Whether your medium is the canvas or the camera, you’ll
have the CityEdge. You will visit art galleries, museums,
auction houses, and public art spaces. Meet leading
curators, artists, photographers, and designers. And
gain professional experience through internships in the
thriving creative industries and great cultural institutions
of New York City.
BA in Art
Art major courses are grounded in the process
of creative production within an integrated
study of theory, history, and practice. You’ll take
foundation courses in drawing, color and design,
and art history. And you can narrow your focus
with concentrations in studio art, photography,
graphic design, or illustration and animation.

with Studio Art as my major—
falling in love with the body in
relation to art history, visual

helped to solidify my choice to
be an artist in New York City.”

Mullican’s practice, as well as how
that artistic practice functions
as a business. As a young artist
beginning my own career and

“I was a double major in Graphic
Design and Digital Media and
Video Production. My senior solo
exhibit at the Hewitt Gallery of Art
embodied many subjects—early
animation, early film, silkscreen
printing, and the launch of a t-shirt
business. Every image on the t-shirts
I’ve coded in a program called
Processing. I either manipulated
it 100 percent myself via a mouse
tracker, or I let the computer
have some say in what it’s doing.
My work deals with digital
drawing, movement, and endless
algorithms.”

BA in Art History
MICHAEL QUITUISACA ’17
As an Art History major, you will develop a strong fundamental understanding of the discipline.
The curriculum covers a wide range of fields from ancient and classical to contemporary and
nonwestern. Courses in methodology provide instruction art history theory, and training in
studio art offers insight into the techniques of the artist. You will visit and study the collections
of museums, galleries and auction houses and gain firsthand experience through internships. All
students are encouraged to study abroad for at least a semester and develop their proficiency in
a foreign language. Qualified students are invited to pursue honors in art history.

FORGE YOUR OWN PATH
Minor in
Art Therapy
The Art Therapy minor links the disciplines of art and psychology.
Through theoretical and applied coursework and internships,
you’ll learn the basic principles and practices of the field.
Marymount Manhattan also offers minors in art therapy, arts
management, art history, studio art, photography, and graphic
design, so you can create a program of study that is suited
to your goals.
The Arts Management program is designed to train students
with business or art backgrounds for entry-level to mid-level
arts management positions. The curriculum covers cultural
institution administration and the theoretical concepts
and practical skills necessary for successful marketing,
funding, programming, and management.

Apply
Admission to programs in Studio Art, Photography,
Graphic Design, or Illustration and Animation requires
an art portfolio. You are required to submit a portfolio
of 12-15 examples of your best art work. A list of the
titles and media for each image should be included. An
artist statement or statement of your artistic aspirations
is optional. If you do not have a portfolio at the time
of application, you will be considered a provisional art
major; a faculty advisor will evaluate your work after the
first semester. Additionally, portfolios will be reviewed
for art scholarship consideration. Portfolios may be
submitted on the admissions portal once the application
for admission is completed. Please see the admission

Exhibit in
the Hewitt
Gallery of Art
The Hewitt Gallery of Art is a professional gallery and laboratory where you can gain
firsthand experience in exhibition practices. Marymount Manhattan students curate,
install, and present their work in individual and group exhibitions. The gallery is also
known in the New York art community as an alternative exhibition space, showcasing the
work of emerging and established contemporary artists. In addition, gallery receptions
give you opportunities to engage with professional artists, critics, collectors, and
curators. Many of the exhibiting artists are also guest presenters in our classes.
Art History applicants are not required to submit a
portfolio, but may submit a five- to seven-page research
paper on either a specific artist or artistic movement
for consideration of an art scholarship. This may be
submitted to the Office of Admission via email. Please
make reference in the subject line and on paper that
this submission is for consideration for the art history
scholarship. Please see the admission website for
