Aunt Silvia
Dear Aunt Silvia,
I need your help. My wife and I are having serious misunderstandings over the
circumcision of our son. I want our son to be circumcised in view of the recent medical
proofs that circumcision helps to reduce AIDS infection and other venereal diseases.
Moreover, there are other health benefits associated with the circumcision. On the other
hand, my wife is against such a practice, arguing that circumcision is not done in her
culture. Please advise me because I want the best for our son. Likewise, I want a happy
family.
Yours,
Owusu ( Obuasi, Ghana)
Dear Owusu,
Thank you, Owusu. It is nice to hear that you
want a happy family. Generally, marriage is
not always a bed of roses. There are conflicts,
misunderstandings, and opinion differences. The
most important weapons to overcome these
challenges are communication, tolerance, and
compromises. Looking at the stands of both
of you (your wife and you), there are clearly
good reasons to stick to one’s stand; but
there is always a room for compromises in a
marriage. Arguably, with mountainous research
works, pointing towards the advantages of male
circumcision, I would definitely ignore my cultural
sensibilities and go for the circumcision. Apart
from the fact that male circumcision takes less
than 30 minutes, it has numerous benefits,
which, to me, outweigh the cultural benefits.
Amongst the benefits are:
Circumcision helps reduce risks of
contacting both HIV and STI by you and
your partner.
Male circumcision does not affect male
libido or sexual desire
When the foreskin is removed after
circumcision, it helps to reduce the
possibility that the penis gets in touch
with the wet, warm and infectious
environment, which is ideal for the
substance of viruses like herpes, syphilis,
Cancroids as well as HIV.
Intercourse with an uncircumcised penis
can create an environment for the growth
and spread of viruses amongst partners,
especially, when some moisture gets
trapped between the penis and the
foreskin.
A circumcised penis helps to reduce your
female partner’s risk of cervical cancer
Keeping an uncircumcised penis 100 percent
fresh can be difficult.
Naturally, a
clean and
fresh
has it that many women prefer circumcised
With the above-mentioned points in mind,
I would suggest you friendly approach your
wife and talk to her with respect, and let her
understand why you think your son needs to
be circumcised. I am pretty sure your wife will
accept your opinion if she really wants the best
for your son - and the family.
Good luck.
