a support worker is to contribute the valuable information you have around what worked and what didn’t work. This means that you need to have been observant throughout the whole process. You need to have noted when the person you supported was happy and doing well or when they weren’t. You need to have opinions on why things worked or didn’t work, and you need to be able to back up those opinions with information or observations. You also need to be a critical reflective thinker. Critical reflective thinking is when you deliberately take a dim view of things! Even if you think things went well, you still need to answer this one question: What could have I done to make it better? STAND ALONE QUESTIONS The following ‘stand alone’ questions can be completed in any order. But you need to do them all before you start on the ‘project’ questions that follow. Your Role PREPARATION Let’s consider your role in this process. Look back at The Triangle Support Relationship section earlier in this book. Think about your role in the Triangle Support Relationship and also think about your Job Description and your Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s). From the Support Worker Job Description: • To support the individual to identify personal goals, interests and needs and contribute these in the planning process. • To develop and maintain positive relationships with others including Family and Whanau who have a key role in the individual’s life. Example: Executive Director – Responsibilities: As Executive Director, John Taylor’s responsibilities in all personal planning is to make sure that the support teams have the resources they need to do planning.
