Honoring our
veterans on Nov. 11
Mokena veterans
slated to serve in
celebration activities
Submitted by Founders
Crossing Chapter of the
Daughters of the American
Revolution
On Nov. 11, the Village of
Mokena, William F. Martin
VFW Post 725 of Mokena
and the Founders Crossing
Chapter NSDAR will join
in observance of the national
holiday, honoring veterans,
the history of Mokena, and
the Revolutionary War service
of one of its founding
fathers, Charles Denny.
The event will take place
at Pioneer Cemetery, located
alongside Wolf Road at Denny
Avenue. An area north of
the cemetery will be available
for guest parking. Events at
the cemetery begin at 11 a.m.
and include the rededication
of a restored World War II M5
artillery piece and the cemetery
flagpole by the VFW and
the Village, along with rededication
of the grave and memorial
of Denny by the Founders
Crossing Chapter Daughters
of the American Revolution.
The artillery piece will be
marched to the cemetery at 10
a.m. from 191st Street south
on Wolf Road for its installation
at the cemetery events.
According to the Veterans
Administration, Veterans Day
has been observed since President
Dwight D. Eisenhower
signed a law in 1954 proclaiming
this day of national
observance a “celebration to
honor America’s veterans for
their patriotism, love of country,
and willingness to serve
and sacrifice for the common
good.” The choice of the date
— Nov. 11 — was originally
to commemorate the Armistice
signed on Nov. 11, 1918,
officially ending World War
I and giving the name Armistice
Day to the observance.
Later, 1938 legislation stated
that Armistice Day, a legal
holiday, was to be a day dedicated
to the cause of world
peace.
Service to country and
community will be the highlights
of the Mokena Veterans
Day event, which is open
to both Mokena residents and
guests. Questions regarding
the day’s activities may be
directed to VFW Commander
James Hogan at (708) 479-
