Human relationships can
be political in the sense that
politics, involves powerstructured
relationships or
arrangements whereby one
coherent group of persons,
of which the common
denominator might be sex,
class, race, caste and so on,
exercises power over another
group through personal
contact and interaction.
I introduce the concept of “politics”
primarily when speaking of the sexes
because sex, is a status category with
political implications. Arguably, one
could classify interrelationship between
the sexes (male and female) as “politics”
because it involves not only exercise of
power, but also presume a superior norm
against which inferior groups are tested
and found lacking.
A closer look at patriarchy throws more
light on the possible relationship between
dependency and maleness. Patriarchy,
which is the male head of a family or
tribe, can be extended to mean any kind
of group organization in which males
hold dominant power and determine the
power limitations of the females through
the assignment and definition of such
power. Interestingly, in both patriarchy
and the interrelationship between the
sexes, certain basic things are clear:
they are institutionalized; involve the
exercise of power or dominance; and are
asymmetric.
To maintain this power or dominance,
dominant groups presume a superior
norm against which inferior groups are
tested and found lacking. The subsequent
findings, then serve as an excuse for
treating the latter as inferiors and keeping
them perpetually dependent. At the same
time, the presumed norm also serves to
explain the realities of the world or the
order of things: why things are the way
they are; what is ‘normal,’ ‘abnormal,’
‘right,’ ‘wrong,’ ‘natural’ or ‘unnatural.’
How true is this in our lives? Often
in our everyday relationship, men’s
presumed superior norms and their
own formative background provide the
judgemental standards against which
women are measured and found lacking.
The pernicious effect of the patriarchal
power is that it exacerbates the division
of human society. One group (male)
is indirectly appointed to rule over the
other (female) by mere virtue of sex.
Publisher’s
note
Patriarchy, then, being based on
discrimination, encourages oppression in
human relations and corrupts many other
areas of thought and social experience.
The patriarchal male through “interior
colonization,” can assume an attitude of
subjectivity and view himself as a symbol
of power. On the other hand, the female,
having inherited an inferior position
through the psychology of gender, tries to
please the male, through subordination
and dependence. By making sure that
the female depends on him, the male can
successfully ‘colonize,’ enslave and despise
her, even reduce her to a “Zombie.” He
may do so without remorse or fear of
losing her love.
In complex and institutionalized social
relations such as ours, social dominance
of groups, is not merely enacted
individually by its group members, but
will be legitimized by laws, sanctioned by
the courts and enforced by the police or
magistrates. It illustrates why dominant
ideologies such as sexism, patriarchy or
colonialism do not easily collapse.
It is through the control of these
“Ideological State Apparatuses”-
institutions such as the family, the
court, religion, education, the media
- that dominant groups or ruling
classes manage to legitimize their
own presumably superior norms and
indeed their power and dominance.
The subordinate groups, on the other
hand, are doomed to remain perpetually
‘colonized,’ or, “interpellated,” to accept
the social positions which are necessary
for their participation in the social
formation. If a group is held to be
inferior, it can expect to be treated so; and
it will act according to that treatment.
Thus, the vicious circle is perpetuated
and the status quo maintained.
Unless we change our attitude or the
dominant suppressive system, which has
perpetually kept women supressed all
these years, we can make little progress
– socially, economically, politically or
otherwise in our societies. A progressive
society can best be measured based on
the position of the “minorities” in such
a society.
It is the dream of Kata Kata to make
the Kata Kata village an epitome of
tolerance and gender equality, knowing it
is the best way to live harmoniously and
progressively with one another. If you are
part of this noble dream, join our Kata
Kata wagon before it is too late.
Health
very person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do
not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a
few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no
more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests
are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the
detectable size.
Therefore, breast self-exams can be an important way to find breast
cancer at an early stage. According to Johns Hopkins Medical Centre
“forty percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who
feel a lump; so establishing a regular breast self-exam is very important.”
It is therefore, very important to learn how to perform a breast self-exam
to check for lumps or any other changes that may signal breast cancer, by
taking the following precautions:
Stand in front of the mirror
SELF- EXAM
Breast cancer is
the development of
cancerous tumors
that develop from
breast cells. The
signs may include a
lump in the breast,
change in breast
shape, fluid coming
out of nipples and
skin dimpling.
Look and observe your breasts keenly with your shoulders
straight and the arms held on to the hips
Check for breasts usual size, shape and skin color and if you
notice anything different or a symptom, please bring it to
medical personnel’s attention.
After, raise your arms head level high and look out for similar
changes like in step one, try to move your hands around the
breast and feel if there are changes in how it feels.
Lie down and roll on either side to examine the opposite side
breast.
During the touch check, make sure your breast lies as flat as
possible
Using your finger soft pads move in small circles from the end
towards the nipple and changing the amount of pressure exerted
every round of circle taken for three times.
However, in doing breast self-exam, you should take the following tips
into consideration;
Do the self-exam at the end of your monthly period
If you are pregnant, on menopause, or if you have irregular
period, choose a specific day each month to do the self-exam.
This exam shouldn’t be performed in the shower or with lotion
on your skin/fingers
If you find a lump or notice other unusual changes, remember not to
panic because about 80% of the lumps found aren’t cancerous. Therefore,
you need not to worry but see a doctor or seek medical advice promptly
for further evaluation.
Definitely, a little bit of carefulness could save lives and debunk the
myths behind murderous cancer. It is worth the effort!
have decided out of their
indecisive indecision to make
Anyway, Chief, there is a serious
problem
Problem?
Yes, this letter is from the
United Nations. As part of the
celebration of the Women’s
Day, the United Nation has
called on Kata Kata Village to
lead the world in showing
solidarity for the plight of
women.
I don understand. Dey wan us
Or when dey don
United Nations
wants us to treat
Dey tell UN dat we slap our wives
every morning; or our wives
Which kind family control is dis
one?
Wow, Who told you
women are happy? For the
fact that they say nothing
not treated like a slave
You see any chain on their neck?
We live here in peace and happiness,
Listen!
Worldwide, women are the biggest
culturally and politically, yet they are
segregated and made an appendix to men
Which appendix? De one
understand..
12 Kata kata cartoon magazine

Agama, I beg you, break dat
grammar with hammer so dat we
understand.
I tell you million en half time
dat some of us en book are
Chief, sorry. I always forgot that some
of us are suffering from grammatical
cerebral deficiency en…..
Okitumba! Thunder!! Heeee!
To read book good!
See how grammar sound like
thunder inside de mouth
So like I was saying, the UN asks Kata Kata village to not only
celebrate Women’s day, every 8th March, we must also say no
to gender apartheid and embrace gender equality
So, me en my wives will put leg in one
bedroom? So now, who is head of
Chief!! Don't say I did not warn you.
If UN discovers you hinder progress
here, they will dethrone and castrate
you in the village square en banish
you to Taliban or Al Shabaab village.
Hee!
Don go there!
Interestingly, if women are treated equally, the
female labour force participation rate will
increase as well. This will have a positive impact
on the economy.
castrate him
Me, I support anything
that is good for Kata
Kata village
Now you are talking!
This is time to move from
talk into concrete action.
!
Gender equality is not only a
responsibility of men; women
have roles to play. How do we
achieve our goals?
I suggest we put everything in
writing and send to UN. Or I
talk lie?
We put it inside paper, me I sign,
so that dey know we serious
en support what dey wan.
So where Piccolo?
Oya, help put everything
in writing.
!
20 minutes later
You finish?
Aha! Oya read dat one
for everyone
We must promote gender-balanced leadership – both at home and in
the Kata Kata village
We will make 8TH MARCH a free day to celebrate the WOMEN’S DAY
On the Women’s Day, we must encourage our children to bring gifts to
their mothers to show them how important mothers are to the
children
We must treat ALL women in Kata Kata village with dignity and
respect
Women must be allowed to take certain responsibilities in the house –
not only to have kids
Women must be allowed to be part of the decision making in the
family
Women must be exposed to leadership positions
Both individual and Kata Kata village as a whole
must learn about their own gender biases, adjust
their behaviour towards women so as to eliminate
discrimination against women in Kata Kata Village
No more dowry for women because women are
NOT a property
At work, we must pay women the same salary as
men for the same or similar work
Kata Kata culture must be advanced in such a way
that ALL individuals feel valued and included,
hence encourage them to contribute fully based on
their capabilities.
By Mirembe Rosemary
atified on August
18, 1920, the 19th
Amendment to
the United States
Constitution
granted American women the
right to vote—a right known
as woman suffrage. At the time
the U.S. was founded, its female
citizens did not share all of the
same rights as men, including
the right to vote. After the right
to vote was guaranteed by the
19th amendment, the equal rights
amendment (ERA) was proposed
as the next step in confirming
“equal justice under law for all
citizens.” The ERA was introduced
in to every congress between
1923-72 when it was passed and
sent to the states for ratification.
States have a responsibility
to uphold standards of due
diligence and take steps to fulfill
their responsibility to protect
individuals (women) from human
rights abuses. Despite great
strides made by the international
women’s rights movement over
many years, women and girls
around the world are still married
off as children or trafficked into
forced labor and sex slavery. They
are refused access to education and
political participation; and some
are trapped in conflicts where rape
is perpetrated as a weapon of war.
Around the world, deaths related
to pregnancies and childbirths are
needlessly high, and women are
prevented from making deeply
personal choices in their private
lives. Human Rights Watch is
working toward the realization
of women’s empowerment and
gender equality—protecting the
rights and improving the lives of
women and girls on the ground.
Women are entitled to equal enjoyment
and protection of all human rights and
fundamental freedoms that include amongst
others:
• The right to life
• The right to equality
• The right to liberty and security of
person
“Violence
against women
means any act
of violence that
results in or is
likely to result in
physical, sexual
or psychological
harm or suffering
to women.
Under the UN Declaration on the
Elimination of Violence against
Women, 1993, violence against women
is a social (economy, health, welfare,
politics) problem – definitely not a
private problem of each individual
woman or a family. Violence against
women means any act of violence
that results in or is likely to result in
physical, sexual or psychological harm
or suffering to women. It also includes
threats with such acts, coercion
or arbitrary deprivation of liberty,
whether occurring in public or in
private life.
Therefore, with this factual detail of
women’s rights, it is an obligation for
every state and individual citizen to
observe the rights and refrain from
violating them. However, it still is a
working progress for most countries
to wholesomely observe these
entitlements. Taking an action – no
matter how little – is better than being
inaction. Please let everyone come on
board.
Fashion
To accessorize
is to provide
or compliment
(a garment)
with a fashion
accompaniment.
POWER
OF
ACCESSORIZING
By Mirembe Rosemary
As simple as it might
sound, accessorizing your
outfit isn’t just a case
of throwing on a pair of
earrings and calling it a
day. The right jewelry will
accentuate your clothing,
draw attention to your
style and flatter your face.
To accessorize is to provide or
compliment (a garment) with
a fashion accompaniment.
Accessorizing is not as easy as it
might look. “Does this bag match
these shoes?” “Do the earrings
work with this necklace?” And so
on and so forth.
It is a struggle to bear, especially by
women in endeavors to look good.
However, in this article I intend to
make accessorizing as easy for you
as probably could:
As simple as it might sound,
accessorizing your outfit isn’t just
a case of throwing on a pair of
earrings and calling it a day. The
right jewelry will accentuate your
clothing, draw attention to your
style and flatter your face. You just
need to pick the perfect piece.
A simple t-shirt can be
transformed with a statement
necklace, while a classic black
dress becomes even more chic
with a delicate gold bracelet. I’m
not sure the advice to ‘take one
piece off ’ before leaving the house
works… I say the more accessories,
the better.
First to consider is color.
Accessories should complement
your clothing, not overpower
it, and the matchy-matchy days
are long gone. If you’re mixing
patterns or wearing something
with intricate detailing, your
accessories should be more
neutral. Today, no one wants
to step out with the 80s look at
all, where your royal blue dress
perfectly matched with royal blue
bags and shoes. Try to simply look
for the little accent color within
your dress which isn’t dominant,
then choose or accessorize in this
little accent color; and these will
highlight a speck of color from the
outfit, bringing the contrasting and
pleasant way.
The function, mood and
look you are hoping to
make/ put off.
Different occasions call for
different jewels. While a bit of
bling can work during the day,
it’s best to save your shiniest stuff
for the evening. Remember you
can wear the same dress to church
and again to a dinner date but to
accessorize it differently to fit the
alternate occasion, it is always
important to wear one accessory
that makes a bold statement put
together with 2-3 other subtle
accessories.
Practicality:
This is trying as much to stay
within your fashion self. Do your
accessories suit your lifestyle? Do
they appeal to you and do you feel
comfortable with the outfit and
how you have matched it up? It is a
fashion blunder to wear beautiful,
expensive stilettos that you can
barely work with, but rather a
wedge you can comfortably move
with. You can also use accessories
to emphasis your best bits –
slender wrists suit chunky bangles,
long fingers look great in big rings,
and a draped necklace will really
flatter a killer cleavage.
Just like any fashion and
magnificence advice, a common
option of finding out what will
work would be to try it out. See
what it looks like and how it
exactly feels on you, keep trying
the different several accessory
combinations having an outfit and
select that one you believe looks
best for you.
Beauty
By Mirembe Rosemary
air growth can be frustrating for many women whose hair
doesn’t come pretty easy. Many women would do all they
can to make their hair grow firm and long; but how can one
achieve this? Are the products you use the magic to achieve this? Is it
the way you apply the products that makes the growth stout? For sure,
you may have been given many pieces of advice over your hair, but
here are few home remedies that will enable you to grow longer hair
with less hustle.
Water helps your hair a lot. Moisturize your hair and drink
the recommended 8 glasses of water daily to help keep your hair
moisturized. Also apply the perfect moisturizer for either natural or
treated hair, like coconut oil, olive oil and pure Shea butter. Use this
more often.
Deep condition your hair. This treatment moisturizes and restores
balance to your hair and you should do this every three weeks, for 30
minute interval. Dry the hair after.
Many women
would do all
they can to
make their hair
grow firm and
long; but how
can one achieve
this?
Trim off and dust your hair ends monthly. It is important in order
to achieve a certain balance. I know most ladies don’t like or believe
in this, but it is the vital results that matter. Interestingly, the results
have been corroborated scientifically.
Untangle your hair. This helps to reduce hair breakage as well as
enabling you to comb through with ease. You should use a wide tooth
comb, preferably in the shower.
Go for the protective hairstyles. There are many styles which are
not only considered as protective, they are pretty fast and cheap to
make and maintain. Some of the hairstyles include big braids, buns,
human hair weaves and wigs.
Avoid blow drying and hot combing hair. The excessive heat can
be very damaging to your hair. It’s better and safer to use less heat of a
dryer or air dry. It saves hair and it is equally less stressful.
Avoid highly chemical hair products. You work against your hair
when you use products with very high chemicals. Opt, instead,
for simple and natural products like oils and Shea butter that help
nourish and balance your hair, helping it to grow healthy.
Definitely, observing these few easy remedy is a right step towards
taking better care of your hair. You surely will be surprised to see the
results very soon. Yes, the result is the amazing growth and quality of
your hair.
LET THE
KITCHEN
DO THE TALKING!
A little touch in the kitchen
could radically transform
it to not only a more
environmentally friendly
part of your house; it
will make the kitchen an
appealing place for the
cook or whoever steps
into it.
Kitchens serve as not only a
place to prepare meals, but
also a main gathering space in
the home other than the living
room. This is irrespective of size
that even tiny kitchens can have
captivating style with fabulous
decorating ideas you need to
spice up your smaller spaces.
If you’re looking to improve
your kitchen, seek inspiration;
often best kitchen ideas come
from beautiful pictures of other
people’s homes. Irrespective of
your budget, consider ideas and
advice to make your kitchen
practical and multi-functional,
without compromising on style.
Your kitchen should reflect
your interior design style and
the choices are endless - from
classic, country, chic and sleek
contemporary, retro, rustic,
Shaker-style and everything in
between.
Improved storage, lighting and
palette will play a vital role in
making a small kitchen feel
larger. If you have more space
to play with, consider additional
features such as butcher’s
blocks, pharmacy cabinet,
glazed wall units, larder units
or kitchen dressers. Think carefully
about the design choices
you make in your kitchen, from
worktop materials to cabinet
handles, all the details add up
to your dream kitchen look.
Go for a dark color while painting
your kitchen cabinets; it is
an ideal way to create a cozy feel
in a space that is often lacking in
comfort. It’s a great option for a
quick and cost-effective kitchen
update. A dramatic color will
make a bold statement, so make
sure you pick your shade wisely.
Definitely, it’s not that white
ever went out of fashion; it’s just
that it’s particularly in fashion
right now. Sleek white countertops
look good enough to eat off
and sit above glossy cupboards
and back tiles.
Remember keeping your kitchen
clean and free from bacteria
involves making sure that you
don’t transfer the germs from
one surface or item to another.
This can sometimes happen
no matter how vigilant you are.
For example, when you have to
turn the water on using a handle
while holding a food item or
having just handled something
like a raw chicken; so endeavor
to buy a selection of cleaning
products and utilize them.
Enjoy great kitchen ambience
and cost effective makeover as
you make more great family and
friend memories within the perimeters
of this space. Now relax
and enjoy your food, prepared
in your new kitchen.
Tech. Technology
By Mirembe Rosemary
TECHNOLOGICAL EFFECT
ON HUMAN WAYS OF LIFE
Over the years, technology has been responsible for creating wonderful resources, which easily
put all the information we need right at our disposal. The advance in technology now has led to
some great discoveries and has at the same time drastically changed how our daily lives operate
forever. But technological development has equally some negative impacts in our lives.
Technology is systematically killing
creative writing talents in us. Writing a
letter is no longer a creative challenge
for the young generation. With our
smart phones, sending out abbreviated
messages has become a norm. How
many of us dare post greeting cards to
loved ones during Christmas, birthday
and other occasions? E-card, SMS, text
or email have taken over this creative
social activity.
Technology has taken away the traditional
way or routine of sharing information.
Very few people still walk
into a newspaper stand to access information.
The social media networks
now allow us to access and share pretty
much anything, anywhere, anytime.
What of our television experience? In
as much as many kids are addicted to
the TV due to the technological advancement,
recently, one is no more
held to their black and white TV with
blurred images set. We can now watch
any show we want, when we need and
how we exactly want to.
Surprisingly, technology has impacted
the way we date as well. Those days a
boy would bribe a youngster with a
sweet to go and call the sister are almost
gone. With the online dating
trend, you can meet, discuss and plan
dating outings with your pals exclusively
online. You now understand
why many individuals rather use the
internet to see if they can still hook
from the pool of singles out there.
Channels of communication have
changed. Gone are the days of walking
to the telephone booth to make a call
or strolling to the neighbor for a chat.
The mobile networks and phones have
replaced all that, making communication
more convenient and easier.
Book publishers are equally affected
by technological advancement. So is
our way of reading books. You hardly
need to carry books if you don’t want
to; smartphones,tablets, e-readers
have enabled us to carry our reading
materials on with ease as well as access
them conveniently.
..many individuals
rather use the internet
to see if they can still
hook from the pool of
singles out there.
Interestingly, parenting has become
easier due to technology. With different
parental platforms available on the
internet, parents help one another with
the grooming and upbringing of kids.
They can easily share information and
find solutions in times of need.
No doubts, technology is definitely,
changing our lives for the better, making
things becoming easier and more
convenient. At the same time, the latest
technological trends have some social
impediments in our social lives; we are
basically a slave to the new technology.
MOTHER, I OWE YOU
CAPTAIN AMERICA:
CIVIL WAR
(2016)
PG 13 2h 27min
Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Ooh how I love that you’re my mother
Turn around, and I feel like a child over again
Mother, my most precious blessing in life
So gentle, composed, yet so strong
So tough, yet with overwhelming care
You always make me feel I belong
How did you find the energy, mummy
To do all the things you did
To be patient with my foolishness
To be a teacher, nurse, and counselor
When I was nothing, but you saw every potential
How did you really manage, mom
To be a friend, cook, wife
Yet find time to play and learn with me
I truly cannot fathom
Remarkably outshining both
‘avengers‘ films in its deployment
of superhero showdown and
credible, amped-up character
conflict, “captain America” is finally
the cinematic superhero movie
you’ve dreamt of since childhood,
precisely because that’s
everything – and all – it wants
to be. Following their efforts on
“Captain America: the Winter
Soldier,” the Russo brothers’ film
has an unshakeable faith in these
decades-old characters: they’re
not wrangled into standing for
anything other than who they are,
with no reinterpretation or reach
for epic significance required.
If you’ve been following the story
so far but still doubt, you could
get misty-eyed over Captain
America (Chris Evans) and Iron
Man (Robert Downey Jr) knocking
in a stripped-down plot, pitting
former allies against one another.
With other heroes rallying around
those two poles, the characters
face the consequences of their
super-powered actions and
ultimately examine how their own
personal histories influence their
heroics.
They somehow manage time to
introduce both Black Panther
(Chadwick Boseman) and a new
version of Spider-Man (Tom
Holland) without overstuffing the
plot. The filmmakers maintain a
striking and consistent focus on
their own particular exploration
of the “with great power comes
great responsibility”. The compelling
blockbuster entertainment
built out of a moral and emotional
conflict, and that’s more impressive
than any overblown display
of loud and vulgar power concept
crafting one of the few satisfying
end-game battles in Marvel’s
cinematic.
With so many characters in
the mix, the plot sounds more
complex than it really is. But
simplicity is the film’s strong
asset; with the major scenario
sketched in the characters are
free to bounce around within its
relatively confined parameters.
Captain America: civil war is one
you should definitely watch, for it
keeps you glued to the seat and
eye-focused on the screen.
I see now it is the power of love, mummy
It makes you come whenever I call
Your inexhaustible love, mom
It made me happy, confident, and mature
And I am forever grateful
Kids
CREATIVE
CLUB
Sweet but harmful
Candy, which comes in many
different types, sizes and colors, can
be irresistible – especially amongst
kids. For most children, candy
is a paradise. But it also has its
disadvantages.
There are many different types of
candy, but one of the most popular
ones is lick candy. Just like the name
sounds, it is the candy you can lick.
Some popular kinds of lick candy
are: lollipops, peppermint and candy
canes. There are also chewable
candy sweets like chewing gum and
gummy bears.
Candy is not exactly good for the
teeth. It can, for example, cause
caries. Dental caries is tooth decay,
which sometimes causes holes in the
teeth. Of course, what is dangerous
about candy is that it sometimes
takes a long time before one notices
the damages on the teeth. Although
candy is not very expensive to buy,
fixing those damages can be very
expensive.
However, problems associated with
candy can be prevented. Going to
the dentist regularly and eating less
sweets can be very helpful. It helps
also to brush your teeth after a
meal. Try to eat a few pieces of fruit
and vegetables per day. Fruits and
vegetables are not only good for your
teeth; they are also delicious. Yes,
candy can be very unhealthy because
it contains a lot of sugar; but other
foods like chips are very unhealthy
as well. Both candy and chips also
make you fat. Being fat is equally not
good for one’s heart. So we must be
careful what we eat.
I hope you now know more about
candy and that you are now more
careful with sugar. Although candy
can be cheap and very delicious,
you might end up spending much
more when you visit your dentist
or doctor. Remember: your health
comes first.
Some of the Most Amazing Spots in Africa
In Africa, the rule of law and other democratic gains
have ushered in a more assertive and positive image
of the continent. Freedom, human rights gains and
economic prosperity are systematically, becoming
some of the gains of the new democratic order. The
perception of Africa amongst the West has positively
changed of recent. Apart from the economic muscle of
the continent, the raw beauty of Africa is hard to deny.
Better still, Africans have started to tell their own stories,
rather than allow the West to define and castigate the
continent and its people from the West stereotypical
point of view.
With the new economic power of Africa, many Africans
have started to appreciate the beauty of the continent,
they have equally realized the importance of enjoying
the amazing charm of Africa. Tourists in Africa are no
more limited to the West, Africans are now amongst the
new holiday makers. A swarm of families heading to
the captivating African beaches on weekends is a clear
sign of economic resurrection of Africa. Unlike oil and
other natural resources, which have a time limit and
can disappear after some years of usage, tourism entities
like amazing beaches, panoramic landscapes are there
to stay. It is only a wise government that would invest
heavily in tourism, the undeniable source of national
income. Africans should be the best marketers of their
own natural resources. This can only happen if and
when Africans join the African tourism Mecca – the
African earthly paradise.
With this in mind, Kata Kata Travel team recommends
the following amazing and captivating spots. Take a
break from your work, have a great vacation. With a
copy of your Kata Kata magazine in your hand, relax
and enjoy your holiday!!
Lake Malawi, Malawi
Perhaps, Malawi is not one of the heavyweight names
in Africa, but the country has the undeniable natural
beauty you hardly find in many countries. From the
famous Lake Malawi with its beautiful views, to the
Nyika park are just some of the many attractions of
Malawi. Lake Malawi is not only one of the largest
lakes in the world, it has more tropical fish, -1,300
species - than any lake in the world. With its fresh
water diving potentials and the unique bio-diversity,
Lake Malawi has been chosen by the UNESCO as the
worlds’s first freshwater park World Heritage Site.
Nyiragongo Volcano, Virunga
National Park, Eastern Congo
Although the eruption has displaced more than a
million people, Nyiragongo Volcano, one of Africa’s
most active volcanoes, is a must see while in Eastern
Congo. With amazing two kilometers wide and
Zanzibar, Tanzania
In terms of tourism in East Africa,
Tanzania’s Zanzibar is top notch because
of its fascinating history and the incredible
beaches. Its location in the Indian ocean
(off the coast of Tanzania) made it a huge
trading centre over time. Zanzibar is
famous for its spices and having become
an important slave trade post under the
Arab rule. The influences of the Arab rule
are obvious on the island, especially in the
famous stone town - one of the island’s
biggest attractions.
Letters
Aunt Silvia
Dear ,
Thanks for your valuable advice. I
am a fanatic fan of yours. Recently
my daughter had a bad experience
at school. She was nearly raped
by a group of boys. To worsen the
situation, I was told by my daughter
that her headmaster blamed her for the
unacceptable behavior of the rascals.
That was not all. The only punishment
these boys could get from the school
authorities was a warning never to
“harass” girls. My daughter came back
heartbroken. She was not only terrified
by the action of the boys who wanted
to rape her, she has equally felt guilty
for giving the rapists «opportunity» to
try to harass her.
As a father, who knows how responsible
my daughter is, I feel bad for her.
Equally, she is being pestered by
children, both in school and at home for
being a “loose” girl. Her recent school
result has been very poor – the worse
ever. Please I need your help!! What
shall I do to stimulate my daughter?
Yours,
Njoroge (Southern Rift Valley, Kenya)
Dear Njoroge,
Thank you for your courage. I am not sure whether you are in a marriage
or not because you never talked about your wife / female partner. It
would have been interesting to know what your female partner thinks
about the treatment of your daughter. Regardless, it is very unfortunate
that your daughter was made a victimizer for a crime she never
committed. For the sake of clarity and record purposes, no one has any
right to have sex with a woman without her consent. Not even a husband
has such a right over his wife. Nor does any manner of dressing be used
as an excuse to rape a girl! So, such watery and unfortunate excuses
like «you provoked them to rape you» or «you enticed them because of
the way you dressed» do unfortunately encourage, systematically, the
irresponsible rapist tendencies. It equally goes a long way in defining
women as a sex object. This attitude must be
unequivocally condemned.
I think you and the rest of your family I think you and the
must first and foremost, quickly show rest of your family must
your daughter that you are solidly first and foremost, quickly show
behind her as well as let her know your daughter that you are
how much you love her. She should solidly behind her as well as let
be encouraged to know it was not her know how much you love
her fault that they wanted to rape her. her. She should be encouraged
Rather, it was totally a wrong action
to know it was not her
fault that they wanted to
taken by irresponsible boys. Praise her
rape her.
for refusing the advances of the rascal
rapists and withstanding their aggression. She
needs to be tremendously encouraged.
Likewise, she should be proud of her heroic acts and pay more attention
to her studies as she used to do. Her positive action would encourage
other innocent girls to withstand the criminal acts of the rapists and speak
out against such sexist behaviours.
Concerning the attitude of the headmaster, who not only condemned your
innocent daughter, but gave the criminal minded rapists just a warning,
what more shall one say? In line with our uncompromising stand against
any form of discrimination – especially against women, Kata Kata magazine
would like to offer you a free legal representative, if that would help
punish both the rapist and the headmaster who ingloriously had failed to
live up to his task and responsibilities. Please get in touch with us if you
would like to make use of our offer.
We wish your daughter happy days in school. She is strong breed, who
cannot be intimidated by a bunch of irresponsible sexists.
