Our heart is to develop and
honor Christian quality traits that
epitomize Christ to others. The
standard we use - God’s Word.
The Bible clearly lays out what
it means to show honor, love,
joyfulness, peace. It also
gives us an example through
Christ. “I have given you an
example to follow. Do as I have
done to you”. (John 13:15)
This verse highlights how we
are to live our lives, and reflect
Christ. I am so thankful for the
opportunity to spur our students on
to a greater understanding of what
it means to demonstrate Christlike
behavior each and every day.
5 The Light Fall/Winter 2017/2018
Tiger Time
Lake Center Christian School
started a new initiative this
year in the elementary. Three
days a week, our students in
grades 1-3 have the opportunity
to participate in Tiger Time. Tiger
Time is a thirty minute block
of no new learning that is built
into the day. Focus is placed on
reteaching, reinforcing and enrichment
of learned concepts.
This emphasis on no new learning
allows us to model and build
on concepts that have been taught
in the classroom but that may require
extra focus to process or
master. Our students have looked
forward to this time, led by our
instructional specialists, as an
engaging, hands on application
of topics previously presented.
This addition to our day allows us
to hone in on skill deficits in order
to develop understanding and
mastery. It also gives us the ability
to provide further enrichment to
those that need it. Tiger Time has
been a great addition to our learning
environments.
Parent Partnership
Parenting is hard, wouldn’t you
agree? There is not a manual
that tells you how to deal with
tantrums; no YouTube video that
shows you how to deal with childhood
anxiety. In a culture that saturates
our children with messages
contrary to what we teach, there is
no scripted response that will ensure
that our children are protected.
The Bible tells us that we are a body
that exists together in unity with
Christ. Each member performs a
specific task, but when we come together
we can function as a whole.
Parent Partnerships is a chance to
do just that. It provides a format
which allows parents to come together
and learn from each other regarding
how to ‘do’ parenting in the
best way possible.
Lake Center has partnered with
Fieldstone counseling to help
address issues that face our
parents today. The goal is to give
relevant information and assistance
with regards to development, technology,
anxiety and discipline as it
relates to children. No matter where
you are in your season of parenting,
we encourage you to be a part of
these workshops. It will be a great
opportunity for dialogue and connection.
Saturday, December 10, 2017
is a Partnering with Parents
Workshop. Contact Dannon Stock
at dstock@lccs.com for more
information.
Teachers at Lake Center
Go the Extra Mile
I
remember as a first-year teacher, someone
remarked to me that it must be easy being a teacher,
because “you still had your day” after school ended. I
remember thinking that it was a little comical - considering
how late I’d been at school the evening before.
Academics by Gretchen Shaffer
Lake Center implemented a new grading scale this
school year. The information is shown in the table below.
I also want to point out the ACT Scores. Last
year we averaged 22.2 compared to Ohio average of
19.8. The key factor in these numbers is that 90% of
our students take the ACT; in public schools, it is only
the students who are enrolled in college prep classes.
Now, one could argue that anyone who loves and is
committed to what they do, puts more into it than just
meeting the requirements of the job description. But
let me share my bias toward educators at Lake Center.
Our teachers go
the extra mile.
This year there
are teachers
implementing
phonics instruction,
improving
writing instruction
and assessment,
and finding ways to learn from each other.
Did you know that our teachers complete a philosophy
of Christian Education Course through ACSI and
keep up a certification in Christian Education as well
as state licensure?
Our faculty also participate in small groups where they
learn collaboratively, continually looking for the best
ways to have an impact on students.
Why? To teach, encourage, and challenge the
children that God has placed in their lives. Our teachers
are called to a ministry - the ministry of teaching
children to love and serve Christ, and never to stop
learning.
Let me tell you, I believe we have the best teachers--those
who love God, their students, and their
profession. They are also committed to providing an
excellent learning environment, challenging lessons,
and knowledge that is tied to Truth to all students!.
Meet the New Faculty and Staff at Lake Center Christian School
Kim Beavers, Director of Communication,
Marketing, and Public Relations
I love working at Lake Center
Christian School in the administrative
role of Director of Communication,
Marketing, and Public Relations.
I love being able to use my
business, education, and technology
degrees in my new role.
I married my high school sweetheart,
Brian, and we just celebrated
38 years of being together. We
have a mini-hobby farm with goats, chickens, and cats.
We attend the Chapel in Akron and helped start The
Chapel in Green. I was raised in a Christian home and
attended the Akron Baptist Temple until I got married. I
accepted Christ as my personal Saviour when I was in 4th
grade.
I graduated from Green High, Stark State/Kent State,
University of Phoenix, Cedarville, and am currently
working on my doctorate. I also hold multiple technology
degrees including Google Certified Instructor Level 1 and
2 and a Master MOS degree from Microsoft.
I was an educator at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy
(CVCA) teaching business and technology for the past
19 years; and I have taught at Portage Lakes Career Center.
I have also worked corporately at the American
Cancer Society, BF Goodrich, Microsoft, and The Chapel
in Akron. I am also the Ohio Future Business Leaders of
America State Director.
I am thrilled to be working at Lake Center Christian
School. God has truly blessed me with this position.
Jaynie Brown, Cafeteria Monitor
My name actually is Adeline J. Brown but I like to be
called “Jaynie.” I just celebrated my
40th wedding anniversary with my
husband, Mike. I worked for over
20 years in the medical industry as
a Phlebotomist (I worked in the lab
drawing blood samples) and spent
the last ten years of my career at Akron
General/Cleveland Clinic. I took
this job to start a new season of my life working with children.
My husband and I have three children, a daughter
and two sons. Between all of them we’re blessed with
12 grandchildren! Our daughter, Jodi, is a Nurse at Akron
General Emergency Room. Our oldest son, Mike, is
a Pastor at Faith Bible Church in Plain Township
7
The Light Fall/Winter 2017/2018
and our youngest son, Billy, is a Barber at Barbers West in
Fairlawn. Our grandchildren consist of 6 boys and 6 girls
and in this group there are 2 sets of boy twins (one set is
identical and the other fraternal). We are blessed that all our
children live locally and we can see them frequently. I am
also an animal lover. Currently we have 2 rescues, Calleigh
and Jax. Calleigh is a 5 year old Shih Tzu and Jax is a 1 year
old 90 pound blonde Lab. We enjoy taking them on hikes in
the stark parks and in our neighborhood.
We enjoy our church (Faith Bible, Plain Township) and
worshipping our Lord with family and friends. My husband
and I were somewhat late bloomers coming to Christ in our
early 40’s, but we realize it was to be in God’s time and not
ours.
My husband is an engineer in the plastics industry and has
gotten to travel to far away lands such as China and Taiwan
as well as many areas of the United States. I sometimes get
to go with him and enjoy our times together traveling. In my
spare time I enjoy spending time with the family, cookouts,
bon fires and outdoors. Oh yes! We have a motorcycle and
I enjoy taking trips on our Harley on the weekends! I am
very excited, thankful and grateful to be here at Lake Center
Christian school serving the Children and our Lord.
Psalm 37:4 “Take delight in the LORD and he
will give you the desires of your heart”
Michael Cochran, High School Bible Teacher
Here are some highlights of the Cochran
journey. I have been married
for 28 years to my elementary school
best friend. We both accepted Jesus as
our Lord and Savior in high school. In
the last 25 years, I have been an accountant,
foster parent, pastor, farmer,
coach, general contractor, counselor,
professor, missionary, orphanage director,
social worker and now a high school teacher. I have
ministered or lived in over a dozen countries. My wife and
I have sold everything and gone to the mission-field fulltime,
twice. We were married for twenty years before having
children. While on our last mission field in Brazil, we
adopted three children, Ben, Jenna and Lindsay and became
instant parents of teenagers. I graduated from Malone College
and finished grad school at Ashland University. I have
studied Arabic at the University of Damascus, and as a family
we speak Portuguese at home. I love Jesus and have a
passion for serving Him, anyway, anywhere, at any time.

teaching preschool through
high school. I hold degrees in elementary
education and education
administration from Heidelberg
University and Grand Canyon University. During my
free time, I enjoy running, biking, working outdoors,
doing crossword puzzles, and reading.
Jordan Mihalik, Junior High Social Studies Teacher
First, let me just say that it is
truly an answer to prayer and
a great responsibility to be
able to teach at Lake Center
Christian. I think very highly
of this institution and hope
that I can do my small part to
fulfill its mission.
I am originally from the area
and graduated from Lake High School in 2004. From
there, I went on to Grove City College and the University
of Akron to complete my bachelor’s and master’s
in history respectively. All my life I have been a Christian,
but my faith truly strengthened during my time at
Grove City. Without His guidance I know I would not
be where I am at today.
My love for history started at a young age after
reading a trilogy of books on Byzantium. Ever since
that point I have only become more convinced that the
best way to prepare for the future is to know the truth
about our past. Therefore, my overriding mission is to
teach young men and women an objective Christian
perspective on history in contrast to the secular view
they will encounter in the world.
I met my wife, Whitney, in graduate school and
we have been married for over five years now. We attend
and serve at Canton Nazarene, the church I was
born and raised in. We love playing all sorts of board
games in our free time, the more convoluted the better.
Another great interest for me is reading. Two of my
favorite authors are C.S Lewis and Victor Hugo.
I look forward to meeting you and preparing students
for the future God has planned for them!
Tom Paisley, Study Hall Monitor
I am the high school study hall
monitor. I have been ministering to
youth in churches and other venues
since 2008. I hold degrees in
theology and history from Moody
Bible Institute, Gordon-Conwell
Theological Seminary, and Boston
College. In addition to my work at
Lake Center, I am on staff at Urban Vision, a ministry
in North Akron. We are expecting our first child and
live in the North Hill neighborhood of Akron. In my
free time, I enjoy reading and hiking.
Laura Via, Kindergarten - 8th Grade Art Teacher
I first came to Lake Center as a tenth
grader looking for something different
than my previous school. I loved
what I found, and actually decided to
be an art teacher because of the encouragement
of my own art teacher
here (Mrs. Brott). I was planning to
study dental hygiene but Mrs. Brott
pointed out that I was always trying to avoid chemistry
and physics by staying in the art room longer. I went to
Ohio State University and graduated in 2016. While
I was there I was involved with Cru, Campus Crusade
for Christ. I led Bible studies in freshmen dorms with
one of my best friends. During the Fall of my senior
year, our leaders challenged us to think and pray about
spending a year doing full time missions with Cru. I
decided that’s what the Lord wanted, and spent last
year helping to launch a new Cru movement in Florianopolis,
Brazil. The Lord works out the timing of all
things, and there was a job available here again when
my time in Brazil was up. It’s fun to be on the other
side as a teacher, and in the elementary grades, which
I had never experienced.
My youngest brother is a junior here, and my
sister graduated two years ago. I am a “maker.” I love
sewing and other three-dimensional kinds of art best.
I love introducing students to new forms of art and
encouraging them to be creative and experiment, especially
if they don’t think they’re good at drawing
or the more traditional forms of art.
College & Career Readiness:
Mrs. Norman and Mrs. Keene have been focusing on
developing and implementing a college and career
readiness curriculum for K-12 students. The goal is
to spend 1-2 days with students in each grade level
to help them explore careers, identify their strengths
and interests, plan course selections specific to their
goals as well as investigate post secondary training
and educational options. In the secondary level, we
are using an online service called Family Connection.
This tool gives students access to their own personal
account which they will use in classes to take career
assessments, explore college requirements and offerings
and much more. Family Connection is also used
by seniors to indicate where they are applying to college
and is the method they use to request their transcripts.
This has proven to be a very effective tool
Spirit Week/Fall Social 2017 by Sharon Martin
Spirit week for the high school kicked off on
Friday, September 15, 2017, with an action-packed
night of the entire high school trying to decorate their
hallway within the seven hour window. This year’s
theme was “Seasons.” Each class chose a season at
the end of last year and had to represent it while utilizing
their class colors and incorporating a Bible
verse. Seniors had Winter, Juniors had Spring, Sophomores
had Summer, and Freshmen had Fall. During
the following week, the elementary classes toured the
hallways and voted for their favorite hall. This year,
the Sophomores won with their rendition of Summer.
There were also many other competitions for points
during Spirit Week. Each day, there was a new “dress
up” challenge. Points were awarded to the class with the
highest average of students who participated. Monday
was “Sports Mania Monday,” Tuesday was “Tropical
Tuesday,” Wednesday was “What Not to Wear Wednesday,”
and Thursday was “Throwback Thursday,” better
known as “decade day.” Friday, of course, was Spirit
Day. On Friday, students competed in over 17 events,--
from the annual Davenport Derby to Hot Potato—trying
to earn points for their class. Later that night at the Fall
Social, the final results were tallied and congratulations
were offered to the senior class for winning the Spirit
Week overall!
Fall Social 2017
On Friday, September 22, high school students
participated in the annual Fall Social. Students were
treated to a dinner prepared and served by PTF parents
that consisted of pulled pork, soups, salads, desserts,
and much, much more. After dinner, students went to
Sluggers and Putters for a night of mini-golf, bumper
cars, bumper boats, and other fun activities. Later,
students went to Kingsway Farms for a bonfire and a
hayride then back home to LCCS. A great time was had
by all, and a special thanks goes out to Mrs. Michelle
Barnoff, Mrs. Marnell Keyser, and Mrs. Terry Shaw for
all of their hard work to make this event a special
night!
Lake Center Christian School Reviewing 70 Years of God’s Faithfulness
Our Enrollment Growth History
1947-2017
When established in 1947-1948, Lake Center Christian had an enrollment of 183 students. Enrollment fluctuated between
1947 and 1991, with the highest enrollment being 227 in 1990-1991 and the lowest being 62 in 1963-1964.
Between 1947-1997, best estimates are that 287 students completed the whole cycle of grades offered while they attended.
From 1998-2002, 153 students completed 8th grade. Starting in 2003-2004, students had the opportunity to attend Lake
Center through 12th grade. High School graduates from 2007-2017 include 429 students.
In 1991-1992, Lake Center Christian School was moved to the current campus with 248 students enrolled. There has been a
continuous growth trend from that year forward through 2008-2009, when the enrollment hit a record high of 637 students.
A national economic downturn the following year significantly impacted the ability of families to pay tuition, and there was
a decline in enrollment for a few years. The regrowth of enrollment has become the focus of Advancement as Lake Center
Christian School continues to desire to serve mission appropriate families and their students.
The following numbers represent the enrollment at the end of each school year and reflect a trend of significant growth
from 2001-2017. Lake Center Christian School has offered various grade levels since its inception. It was a K-8 school
from 1984-1985. 2003-2004 is when high school grades were gradually added. The first high school graduating class was
in 2006-2007. Eleven high school classes have now graduated as of 2016-2017. Preschool was added in 2011-2012.
One of the reasons for founding Lake Center Christian School, as stated by Elmer S. Yoder in Lake Center Celebrates Forty Years, “was
the desire to provide a spiritual dimension in the educational process.” The initial churches represented in the founding of Lake Center
Christian School were the Old Order Amish, Walnut Grove Amish Church, Conservative Mennonite Church (Maple Grove), and
Hartville Mennonite Church.
With 627 students currently enrolled for the 2017-
2018 school year, there are now 136 churches
represented by the Lake Center Christian School
student body. Teaching from a Biblical Worldview
continues to be a primary focus of the education
at Lake Center Christian School. Partnering with
families and their churches as a discipleship school
is paramount to our continued mission of equipping
students for lifelong learning and service to Christ.
CAFENASIUM UPDATES by Sheryl Roberts
Praise the Lord! God has moved
hearts to give to the
ministry of Lake
Center Christian
School. When I
walked into school
one day, several
individuals committed
additional
funds and we now
have what we need
to order the cafeteria tables. We have
ordered the tables! The timeline we
have been given is 6-8 weeks for
them to arrive.
Please join me in praising the Lord
for the $33,100 that has been raised.
This covers the cost of the tables and
the one-to-one match of the endowment
for this phase of the Cafenasium
project.
What’s Next? We are firming
up quotes to finish the additional
restrooms and complete the kitchen
remodel. We will let you know the
exact totals as soon as we verify these
quotes.
We have had another company
give us a quote on the stage area, and
we are waiting for this number. We
have also applied for a grant. We are
revisiting the quotes on the gym
flooring and the equipment needed
for the gym. This includes additional
quotes on the bleachers.
Items like the shades, sound
panels, and tech needs for sound/
projection are also being finalized.
The goal is to finish the Cafenasium
and have it fully equipped by the start
of the 2018-2019 school year.
How can you help? Please continue
to pray with us for the provison
of funds to finish the Cafenasium
project. If you know someone
who may be interested in helping
with this project. please forward
this information to them or let me
Advancement & Admissions
Admission Process by Jackie Gilin
Lake Center loves our students and we are always
wanting more families to experience the joy of obtaining
a Christian Education. Enrolling a student at Lake
Center Christian School (LCCS) is an online process.
LCCS wants to make sure that each student enrolled is
mission appropriate and that the school has programing
in place to meet academic, social, and spiritual
needs. The admissions process takes into consideration
the family’s commitment to Christian education
and their church, as well as student academic readiness
for full inclusion class placement. Discerning if
the school can meet a student’s needs is important to
his/her success.
1. Online Application – All our applications are online
through the LCCS homepage - http://lccs.com/
enrollment. We encourage families to apply online
as it simplifies submission and provides parents a
tool for tracking the status of their admission online
after their application has been submitted. A
non-refundable fee of $25 must be submitted with
each application.
2. Admissions Testing - Once an application for enrollment
is submitted, it is reviewed. If it appears
the student may be a candidate for enrollment, he/
she is invited for Admissions Testing. A $200 enrollment
fee is due at the time of testing. Admissions
testing is scored and then evaluated to determine
if the student is mission appropriate.
3. Family Interview - Only after processing student
testing will a family interview be scheduled.
4. Supplemental forms must be submitted prior to the
completion of enrollment. These forms include:
• Emergency Medical Authorization
• Student Transportation Information
• Photo Consent
• Technology Acceptable
Conduct & Use Agreement
Most students applying for admission to LCCS do so
because of a recommendation from a current or alumni
LCCS family. Don’t be afraid to share your family’s
experience while attending LCCS with families who
are looking for a school where students are equipped
with a Biblical worldview that teaches them to say yes
to God, and empowers them to influence their world for
His Kingdom.
LCCS admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origins
to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally
accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not
discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin
in admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, athletics,
and other school-administered programs. LCCS reserves the right
to select students on the basis of academic performance, religious
commitment, lifestyle choices, and personal qualifications including
a willingness to cooperate with the LCCS administration and
to abide by its policies.
Technology by Heidi Roberts
The 3-D Printers are here!
Never before has God provided such a vast array
of tools to be used for the advancement of
His kingdom. As a school, LCCS has been immensely
blessed to be able to utilize resources in such a
way that we can provide our students with some of these
tools, and teach them how to use them as Christians in an
ever-changing technological landscape. We are committed
to continuing to use prayer and discernment as we
always seek to provide an environment and tools to prepare
students for lifelong learning and service to Christ.
Providing students with a rich learning environment,
that includes reliable access to the Internet and technology
tools, has been a top priority for LCCS over the last
four years. Every year, we review the equipment we have
and evaluate the best way to utilize the resources available
to make investments that will allow for the continued
commitment to this priority. Many hours of research
are done to determine what will be a good fit for LCCS.
Based on this research, we have made some significant investments
to move toward a technology-rich environment
each year for the past four years. Some of those significant
investments have included:
• piloting and then continuing 1:1 (one device for every
one student) Chromebooks in grades 7-8
• purchasing 200 laptops and beginning a bring-yourown
device program (BYOD) to extend 1:1 to grades
9-12
• increasing the number of school-owned iPads to
provide each K-3 classroom with a small set for use in
learning centers
• providing each grade 4-6 with a cart of Chromebooks
• increase Internet bandwidth and install more powerful
access points to reduce the likelihood that wireless devices
would be dropped from the network and Internet
connection
• combined what were separate wired and wireless networks
to provide one strong, robust network that provides
continuity of access to materials and better network
security
Providing students who have an interest in computer
science opportunities to learn and grow has been a priority.
Last school year we began the Advanced Placement
Computer Science Principles course in the high school,
started a high school robotics team, and piloted a Principles
of Digital Arts Production course. These courses
saw expansive growth after just one school year, a clear
indicator of their need for our high school students. Our
focus is not just on high school. We are working to improve
the integration of the engineering and design process
in our junior high and elementary computer courses
as well. We purchased two 3D printers, one for the secondary
and one for the elementary, to provide
15 The Light Fall/Winter 2017/2018
a way for students to be able to turn what they design
on the computer into an item they can touch and hold.
Here is a glimpse of some goals for the next four years:
• pilot and implement a tool that will give parents
control of internet filtering of school-issued devices
Robotics go global
by Crystal Maarschalk
The elementary robotics teams are in full swing!
We have three 8-10 member teams comprised
of 4th - 6th grade students. This year is our
first year having an all girls team, which is very rare
in the STEM field! All three teams will work together
to explore a real world problem with how humans
interact with water, develop a realistic solution to that
problem, and explain their solution to a panel of judges.
Students will also meet with industry experts in
order to solidify their solution to the problem. In addition,
all three teams will create an autonomous robot
and program the robot to perform tasks assigned by
the First Lego League. These three teams will be competing
on December 17 in Warren, Ohio. For more
information about First Lego League, please visit firstlegoleague.org.

THE QUESTION:TO SEND
OR NOT TO SEND?
Now that another school year
is underway, many parents find
themselves struggling with sick
children and when to send them
back to school. You don’t want your
children to miss school, but at the
same time, you don’t want them
returning if they are too sick or
could infect others. It is especially
hard to determine if a child should
stay home during the morning
because you can’t tell if he/she will
improve or get worse during the day.
With that in mind, I am suggesting
keeping children home if they are
experiencing:
1. fever over 100 ⁰ F
2. vomiting
3. diarrhea
4. frequent and/or
persistent cough
5. widespread rash
6. red, itchy, drainage eyes
7. persistent pain
(ears,stomach,throat)
8. lice
WHEN CAN THEY RETURN:
1. fever-24 hours after
fever free without medication
2. vomiting-24 hours after last
episode without use of medicine
3. diarrhea-24 hours after last
episode without use of medicine
4. cough-no longer persistent
w/thick or constant drainage
5. rash-24 hours after
treatment has started
6. eyes-24 hours after
treatment has started
7. pain-24 hours after
treatment has started or
pain subsided w/ stomach
8. lice-hair must be
treated and nit-free
TRUE OR FALSE?
Poison Ivy Isn’t Contagious?
TRUE-it is caused by contact with
the plant’s oil, and while blisters
you can “catch” poison ivy if you
against the plant and has oil on it.
When outside working, wear long
The Choirs are full of Joy and bursting with song by Julie Connair
The students in both the High School and Junior
High School Choir have had a beautiful start to the
year and are already preparing for Christmas. The
Choir will be singing once again this year with The Chapel
in Green for the Choirs and Carols Concert. This is a
FREE event for our community, held on Friday, December
1 at 7:00 PM, with two events at 4:00 and 7:00 PM on Saturday,
December 2. Although this event is free, there are
tickets to be picked up for entrance. These tickets can be
obtained from Mrs. Connair at school in early November.
The High School Choir experienced a fun field trip to
the Players Guild in Canton to see the musical “Beauty
and the Beast.” Students enjoyed the show and lunch afterwards,
and were able to see and hear their own Choir Director,
Mrs Connair, in the role of Mrs. Potts. The students
loved the show, and the cast of the show said the students
of LCCS were an amazing audience!
Plans are underway for select members of the groups to
sing at the John S. Knight Center, Hartville Collectibles
and Hartville Evening in the Village. The students are
Disney Trip for Band students
by Crystal Maarschalk
In the Spring of 2017, the High School Band traveled
down to Orlando, Florida for a week. During
this week, the students performed on the main stage
at Disney Springs, participated in a workshop led by
Disney musicians, spent several days exploring the
parks at Disney, and spent a day relaxing at the beach
together. This trip is such a blessing because there are
so many friendships that are formed when students
are outside of the classroom together. In addition,
this trip gives students the real-world experience of
playing in front of an audience that does not include
family members. The workshop that the students participated
in was a highlight for many. In the span of
an hour and a half, the students learned four pieces
of Disney music. This workshop solidified the Biblical
principles that are taught in band class which include:
working together as a team (1st Corinthians
12:12-27), putting our best effort forward at all times
(Colossians 3:23), and making a joyful noise (Psalm
33:3). The students have many fond memories from
this trip. The next Disney trip will happen during the
2020 - 2021 school year.
are also talking about finding groups or persons who might
need some joy this season, so we can carol to them during
December. Do you know of a need? Please let us know!
October and November also bring guests into the Choir
room, and this year will bring in some outstanding vocalists
from around our community. They will visit during the
Choir class, sing for the students, and give their testimony.
This is a great way to show the students and let them hear
firsthand how God uses music to minister straight to the
heart.
Lifelong Learning and Service to Christ
The Light is now devoting a section to alumni. Whether you attended Lake Center Christian School K-8 or K-12, we would
like to hear from you. How has the Lord directed your life since you left LCCS? How have you further prepared to serve
Him? What major life events have happened like marriage, children, career paths? We want to connect with you and help
you connect with each other. Please click on the alumni link: https://goo.gl/forms/vrRayTKfrFuAfnkv2 to tell us your story.
time on the track team I had many people
supporting me, one of which was
our track chaplain who connected me
to a local church called Spring Valley,
where I had the opportunity to work
with their youth ministry. We went on a
few very influential missions trips, one
of which we brought a group of around
15-20 students here to Canton and were
able to help with many ministries.
On the academic side, I was very prepared
compared to many of my college
peers because I had wonderful teachers
I majored in
chemistry and
was on the track
I threw the discus and hammer, and
I earned the opportunity to particiat
LCCS. I chose chemistry as my pursuit
because it is full of mystery and
wonders that can be discovered and
turned into useful tools. Grand Valley
had many opportunities for me, like
teaching labs, tutoring, and conducting
research in a lab, all of which filled
my desire to learn and share the developed
passion I have for science. I was
honored with the top senior award,
The Excellence in a Discipline Award
in Chemistry.
My goal now
is to teach
chemistry at
a university
level in hopes
to inspire others,
especially
women, to
move past any stigmas that science,
has created. In order to do that I need
to have a Ph.D. I am currently attending
the Ph.D. program at Ohio State
University in organic chemistry. I will
be attending classes for my first year,
teaching labs, and then conducting a
research project for about four years. I
am still waiting to see where my calling
is for ministry in Columbus, but
I am sure an opportunity will present
itself soon.
Service Projects
Service is defined as the act of helping or doing
work for someone. In its simplest form, it means
to put others before yourself. As Christians, service
represents an outward expression of Christ’s love
for us to a world in need.
Lake Center Christian School assists Christian families
and their churches in equipping students for lifelong
learning and service to Christ. The mission statement
of Lake Center places a high value on service.
In Philippians 2:4 Paul commands us to, “Look not
only to our own interests, but also to the interests of
others.” Part of a strong Biblical education should
therefore encompass an outward display of compassion
towards others.
Each of our elementary classes has chosen to demonstrate
Christ’s love in a unique way. From collecting
food to help local students to gathering school supplies
for children in Kenya, our students are learning
to meet the needs of those around them.
I am honored to be a part of a school that does ‘for the
least of these.’ In a world that is so focused on self, it
is a joy to see students selflessly engaged in service
through collecting canned food, raking leaves and running
for clean water. We cannot take for granted even
the smallest opportunity to stretch ourselves and bless
others. And when we can teach our children to look
for these opportunities at a young age, we set them up
for a lifetime of putting others before themselves and
being the love of Christ to everyone they meet. In a
world that is filled with so much hurt and pain, one
random act of kindness can be the brightest shining
light for the Kingdom.
Service with a Heart
by Katarina Wuchnick
Matthew 20:28
“Just as the Son of
Man did not come to
be served, but to serve,
and to give His life as
a ransom for many.”
The definition of a servant
is a person not
at his/her own disposal, but having yielded to the
wishes and bidding of others. As a servant of
Jesus, I want to take the light of the glory of God into
the lives of others and do something that furthers the
kingdom of God
here on earth. I
completed a service
project this summer
where I brought pets
to visit the residents
of Canton Christian
Home.
Something I’ve learned as I visited with the residents
is that their needs at this point in their lives are
companionship, a caring touch, and a loving word.
The instincts that God placed into certain animals
enable them to interact quite well with people. They
picked them up,
cuddled them, and
stroked them. Scientific
research shows
that stroking an
animal lowers blood
pressure. The animals
enjoyed the time
of being the focus
and the receivers of
attention, and the
residents enjoyed
the company.
Sports by Shane Byler
Fall season filled with Highlights
The 2017 LCCS fall sports season was filled with a lot of excitement and growth. Highlighted accomplishments
include: the varsity boys golf team winning the PTC Golf Tournament, the varsity girls golf team
advancing to the OHSAA district tournament, and individuals,
Maddy Justice and Caleb Bower, earning Player of the Year honors in
the PTC. In addition to these major accomplishments, we saw tremendous
growth from all of our programs on the whole, and can’t thank
our coaches enough for the time they’ve invested into the student-athletes
they coach. The cross country program conducted a clean-up
service project at the Hartville Marketplace,
along with the volleyball
program organizing the “Volley for
Florida” event which raised funds for hurricane relief efforts in Florida. We also
say thank you to the twenty-two senior athletes who concluded their playing
careers with us at LCCS. In addition to the tangible and intangible signs of
growth in our programs, LCCS is taking
on a much bigger role as a host of events
this year. Our first big event was the PTC
Middle School Volleyball Tournament, a
twelve match, four-day event that included
fourteen different teams from the
PTC County Division. In addition to the PTC Middle School Volleyball
Tournament, LCCS will also play host to the PTC County vs. Metro Boys
Basketball Preview, Hoops with a Heart Boys Basketball Classic, Lady
Tiger Girls Basketball Showcase, and the Annual Baseball and Softball
Tiger Tailgate Tournament. On the whole, our scope is broadening, and
our 2017-2018 school year of sports got off to a tremendous start this fall. We look forward to seeing our programs
continue to take steps forward through the effort and support of our athletes, coaches, parents, fan-base and
other important stakeholders.
Winter Sports 2017-2018
The LCCS winter sports seasons are right around the corner. We welcome two new varsity coaches to
LCCS with Ryan McGonagle serving in his first year as the varsity boys basketball head coach and Tim
Keene taking over the helm as the varsity girls basketball head coach. Coach McGonagle is a graduate of
Kent State University, currently works as a physical education
teacher in the Plain Local School District, and most recently
led the junior varsity boys
basketball team at Glenoak
High School. On the girls’
side, Coach Keene previously
served as a Junior High
Bible teacher and has been a
staple in the girls’ basketball
program as an assistant coach
the past couple years. Coach
Keene is now excited to assume an even bigger role and build on the foundation
that’s been established in the program. Mindy Ickes will enter into her third year leading the high school cheerleading
program and is excited to continue to build on the enthusiasm established around our winter sports teams.
High school cheer tryouts officially begin on Monday, October 23 rd. High school girls’ basketball officially begins
on Friday, October 27 th, and high school boys begin official practice on Friday, November 3 rd .
Tuition Assistance by Mary Lou Conley
The Tuition Assistance Program of Lake Center
Christian School exists to allow Christian families
who are not able to afford the cost of tuition the opportunity
to benefit from an education at Lake Center
Christian School. It was established in May 2001,
awarding a total of $8,000 for the 2001-2002 school
year. It has grown to a total of $82,000 awarded for
the 2017-2018 school year. Most
of the money awarded comes from
donations.
We are selling ornaments to help
raise funds for the Tutition Assistance
Program. They cost
$10.00 each and all proceeds benefit
this program. To purchase an
ornament, please stop by the school (they are available
in the Central Lobby or in the Advancement
Office). We will also be selling them at the Christmas
Concerts.
