The team features student-athletes from Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln- Way West, Providence Catholic, Andrew, Tinley Park, Lockport Township and Sandburg high schools. Compiled by 22nd Century Media staff Forwards Silvio Gkizas, senior, Providence 35 goals, 28 assists. All- Sectional, All-CCL. Gkizas had the ability to create something out of nothing, proving to be a gamechanging player who put up video game numbers. MidFielders Kyle Seymour, senior, LW West 17 goals, 6 assists. All-SWSC. The Warriors’ captain was the most explosive offensive threat for his team and seemed to be involved in every play. deFenders First team Vasili Vouris, senior, Sandburg 3 goals, 3 assists. All- Sectional, All-SWSC. Vouris helped shut down offensive lines this season, combining with keeper Connor Baker to allow only 13 goals. second team Forward Dan Repa, junior, Andrew 10 goals, 2 assists. All-Sectional Honorable Mention. Jordan Abbasi, senior, LW East 8 goals, 7 assists. All- Sectional, All-SWSC. David Flores, junior, LW West 5 goals, 9 assists. Goalie Scott Slocum, senior, Providence 30 goals, 9 assists. All- Sectional, All-CCL. Slocum showed the ability to find the back of the net regularly, working to be a great leader for his team over the course of the season. Brett Hudak, junior, Tinley 16 goals, 3 assists. All- Sectional, All-SSC. Hudak repeated and improved upon everything great about his sophomore season, scoring two more goals than last season and adding three assists. Connor Baker, junior, Sandburg 9 shutouts, .72 goals against average. Baker was fast at reading the field and helped give Sandburg a chance all season long. Jimmy Margas, senior, Sandburg 12 goals, 4 assists. All- Sectional, All-SWSC. Fast and versatile, Margas played with a lot of heart, proving to be a driving force in the Eagles’ offensive attack. Luke James, senior, LW West 4 goals, 16 assists. All- SWSC. One of the Warriors’ most consistent defenders, James dished out great passes all season, sparking the West offense. Nick Kowalczyk, junior, Lockport 15 goals, All-SWSC. There is a reason Kowalczyk was named Player of the Year for the SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue Division. Frank Dicosola, senior, LW East 8 goals, 8 assists. All-Sectional, All-SWSC. Dicosola proved to be East’s fantastic counterpart to forward Jordan Abbasi this season. Justin Biela, junior, Lockport All-SWSC. The defender was an anchor for the Porters’ defense this season and possessed the ability to create scoring chances. mokenamessenger.com SPORTS the Mokena Messenger | November 9, 2017 | 43 Boys Cross Country ‘It’s a whole different world’ Knights struggle at state, hungry for next year Tim Cronin, Freelance Reporter Lincoln-Way Central’s boys team went into the 3A cross country championship with high hopes coming off a fifth-place finish in the sectional at Granite City. A motivational text by Dave Walters, Lincoln-Way’s 1973 state champion and a world-class age-group runner to this day, added to the anticipation. The hopes were dashed on a wet, muddy day at Detweiller Park. The Knights placed 24th in a 25-team field, beating only Lockport Township. “They ran well, pretty much finished like they did last week as far as our order goes,” Knights coach John Taylor said. “It’s something special for them to be here, to perform under pressure.” Sophomore Jared Kreis’ time of 15:32 paced the Knights. Partly because of the conditions, it was about 14 seconds off his eighthplace time in Granite City. But sectional and the state title race are completely different animals. “It’s a whole different world,” Taylor said. Danny Kilrea of Lyons Township won Saturday’s individual race, running the three-mile test in 14:08. Kreis was 84 seconds behind in 111th place, indicating how far he has to go in the next two years to join the state’s elite. “It wasn’t my best race,” Kreis said. “I came in looking for a PR on the final day of the season. Junior Jackson Burriss (199th, 16:23) and senior Kern Rodrigues (201st, 16:25) were right behind. “We’ve got to fill in the middle next year,” Taylor said. “It’s exciting to see the next couple of years here. I’m looking forward to coming back here next year.” For Kreis, the experience was everything. “At least we got here, and got to experience this as a team,” Kreis said. “It’s exciting, a totally different experience. The atmosphere is crazy. I was pretty nervous, honestly. “It turned into more of an individual race than a team race. It’s hard to find your guys. Ten seconds can be 25 spots.” Girls Cross Country Allen steps up with Brownrigg under the weather at state Knights place 20th, many runners returning next year Tim Cronin, Freelance Reporter Merrigan Allen is a freshman at Lincoln-Way Central and is diminutive enough to get lost in the hallways between classes. Put her on a cross-country course and she stands out. Allen led the way for the Knights in Saturday’s IHSA 3A championship race, finishing the three-mile test in a career-best 17:58, eight seconds ahead of ailing Mackenzie Brownrigg, and setting the Knights up for a 20th-place finish in the 25- team field. It also sets them up for a better showing next year, when Allen will be a sophomore, Brownrigg will be a senior, and three others who ran at Detweiller Park – junior Rachel Baumgartner, sophomore Lexy Sams and freshman Colleen Erdman – will return. “I started out really far behind, because I’m really bad at starting,” Allen said. “Later, I found all my teammates.” And passed them. The swirl of the state championship was, of course, new to Allen. “There’s just so many people to push you, every part of the race. Everyone’s cheering for you,” she said. “It’s a really different experience.” Allen’s timing, 16 seconds better than the time she posted at the sectional in Granite City the previous weekend, placed her 72nd in the 210-runner field. The Lincoln-Way Central’s Mackenzie Brownrigg ran 86th in the 3A cross-country championship Saturday, Nov. 4, in Peoria, fighting a cold all the way. Tim Cronin/22nd Century Media runners were so packed at that juncture that if she was six seconds faster, she would have been 54th. Brownrigg was one of several elite area runners to have the misfortune of being under the weather for the weekend. She still gutted out an 18:06 clocking – just over six minutes a mile – good for 86th. “For her to push through that is impressive,” Knights coach Jack Young said. The outcome sets up Brownrigg and Allen as co-leaders for next year’s squad. “It’s weird, because I never even thought I was going to make the varsity this year,” Allen said. “Merrigan came through and picked off what I was lacking, so I’m really proud of her,” Brownrigg said. “I definitely expected to break 18 (minutes). I could feel a little off, but didn’t want to think about it too much. I came at it with a positive mind. “The start felt good, but I felt a little heavy. And as the race progressed, the heaviness progressed.” Central scored 497 points, one less than Oswego East. Naperville North, with three of the first 10 team finishers, won the title with 87 points, upsetting Yorkville (117). Lyons Township (184) took third. Baumgartner was 108th overall in 18:16, with seniors Gretchen Zirgaitis 166th in 18:46 and Dana Boucher 191st in 19:15. “I’m proud of their efforts,” Young said. “We were shooting for Top 20 overall.” They hit that on the number. While the times of Sams (193rd, 19:16) and Erdman (199th, 19:23) didn’t count, they finished close behind Boucher and will be counted on in the future. “Next year our goal is going to be Top 15 or Top 10,” Young said. “We’re only losing three of our Top 12.”
