Kremer III, Editor Things are about to get wild at St. John’s Community Center Nov. 16-19: Mokenabased All About Music and Children’s Theatre is scheduled to launch its production of the Disney hit, “Madagascar.” The 65-person cast, split into two groups so everyone has a chance to participate in the production, will dance, sing, tell a few jokes and entertain audiences in a fur-filled theatrical production of the animated movie. “[The show] is almost all animals,” said All About Music Co-owner and Creative Director Connie Johnson- Beebe. “It’s different types of animals: There’s animals that know what people are, and animals — what they call ‘in the wild’ in the show ‘Madagascar’ — that don’t know what people are, what lions are, because they’ve been on an island their whole lives. Costuming-wise, I think this is the first show where there’s only been five people characters; the rest are all animal characters.” Johnson-Beebe said they chose “Madagascar” for the upbeat and contemporary music, and because the production features lots of parts for all ages and genders for kids. The cast includes children who range from kindergarten to seniors in high school. All the parents volunteer their time to help in whatever capacity they’re capable.” Todd Beebe, co-owner and filling in as lighting and sound technician for this production, said the costumes might make things a little more difficult than usual for the children to get around the stage in, but that hasn’t hampered the energy level of the actors. “It’s been off the chart,” Beebe said. “You can feel that every week you come in the energy is getting bigger and bigger for the anticipation for it. You can definitely tell they’re getting ready for [the production].” Ava Briscoe, 12, of Mokena, is set to play Maurice the lemur. Kremer III/22nd Century Media things remain the same show after show. “It’s different because I don’t think we’ve had a show where we’ve had mostly animals before, and it’s pretty funny,” Briscoe said. “But, it’s the same because everyone always does a good job with their part and is supportive.” Annie O’Brien, 15, of Tinley Park, is slated to play Melman the giraffe, and said audience members of all ages can appreciate the show. “There’s humor for all ages,” O’Brien said. “There are little jokes for the younger audience members to get and little references for the adults to get. There’s a nice ‘Silence of the Lambs’ reference in there.” LW Foundation’s Dinner Gala benefits students’ success Jason Maholy Freelance Reporter The Lincoln-Way Education Foundation has raised more than $4.2 million geared towards improving the academic opportunities in Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 since its inception in 1994. The Gala was held Oct. 28 at the new-look Odyssey Country Club in Tinley Park. The Gala typically raises between roughly $30,000 and $50,000. The event featured dinner, dancing, silent and live auctions, and music provided by band students from the Lincoln-Way East jazz ensemble. The Foundation was created as the fundraising arm for District 210, and exists for the sole purpose of generating funds that go toward helping students achieve academic success, Foundation Executive Director Bob Kennedy explained as guests filed into the renovated banquet hall. The Foundation has provided funds for electronic message boards and WiFi at all three high schools, and software that enables students to compose music on their MacBooks, among numerous other things in its 23 years of existence, Kennedy said. “We’re not buying football uniforms, we’re not buying cheerleading outfits,” he added. “Our moneys are being used to help kids achieve academic success, and bring kids up the highest academic level at all three schools.” The spirit the Gala this year provided a means to showcase the talents of student band members. A jazz ensemble composed of youths from all three schools entertained guests before dinner, and a string ensemble provided the mood music during the meal. “We believe music and academics, the arts, is all tied together,” Kennedy said. “It helps these kids get a real advantage and be well-rounded, and we thought it was really appropriate to have these kids come and entertain and provide some background music. It’s really all about the students.” Foundation External Vice President Jamie Viebach said planning and organizing the Gala is a major undertaking, but one in which the entire Lincoln-Way community comes together to make possible. Nearly 100 businesses contributed prizes for the raffle drawings and auctions. “It’s one of those things that take a village – or five communities, in any case,” Viebach said, referring to Mokena, Frankfort, New Lenox, Manhattan and Tinley Park – which comprise District 210. “We have so many wonderful businesses and individuals in these communities who donate to us and make sure we have incredible silent and live auctions, and people work their tails off to ask businesses for contributions and to collect the items.
