The Lancers will have four seniors
graduate, but Schaaf believes the program
will continue to play at a high level. “We’ll
be just as good next year, if not better,” he
said.
Individually, Lafayette’s Erin Davis
came back to win the Class 2 consolation
championship in singles competition. She
defeated Tristen Caskey, of Lee’s Summit
West, 6-3, 6-3 to finish fifth.
Davis, a sophomore, opened play at
state 6-1, 6-0 win over Republic’s Kaitlyn
Snyder.
“It was a good match to get under her belt
to calm the nerves,” Schaaf said. However,
Davis fell in her next match [2-6, 6-3, 6-3]
to Cailyn Sporing, of Blue Springs.
“She played great in the second match
and she had a chance to win but lost a
couple close points that gave the other girl
momentum. Her next two matches were
relatively easy. She cruised to the wins in
straight sets in both matches,” Schaaf said.
He noted that it was impressive to see
her play well after losing. “She bounced
back great from that lose because she
could have let that ruin the rest of the
tourney.”
Davis ended with a 22-7 record this season.
“She was our little beast,” Schaaf said.

Marquette’s Ellie Lewis won her fourth
state medal, finishing eighth in Class 2 singles
at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.
“Ellie is the most accomplished player
we have had in the girls’ program,” Marquette
Mustangs coach Matt Del Pizzo said.
Lewis ends her tenure as a Mustang with
an overall record of 127-53. That makes
her win percentage 70 percent.
“She did this playing at No. 1 singles and
doubles against some of the best talent St.
Louis has had in a long time,” Del Pizzo
said.
In her career at Marquette, Lewis qualified
for state all four years. She finished in
the top 16 in doubles in her freshman year.
As a sophomore, she earned a third-place
finish in doubles. She repeated that last
year in doubles. This year, she qualified for
state in singles.
“It has been great to have Ellie on the
team the last four years,” Del Pizzo said.
“We did know about her as an incoming
freshman and were excited to have her
come here. We had a really solid team and
knew that she was going to be a nice addition.
Little did we know how nice.”
Parkway South’s Maggie Moore and
Emily Xu had the top local finish in Class 2
doubles with a fourth-place effort.
St. Joseph’s Academy had a pair of
doubles medalists in Lexi Woodman and
Morgan Kane, who finished fifth; and Abby
Thurmer and Shannon Sims, who finished
seventh.
