Police lied over attack on Wike’s convoy
—Rivers govt
By Jimitota
Onoyume
RIVERS
State
government has
described as misleading
and unfortunate, a report
released by the state
Commissioner of Police, Mr
Zaki Ahmed, saying that
neither Governor Nyesom
Wike’s life nor that of the
Minister of Transportation.
Mr Chibuike Amaechi, was
threatened, last Saturday at
the scene of the incident
involving convoys of the
duo.
Commissioner for
Information and
Communications, Mr
Emma Okah, in a
statement, yesterday, said
it was clear the report was
allegedly written for the
Police to save their image,
stressing that the Police
report had shown alleged
plans to assassinate the
governor.
He said: “The Rivers State
Government has rejected
and dismissed the Nigeria
Police report on the convoy
attack on the governor of
Rivers State. The biased
report is a sad development
for the police force that has
chosen to disgrace itself.
The Police did not
investigate the matter but
acted a script written for it.
‘’From the totality of the
statement of the Police in
Rivers State, it is very
obvious that plans and
strategies have reached
advanced stages to
eliminate the governor of
Rivers State Mr. Nyesom
Wike, and the incident of
last Saturday is a
manifestation of the plans
of the Police.
‘’It is wicked and wrong
for the Police to treat a state
governor like a subordinate
of a minister, more so when
the Police has been
Anniversary: Gov Emmanuel to commission
Obotme-Arochukwu Road
By Emmanuel
Ayungbe
AKWA Ibom State
governor, Mr.
Udom Emmanuel, will in
May next year
commission a 14.7
kilometre road linking
Ini Local Government
Area of the state and
Arochkwu in Abia State,
among other projects to
mark his third year in
office.
The Commissioner for
Works, Mr. Ephraim
Inyang-Eyen, made the
disclosure, yesterday,
receiving tremendous
logistics and financial
support from the Rivers
State Government. Not to
recognize the priority of the
governor’s convoy over
any other convoy in the state
except those allowed by
law, is a national
embarrassment. Could this
be the reason the Nigeria
Police was recently voted as
the worst in the whole
world?
“It is deliberate falsehood
for the Police to say that at
the time the outrider got to
Nkpogu Junction and
intercepted the Minister’s
SUV Black Lexus 750 Jeep,
the convoy of the governor
was 400 meters away. It is
even more satanic for the
same police to say that they
did not know how the
outrider fell from his bike.
‘’The governor’s convoy
was a short one on that day
while inspecting
ongoing road projects in
the state.
Mr. Inyang-Eyen who
expressed satisfaction at
the level of work done so
far by the contracting
firms, said: “The 14.7
kilometer Odoro Ikpe –
Ikpe, Ikot Nkon, Obotme
–Arochukwu road project
will be among many
other road projects
expected to be
commissioned by
Governor Udom
Emmanuel in May next
year to mark his third
year in office.”
and the outrider who is the
first part of the convoy was
certainly not up to 60 meters
away from the governor. If
the Police was in doubt as
to who knocked down the
outrider, why did they not
ask the rider?
“It further mangles logic
that the Police is confused
as to who has the No. 1
convoy right in the state. Is
the office of minister above
that of the governor of a
state in Nigeria? It is wrong
for the Police to accord
priority to the convoy of a
Minister over and above
that of the state governor,
confirming accusations that
the Police has low regard
for the government and
people of Rivers State
“When a police high
command indulges in
deliberate falsehood and
closes its eyes to the truth,
the people cannot trust it
The project which is
being executed by
Peculiar Ultimate
through Alternative
Project Funding
Approach, APFA, mode
of funding has achieved
50 per cent completion.
Inyang Eyen said the
state governor is eager to
open up rural
communities in the state
so that residents would
have direct link with
neighbouring Abia State
to encourage interstate
business transactions.
“This project was
and the result is an express
invitation to anarchy as the
police is doing in Rivers
State.
“Even if it was an
accident, there should be a
cause and an effect. There
should be a party who is at
fault. Even a traffic warden
who raises his hand
controls a traffic and he is
obeyed by all. Why is the
Police avoiding a
preliminary finding of guilt
against the Minister of
Transport?
‘’The Claim by the police
that it will discipline officers
found blameworthy in the
ugly incident is the usual
pattern and trick to shield
SARS officers in the
minister’s convoy and
dismiss police officers in the
convoy of the governor and
frighten those who may
want to defend the
governor in case of future
attack. "
Ibom and Abia states
which is 14.1km but I will
appeal to the governor to
extend the road beyond
the border by 600 meters.
“This is to enable the
project accommodate a
dilapidated bridge which
is linking the state with
Abia State to ease
interstate business
transactions. There is no
wisdom terminating the
Arewa leader bemoans level of
abandoned projects in N-Delta
By Davies
PORT
HAR-
COURT—THE
leader of Arewa Initiative
for Peaceful Co-existence in
Southern Nigeria, Alhaji
Musa Saidu, has
expressed displeasure over
the level of abandoned
Niger Delta Development
Commission’s, NDDC,
projects in the oil-rich
region.
Saidu, who spoke in Port
Harcourt, yesterday,
regretted that the main
essence for the
establishment of NDDC
has been defeated, alleging
that money meant for
projects allocated to the
commission are being
mismanaged by some
political big wigs.
Saidu said: “I am very
at UNIBEN's 43rd convocation
worried because the main
reason for the
establishment of NDDC
which is for the
development of the Niger
Delta has been defeated.
Instead of seeing good
projects, the area has been
littered with abandoned and
uncompleted projects.
“This is bad because it is
only causing agitations in
the region. The commission
has been politicized. There
is need for the president to
probe all the projects that
have been awarded in that
institution.’’
The leader urged
President Buhari not to
extend the tenure of the
Managing Director of
Niger Delta Development
Commission, NDDC,
noting that any attempt to
extend the tenure would
spark crisis in the region.
FG urged to abolish capital
punishment, detention of
lunatics
By Jimitota
Onoyume
THE
Federal
Government has
been urged to abolish
capital punishment and
detention of lunatics in
the country.
Making the appeal,
yesterday, in Port
Harcourt, Rivers State,
Executive Director,
Citizens United for the
Rehabilitation of Errants,
CURE, Nigeria, Mr
Sylvester Uhaa and Pastor
Ray Chuks Afujue said
research had shown that
the capital punishment
does not deter others from
crime.
The group said the right
to life should be seen as
sacrosanct, stressing that
A
total of 9,993
graduands of the
2015/2016 academic
session will be honoured
with different academic
awards at the 43rd
Convocation/ 47th
Founder’s Day ceremony
of the University of Benin,
UNIBEN, the Vice
Chancellor, Prof. Faraday
Orumwense, has said.
Giving a breakdown of the
graduands, while briefing
journalists about the
convocation ceremony
which kicks off on
November 22, 2017, Prof.
Orumwense disclosed that
a total of 100 graduands
taking another person's
life was “barbaric, brutish
and the highest act of
violence.”
Continuing, the group
said about three percent
of the total population of
74,508 prison inmates in
the country are on death
row.
“The number of death
row inmates stands at
2,264 representing 3
percent of the prison
population of 74,508. We
condemn calls from some
quarters for the execution
of these people. Also, we
want to emphasise that
the right to life is
sacrosanct and neither
the state nor an individual
has the right to take it,”
the group said.
