Kingdom sacrilegious —Oba Ewuare II

Government and
the Benin Traditional
Council, BTC, have
described as abominable
and sacrilegious, the
purported coronation of
Pere of Olodiama
Kingdom, an Ijaw
community in Ovia
North-East Local
Government Area of Edo
State, asserting that the
entire Edo South
senatorial district is an
enclave of the Oba of
Benin, Oba Ewuare II,
and no other person.
Consequently, Governor
Godwin Obaseki has
ordered the arrest and
investigation of all those
involved in the purported
coronation, declaring that
it was another attempt to
cause crisis in the state,
which according to him,
will be resisted.
It would be recalled that
one Godwin Oguyenbo
was being congratulated
as the Pere of Olodiama
Kingdom.
Reacting swiftly, the
BTC, led by the Iyase of
Benin, Chief Sam Igbe,
the Esoagban of Benin,
Chief David Edebiri, who
addressed journalists,

Tigers of Africa, a
militant group in the
Niger Delta region,
yesterday, threatened to
attack oil and gas facilities
belonging to Shell
Petroleum Development
Company, SPDC, in
Ekeremor Local
Government Area of
Bayelsa State, for
allegedly neglecting the
local content law in the
state.
The group, in a
statement by its
spokesperson, Mr.
Ogoun Tensighan, also
issued two weeks
ultimatum to the company
to involve the Amabuluo
Federated Communities
in its operational activities
in the area, failure of
which it would carry out
its threat.
Describing the attacks
by the Niger Delta
Avengers as "child's play"
compared to its planned
Oba of Benin.
“We only have one
monarch in Edo South
senatorial district, that is
the Oba of Benin. The
title Pere of Olodiama
Kingdom does not exist.
Gelegele is under the
overlordship of the Oba of
Benin and there cannot
be two monarchs in
Benin. We are advising
the Pere of Gbaramatu,
Delta State, to avoid
falling foul of the relevant
laws of Edo State.
“The Ijaw people in
Gelegele are free to live
in the area just as other
ethnic groups that live in
attack, Tensighan said:
"The silence of the group
should not be taken for
granted as we are
determined to make the
region uninhabitable for
the oil company to
operate.
"We have watched with
patience the impudence
of some individuals from
Egbemagalabri
that axis. Any attempt to
lay claim to non-existent
title and community or
village under any guise
would be totally resisted.
We call on law
enforcement agencies to
fully investigate and
arrest those that are
behind this abominable
and sacrilegious act.”
Also, the state
government, in a
statement by the
Secretary to the
Government, Osarodion
Ogie, said: “The claim of
such a non-existent title in
a non-existent community
under any guise is a clear
community to undermine
the people of Amabulou
Federated Communities.
"Job slots and benefits
for the people of
Amabulou are being
diverted by these
individuals while the
original owners of the
land where the oil is being
explored are suffering.
"It is based on this that
and pre-meditated
breach of our laws, particularly
the Traditional
Rulers and Chiefs Law of
Edo State which sets out
the lists of all recognized
traditional rulers and
chiefs of Edo state.
“The said law further
makes it a criminal offence
for any person to
recognize or purport to
install any person as a
traditional ruler except as
provided for under the
law and in fact makes it
an offence for any
unqualified person to
present or permit himself
to be so addressed.’’

Ogoni clean-up: HYPREP begins selection of firms

Remediation Project,
HYPREP, yesterday,
disclosed that it has
commenced the selection
process for companies
that would be involved
in the cleanup of
Ogoniland.
The body responsible
for the remediation
process also dismissed
claims that the clean-up
had not begun, noting
that the process
commenced months ago.
The Project
Coordinator, HYPREP,
Dr. Marvin Dekil,
explained that the
project coordination unit
has started the selection
of companies that would
be involved in the
setting up of emergency
facilities for the clean-up
of oil impacted
communities of Ogoni.
Dekil, who was
represented by
HYPREP’s Head of
Communications, Issa
Wassa, while sensitizing
people of Kpean and
Buan communities in
Khana Local
Government Area of the
state, called for
cooperation among the
communities to allow for
a hitch-free clean up of
the impacted areas.
Dekil assured that Local
Content Laws would be
strictly followed during
the entire clean up
exercise, adding that the
communities would be
carried along in the
process.
