Scion takes out big wins in national science awards
Two scientists from Rotorua-headquartered Scion, the forestry
crown research institute, took out top awards at the recent
inaugural New Zealand Science Awards.
By DAVID PORTER
The awards celebrate the
25-year anniversary of
CRIs, and the contribution
they have made to science,
industry and New Zealand.
Scion forest pathologist Dr
Nari Williams was presented
an early career researcher
award for her work in forest
diseases, particularly
Phytophthora.
Her work in combating
Kauri dieback, red needle
cast and crown rot is part of
a research programme that
brings together researchers
from New Zealand’s primary
sector CRIs, universities and
overseas organisations.
She leads this programme
to defend New Zealand forests
and horticultural crops
from present and future
Phytophthora diseases.
Forest research veteran Dr
Dave Cown was awarded a
lifetime achievement award
for his work in wood science
and understanding the sources
of wood quality variation and
how to control it.
In the 40 years Dave spent
at Scion (originally the Forest
Research Institute), he was
responsible for creating the
Wood Processing Research
Group, which developed the
drying schedules now used by
most of the softwood industries
across the southern hemisphere.
Their work played a vital
role in growing the $2.9 billion
added-value wood products
industry.
Scion’s biosecurity team
picked up a team award
acknowledging their hard work.
numbers attracted to Winter
Jam, judging by the amount of
positive feedback. Tickets are
Williams and Dr Dave Cown for their work on behalf of
the forest and horticultural industries. Photo: Supplied
Their research has resulted
in successful management of
several new-to-science diseases
and development of a forestry
biosecurity surveillance
system considered by overseas
experts to be the best in the
world.
Their discovery of the pitch
canker pathogen in plants
held under quarantine avoided
establishment of a disease that
was predicted to cause more
than $400 million damage to
the forest industry.
The team also supported the
successful eradication of three
moth species that could have
damaged forestry, horticulture
and our native forests.
More recently, the team’s
work on determining the biosecurity
risk of Phytophthora
species on forest product
exports showed that there
was no risk to trading part-
The iconic Bay Dreams
music festival hits Baypark on
loss of more than $2 billion
Huge crowds will no doubt
enjoy this premium New
Zealand music festival with
another fantastic lineup of
International artists. Tickets are
It’s been a great month
for Bay of Plenty companies
and awards, with ZB Homes
BOP becoming the first construction
the national Deloitte Fast 50
the past three years. The annual
rapid revenue growth
over three years and sets the
Kudos to ZB Homes for its
David Porter
In the Bay’s key horticulture
sector, the decision by
Zespri to significantly ramp
up the issue of licences for
its SunGold have triggered
warnings by some post-harvest
processors who are wary of the
potential impact of the massive
boost, saying it will increase
the need to build expensive
under-utilised outside the
And of course, it took in the
BAY OF PLENTY BUSINESS NEWS November/December 2017 5
SunGold surge will
bring post-harvest
pressures
Some post-harvest processors are wary about the implications
a proposed big boost in SunGold kiwifruit plantings is likely to
have for industry infrastructure in coming years.
By RICHARD RENNIE
In late October Zespri
announced it would be
increasing the area available
for SunGold kiwifruit licences
from the anticipated 400ha
annually to 700ha a year. Four
new tranches will be offered
over the next four years.
This comes on top of the
800ha of SunGold licences
issued over the past two years,
and will take the total new area
of 3500ha by 2022.
The pressure SunGold places
on post-harvest resources is
particularly problematic due to
its compressed harvest period,
often down to only two to
three weeks compared with the
longer shoulder Green offers.
Michael Franks, chief executive
of Seeka, one of New
Zealand’s biggest processors
and growers, said he was conscious
that as long as volume
increased in a compressed harvest
time frame it would create
bottlenecks at post-harvest
points. And in the absence of
any compelling supply chain
innovation, this would require
more post-harvest investment.
“In reality we are going
to want to have some of the
fruit stored offshore. This is
not a new suggestion and we
have done this with a facility
in China.”
As volumes have risen,
Seeka has had to spend about
$15 million in storage facility
investment for short-term
housing of fruit. New Zealand
storage is estimated to cost
about $12 a tray to construct.
Franks sees this as an
inefficient use of shareholder
equity, with growers having to
pay to use the facilities. He’s
long been on the record voicing
frustration at what he has
viewed as industry inertia in
implementing offshore storage
and handling facilities. The
limited collaborative marketing
opportunities have meant
there has been little opportunity
to achieve this, he says.
David Courtney, Zespri’s
general manager of grower
and external relations, said the
organisation was acutely aware
that meeting market demand
was only part of the puzzle in
ensuring smooth delivery.
He confirmed off shore
processing and storage were
among the post-harvest options
the industry would need to
consider collectively.
“We are talking to growers
and packhouse operators on
meeting that opportunity in the
market, and how we can get
there together.”
Zespri is planning a roadshow
soon to lay out its
10-year plan for what the supply
side for fruit looks like.
Current SunGold production
is about 50 million trays.
Given maturity times and
increased areas being planted,
estimates are that once all the
3500ha of additional licence
area is at full production
sometime beyond 2022, total
SunGold production could
effectively double to 100 million-plus
trays.
Apata managing director
Stuart Weston said the post-harvest
industry had been taken
aback by the latest increase in
Gold licence and was still reeling
from the news and how it
would work in practice.
“Anything can be worked
through if we have the will to
collaborate on this,” he said.
“But it’s a massive increase
THE MIDAS TOUCH
• The SunGold conversion after the Psa outbreak and its
subsequent appeal in the market has resulted in the fruit
having a Midas touch upon orchard values.
• Early licences were issued for about $7000 per ha, and
the first tranche of 400ha averaged $171,000 per ha, while
last year’s 400ha issue saw values rise to $235,000 per ha.
• Bay of Plenty SunGold kiwifruit orchards are now
fetching $1 million per canopy ha, with some selling less
than a week after being listed.
from the original plan if
the industry is to maintain
Hayward numbers as Zespri
wants. It’s almost tantamount
to another Te Puke equivalent
in new plantings.”
Weston said there had
already been a slow realisation
that the post-harvest sector
was going to struggle to
cope with the initial SunGold
release plan.
“Zespri checked in with us
and asked how we saw it, and
our answer was, it’s going to
be a major challenge for capital
and labour. We need to front
fund the development of processing
capacity - that’s what
we were wrestling with. Then
they came out and increased
the hectarage again.”
The increased Gold could
exacerbate the problem of
more and more post-harvest
assets being utilised for a shorter
time, said Weston. However,
the increased SunGold licence
could also see an easing in the
hunger of Green growers to
convert to Gold, he added.
Zespri’s Courtney said the
packhouses were conscious of
the volumes coming and would
make decisions on how best
to handle and negotiate the
investment required to cope,
possibly bringing in outside
investment.
“We are aware of the pressures
that are likely to come
on. This season we are looking
at about 140 million trays
[Green and Gold combined],
which we can handle, but it
is year two and beyond where
things will get tighter.”
Courtney said this round
of licence offers, which closes
in April next year, was from
a single pool, rather than separating
grafted orchards from
green-fields development.
Over the past two years, of
the 800ha planted in SunGold,
500ha was cut over and grafted
onto Green orchards and
the remainder was green field
orchard developments.
Courtney confirmed Zespri
was conscious it did not want
to lose too much more Green
crop and that it was getting
close to that point now.
“We still need to have a
portfolio of Green fruit to offer
our markets, it is still a very
strong market.”
Port biosecurity plan likely to
be picked up nationally
Port of Tauranga has thrown up its best lines of defence in a
battle against biosecurity threats likely to only increase as the
busy cruise ship season kicks off.
By RICHARD RENNIE
The port picked up the
top industry award at the
inaugural Biosecurity
Awards earlier this year, in
recognition of the success
of its biosecurity excellence
initiative. And the initiative
looks likely to be adopted by
other major ports around the
country.
Launched only a year ago,
the initiative took a broad
community approach to dealing
with biosecurity threats. It
was conceived after the ravaging
impact of Psa on the kiwifruit
sector, and concerns over
the threat from ever-increasing
visits from cruise ship tourists.
The award recognised that
the initiative had lifted awareness
among port staff, operators
and the community about
regional and local biosecurity
threats.
New and existing staff
underwent a biosecurity induction,
while a calendar has
been distributed around the
community and port facility,
highlighting species that are
particular biosecurity threats.
Regular pest alert broadcasts
are also made about priority
threats that may have arisen.
There were 250,000 cruise
ship passengers passing
through the port last year, and
at least that many are expected
this year. Port of Tauranga
chief executive Mark Cairns
said he welcomed the work
done to educate tourists on
board their ships before they
docked about the risks bringing
fruit ashore posed to New
Zealand.
Cairns said the programme
has resulted in greater detection
of pests, including 147
detections of the dreaded marmorated
stink beetle. And he
said he understood the port
biosecurity initiative was due
to be adopted by other major
THE MILLION BOX PORT
Port of Tauranga was the first in New Zealand to
handle more than 1 million TEU (20 foot container
equivalents) annually.
ports around the country.
But despite the port’s
best efforts in keeping out
unwanted pests, high profile
“Bug man” Kleinpaste painted
a bleak picture for New
Zealand’s future biosecurity.
“I would say that with
147 detected incursions of the
marmorated stink bug detected
here in the past year it is a case
of not if, but when it arrives,”
said Kleinpaste, who was
speaking during the launch of
biosecurity awareness week in
early November at the port.
The bug could deliver devastating
effects upon horticultural
crops, reducing yields by
as much as 30 percent overseas.
“It has obviously found its
pathway here already.”
But Kleinpaste said there
was very likely worse diseases
to come if New Zealand did
not remain vigilant.
He pointed to his recent
encounter in Hawaii with its
“Ohi’a” fungal disease, which
is laying to waste large canopy
trees of the same species as
NZ’s pohutukawa, the ohi’a
tree.
“It can kill a whole forest in
five years.”
He was shocked by the
lax biosecurity standards in
Hawaii, with no quarantine
Kleinpaste: The “bugman” calls for continued vigilance on pest incursions.
requirements or cleaning standards
on equipment or visitors
coming off the affected island.
“And we are now seeing
a lot of New Zealanders head
to Hawaii for holidays. This
[disease] does not come on
the wind, it comes on shoes
and clothing. It just laughs at
myrtle rust.”
John Walsh, director of
communications channels
for Ministry for Primary
Industries said this year had
already been characterised by
three key incursions that were
of national concern.
One was the Bonamia
Ostreae infection in oysters.
This was followed by myrtle
rust infection, which was likely
to become more prevalent in
the summer months, and was
already devastating tracts of
forest on Raoul Island to the
north of NZ.
The third was Mycoplasma
Bovis in southern dairy herds.
Kleinpaste welcomed
the focus on getting all New
Zealanders engaged in biosecurity,
a core part of MPI’s
strategy.
“I love it that Port of
Tauranga won this award, but
we can do so much more on the
back of that, this is where your
community can be engaged and
active in identifying threats.”
BAY OF PLENTY BUSINESS NEWS November/December 2017 7
Bay software company’s compliance
solution for soaring growth in beehives
Bay of Plenty company ApiTrak has spent
seven years developing a unique platform
it believes will safeguard the more than
800,000 hives in New Zealand, and satisfy
overseas market access requirements.
ApiTrak says its software
is globally unique and
allows everyone - from
hobbyists with 10 hives, to
corporates with more than
10,000 - to easily track and
verify their product throughout
the value chain.
Founder and chief executive
Hayden Stowell says
ApiTrak can maintain the confidence
of overseas consumers
and regulators in the integrity
of New Zealand Manuka
honey, by ring-fencing the
industry to easily identify stolen
or adulterated product and
provide consumers with clear
traceability.
“Consumers worldwide are
increasingly seeking assurances
that everything they eat is
safe and can be reliably traced
back to its point of origin.
They want to be able to connect
with where their honey
is from.”
Stowell, who has been
involved in the Manuka honey
industry since the early 2000s,
founded the Honey Network
honey auction site, and is a
member of the Maori Honey
Working Group.
He says the surge in beekeeping
over the past five
years has created an increased
need to safeguard the valuable
honey industry.
“By June last year there
were estimated to be almost
700,000 beehives. This has
grown by at least 100,000
since - our industry is in fast
growth.
Consumers worldwide
are increasingly
seeking assurances
that everything they
eat is safe and can be
reliably traced back
to its point of origin.
They want to be able
to connect with where
their honey is from.
“The high market demand
for Manuka honey in particular
is driving an increase in hive
numbers.
ApiTrak’s Hayden Stowell: Providing consumers
with clear traceability. Photo: Supplied
“And with larger numbers
entering the industry, there
are more pressures on land
use, and an increased need to
ensure hives are correctly sited
and that honey can be securely
tracked from beehive through
to shelf.”
ApiTrak software can be
utilised at every step of the
supply chain and its authentication
system verifies product
and captures all critical tracking
events.
The cloud-based, GS1 compliant
system allows users to
track honey throughout the
supply chain, utilising small
NFC (near field communication)
tags, which are attached
to hives, drums and jars.
Stowell says the ApiTrak
complements existing systems
and is managed through a webbased
platform and proprietary
smart phone apps, meaning no
expensive extra hardware is
needed.
Jamie Te Hiwi, customer
manager in New Zealand Trade
& Enterprise’s Maori Business
Team, said global consumers
were demanding the highest
standards of food safety
throughout the supply chain.
“We also know the risk we
run if the consumer loses trust
in our ability to control the
safety of their food. To earn
more from the food we export,
solutions like ApiTrak will
help attract the premium price
from consumers willing to buy
the intangible attributes like
food safety, country of origin
labelling, and traceability.”
Sean Goodwin, chief executive
of 100% Pure New Zealand
Honey, and a member of
ApiTrak’s advisory board, said
the ApiTrak team had put in a
great deal of effort to engage
industry participants and ensure
they not only created an innovative
system, but one that would
be widely utilised.
Goodwin, who is also deputy
chair of both Apiculture
New Zealand and GS1 NZ and
so has strong insight into the
requirements of industry and
international standards, says
ApiTrak has significant potential
on the global stage.
ApiTrak says its cloudbased
platform makes food
safety compliance easy and
significantly cuts down on
paperwork for apiarists, processing
facilities and marketing
companies.
The system also has potential
applications beyond the
honey industry to a range of
other food producers.
Victor Goldsmith, general
manager of Ngati Porou Miere
Limited Partnership, who also
serves on ApiTrak’s advisory
board, said the partnership
owned 1000 hives on its own
land blocks and would continue
to increase the numbers.
“We need to give our customers
assurance that what
they are buying is authentic
and we will be able to demonstrate
this with ApiTrak.
“As we grow the business
to include extraction processing
and bottling, we will be
one of the only honey businesses
that is truly integrated
from the land right through
to the brand. ApiTrak will be
vital to our growth.”
Creation on the run
ProCell may not have won this year’s Young Enterprise Scheme
awards, which we cover in detail in this month’s Venture Centre
feature on pages 16-17. But the team from Aquinas College
learnt a lot on a journey and won the hearts of a lot of fans, says
team member Leith Franks.
ProCell, with Franks and
fellow team members
Taine Mcleod, Sean
Mullaly, Max van der Zalm,
Matthew Lowe and Callum
Aubrey, came up with the idea
of a single use protein pack for
busy, energetic people.
“Proteins are usually sold
in big 2kg tubs,” says Franks.
“We created a single use
packet for endurance athletes
who are busy, and maybe
like to bike or run to work.
We turned it into a bite-sized
product.”
The team got together to
create something for its business
unit at school, and took
part in Mashup, at which point,
says Franks, they had no idea
what they were doing.
“We found out we could also
enter for YES, so we thought
that would be fun because
there are so many more things
you can do, including meeting
up with Venture Centre and all
those entrepreneurs.”
The team appreciated the
no-nonsense and straightforward
approach of Venture
Centre’s team, in helping them
understand for themselves,
using all the tools, digitally
and otherwise to validate what
would and would not work.
One of the major issues
ProCell had to come to terms
with was making sure their
product met health and safety
requirements.
“We didn’t know too much
about it,” says Franks. “We
thought we could just make it
straight away, but you had to go
out and meet all these requirements
regarding the kitchen.
“ProCell had to create
its own protein mix, and we
worked through the school
kitchens, which were certified
for preparing food.”
Taine Mcleod adds: “YES
helped us realise that business
was something ProCell
would love to do, but that it
really requires hard work and
the sleeves have to always be
rolled up or else we’d be in
trouble and take a few hits.”
The team members are all
completing year 13 and will go
on to other things when they
leave school.
“But the goal for most of
us is to end up in some sort of
business,” says Franks.
“The process with Venture
Centre and Mashup and the
YES awards absolutely works.
“It gives you a link up with
people from other schools and
entrepreneurs who are out
there actually doing it. You
need to be out there with other
people trying to go down a
similar path.”
The ProCELLl team learnt a lot about starting a business
from the YES awards. Photo: Venture Centre.
help keep your mind sharp -
and add to your conversational
skills for networking.
You can also think outside
the box when it comes
to developing new skills. For
example, you can learn by giving
back and volunteering.
Join a non-profit or charity
to use your current skills or
work on new skillsets.
Of course, there is the more
traditional avenue for learning
including seminars, workshops
and tertiary courses.
By trying something
new, you are
encouraging your
mind to be open
to diverse ways
of thinking and
experiences.
They can be very beneficial
for specific learning in your
industry or field. So don’t rule
these out, but make sure you
look for other ways to learn
as well.
Our key advice is to make
sure you maintain a reading
routine. Those CEOs who read
60 books a year get the fact
that most problems and challenges
are not new.
They know someone has
already found a solution and
written about it. They recognise
the tips and knowledge
that business books provide.
If you’re not a big reader
(and yes, some people just
don’t enjoy reading books)
then don’t give up. Turn to the
internet.
Look for summaries of popular
business books, because
we can guarantee someone has
written a summary with the
key points from all popular
business books.
Regularly read a variety
of online blogs. Podcasts,
videos and audio books are
great options for non-readers
as well.
At Firestation we believe
learning is crucial to our personal
success as well as the
success of our organisations.
We give every new client a
book. We also have a library in
our boardroom that clients can
buy or borrow from.
The top books we always
make sure we have multiple
copies of are:
– The Unfair Fight
by Sam Hazeldine
– Start with Why
by Simon Sinek
– Little Book of Leadership
by Jeffrey Gitonmer
– Mindset by Carol S Dweck
– Primal Leadership
by Daniel Goleman.
Our other key message to
clients is to execute. Learning
has no benefit if you don’t use
it. Make sure you apply what
you learn.
The best time to sell your business could be right now.
WE ARE REALISTIC
Technology research giant
Gartner estimates that
by 2020 there will be
more than 20 billion connected
devices worldwide that will
be collecting and distributing
data.
This mass of information is
transforming the way we shop,
study, exercise, bank, navigate,
deliberate, watch, fly, eat
and sleep. Data collection and
analysis is imbedded in every
conceivable industry.
This is leading to different
business models, different
labour skillsets, different
knowledge requirements and
information. Consumer data
and applied analytics offer
businesses objective insights
into what customers want and
the power to deliver it.
The underlying premise is
that technology will continue
to make many aspects of our
lives easier and our businesses
potentially more profitable.
But for everybody, one of
the key challenges will be an
increasing focus on maintaining
cyber security
Most small business owners
don’t spend a lot of time wor-
rying about their data. They
may have secure passwords,
but not think much about keeping
them updated until money
starts going missing or a website
is taken down.
Those among the great
majority of New Zealand businesses
that are in the small to
medium sized enterprise category,
in particular, can fall into
the trap of thinking their business
wouldn’t make a good
target. Or they may rely on
their bank to alert them when
something has gone wrong.
But no-one is too small to
be targeted. Many cyber scams
work precisely on the basis of
extracting small amounts from
many thousands of victims
worldwide.
And these days robbers
don’t need to physically walk
into a targeted bank brandishing
sawn-off shotguns. They
only need internet access to
send phishing emails that may
attach malicious software to
banks’ computers, to access
accounts or even bank vaults.
Cyber attackers used to target
computers and networks
to steal or tamper with data.
Now, cyber attackers target
almost everything. Any devices
that can be connected to cyberspace
or that rely on computer
systems are vulnerable.
Mobile phones and their
connected cellular networks
can be hacked. Ransomware
can make our files inaccessible
until we pay a ransom. But
it can also lock us in a room
or keep us out of the fridge.
These days cyber attacks can
impact not just our computers,
but also our lives.
Thieves don’t always go
for your accounts. There is an
increase in identity theft and
fraud.
If you hold customer information
it is important that
steps are taken to prevent the
unthinkable.
A new government
has finally been sworn in,
Christmas is almost here, and
there are some 500 working
days between now and 2020.
Hopes hotel development
could spur others
Waikato business leaders are hoping the
expansion of the Novotel Tainui Hotel will
spur on other hotel developers to invest
in Hamilton.
By GEOFF TAYLOR
The Novotel Tainui
Hamilton hotel will
undergo a 40-room
expansion next year to serve
the hotel’s growing customer
base in the quality accommodation
market.
Waikato Chamber of
Commerce chief executive
William Durning.
Tainui Group Holdings
chief executive Chris Joblin
says the $13 million investment
will make a significant
contribution to the vitality of
the Hamilton CBD.
“With the new extension,
Novotel Tainui Hamilton will
be able to offer 217 contemporary
rooms and suites to
Hamilton & Waikato
Tourism chief executive
Jason Dawson.
guests, ensuring Hamilton has
a hotel offering of the quality
and scale to match demand as
the city grows as a business
and visitor centre over the next
few years,” Mr Joblin says.
The extension will have
four levels with ten rooms per
level, with the new rooms to
be the same size and layout
as typical rooms within the
existing hotel.
Dick Breukink, general
manager Novotel & Ibis
Tainui, says bathrooms in all
of the Novotel’s 177 existing
rooms are also currently being
renovated.
“We are excited about the
extension and the fact that
tourism is going so well.
We’ve seen the results reflected
in our hotels in the last couple
of years and there is more
potential in the market.”
Waikato Chamber of
Commerce CEO William
Durning welcomed the investment.
“It’s great that Tainui is getting
in there and further investing.
We need to be encouraging
others to back the same
visionary view.
“Without knowing at what
stage other hotel offerings are
at, if those providers out there
Auckland pressures drive
up demand at Inland Port
An artist’s impression, looking from Alma St, of the new look Novotel Tainui
Hamilton Hotel.
can see that others are recognising
there is an opportunity,
it might also encourage them
to move.”
Hamilton mayor Andrew
King says TGH’s announcement
was “fantastic”.
“We need a lot more rooms
at the top end of the market.”
“I believe there’s scope for
another 400 rooms in the city
and they will come with time.”
Hamilton & Waikato
Tourism chief executive Jason
Dawson is thrilled and says
Hamilton has a challenge to
provide enough large scale 4-5
star hotel accommodation during
busy periods.
“For example, recently in
Hamilton we had a teaching
conference of 1500 strong,
Equidays at Mystery Creek
with exhibitors, performers,
competitors, suppliers and visitors,
a burgeoning business
and leisure traveller market,
plus school holidays. All of
this creates a high demand for
quality hotel accommodation
in our city”.
“The extra 40-rooms will
help fulfil the need and will
easily be absorbed by current
market demand. It’s also great
that some of the new rooms
will provide river views which
is an iconic feature of our city
and region.”
“The additional bed inventory
for the hotel sector will
also allow us to further develop
our lucrative business
events and conference market
who demand this level of hotel
accommodation.”
“Every conference we
can secure for Hamilton and
Waikato is significant for the
region, regardless of the sector
or size. Conference delegates
are also influenced to return
for a future holiday based on
their positive Waikato experiences.”
“A delegate attending a
business event is worth twice
as much as a leisure traveller
to the region, with an average
delegate per night value of
$350 per night for international
delegates and $509 per night
for domestic delegates.”
The hotel is owned by
Waikato-Tainui through its
intergenerational investment
arm TGH.
Construction of the extra
rooms is expected to start in
mid-2018, with the extension
scheduled to open by mid-
2019, and Mr Joblin says every
effort will be made to minimise
noise and visual disruption to
guests and hotel operations.
Rukumoana Schaafhausen,
chair of Te Arataura, the executive
committee of Waikato-
Tainui says the expansion is a
statement of confidence in the
economic future of Hamilton,
Waikato and the Iwi.
Waikato-Tainui also owns
the 126 room Ibis Hamilton
Tainui hotel, and at Auckland
Airport, has a half share in the
263 room Novotel Auckland
Airport, with a fourth hotel,
Pullman Auckland Airport
– Te Arikinui – (300 rooms)
jointly under development
with Auckland International
Airport Ltd.
PRINZ Conference
coup for Hamilton
Land costs and other pressures
are pushing up
interest in Tainui Group
Holdings’ industrial land next
to its Inland Port, according
to TGH chief executive Chris
Joblin.
As TGH gains resource
consent to subdivide the
48 hectare industrial site
Mr Joblin says it is getting
strong demand particulary
from Auckland for large scale
industrial sites.
“Land costs and usage pressures
in South Auckland have
been driving inquiry south and
we are in talks with a number
of major manufacturers and
distributors seeking large scale
sites to future proof their operations,”
Mr Joblin says.
These industrial resource
consents mean TGH can provide
potential industrial tenants
with time certainty about
relocating their operations.
Being adjacent to the inland
port, these early movers will
be best placed to get the full
benefits of the wider 480 hectare
precinct.
“We are experiencing a
high level of customer and
tenant inquiries particularly
from major warehousing and
distribution businesses looking
to relocate outside Auckland
including significant players
in construction equipment and
materials, food and drink processing,
and from within the
dairy, forestry, horticulture and
retailing sectors.
“Our potential tenants and
customers can now be assured
in their own planning for warehouses,
distribution sites, pack
houses or other facilities to
take advantage of sites which
are well connected by road
and rail and offer port neutrality
between Auckland and
Tauranga. That certainty will
be appreciated by businesses
taking a long-term view of
their own growth as well as
growth in the golden triangle,”
Mr Joblin says.
With direct connection to
the future Waikato Expressway,
the industrial zoning opens up
opportunities for a wide range
of development options.
Mr Joblin says the 48ha
site, with its easy access to
prime productive regions,
lends itself to export activities,
such as packing facilities
or horticultural exports.
Importers are also suited as
two million people live within
140km, lending itself towards
North Island or regional distribution
centres for food products
or retail merchandise.”
Leasing inquiries for the
wider Ruakura precinct are
being managed by leading
industrial leasing specialists
JLL.
Sam Smith, head of
Industrial for JLL, confirms
that inquiry levels are strong
for large footprint sites in
Waikato.
“New distribution-based
business models requiring more
scale, efficiencies and connectivity
are driving a significant
number of businesses to consolidate
smaller, older and fragmented
sites into larger, well
connected central developments,”
says Mr Smith.
Meanwhile leading civil
engineering and resources
company Fulton Hogan is
well advanced with the initial
works covering the first six
hectares of what will eventually
be a 31 hectare inland port
with the capacity to handle
around one million TEUs (20
foot container equivalents) per
year when fully built. TGH,
along with its JV partner LINX
Cargo Care Group Ltd expects
to commence initial operations
at the inland port in the first
half of 2019.
Some of New Zealand’s
top public relations
specialists are heading
to Hamilton and Waikato
following the announcement
that the Public Relations
Institute of New Zealand
(PRINZ) will be holding
its annual conference in the
region in 2018.
Held at Hamilton’s
Claudelands Event Centre
on May 30-31, the conference
is expecting more than
150 delegates, with a visit
to Hobbiton Movie Set and
other Waikato experiences
on the programme.
PRINZ chief executive
Elaine Koller said the ease
of Hamilton’s location, the
strength of the membership
and active Waikato branch
committee influenced the
decision to come to the
region.
“This is the first time
that the annual conference
has been held in Waikato
in PRINZ’s 63-year history.
The decision to come
to Waikato is testimony to
the strong support of our
Waikato members and local
committee, plus the fact that
Waikato is just a couple of
hours’ drive for many of
our PRINZ members in the
Central North Island, or a
short flight for those further
afield,” Elaine said.
Heather Claycomb,
director of Hamilton-based
HMC Communications
and Waikato regional representative
on the PRINZ
National Council, said the
conference was a great
chance for PR industry colleagues
to come together
to learn, network and have
some fun.
“We have a strong
community of public relations
professionals here in
Waikato and collectively
we are excited about showcasing
Hamilton and the
wider region to members of
PRINZ.”
“As the country’s leading
communicators, PRINZ
members are continually
looking to upskill and stay
on the cutting edge of the
public relations profession.
Participating in our annual
conference is a great way to
stay on top.”
Hamilton & Waikato
Tourism CEO Jason Dawson
said the PRINZ conference
was a great win for the destination,
with many influential
people attending the
conference.
“We have some of the
most experienced and
emerging talent within the
public relations and communications
industry in our
country coming to our great
region.
“These delegates work
across all industries, are
well-connected, utilise social
and mainstream media and
aren’t shy to tell others about
their experiences,” Jason says.
“Our central location,
fantastic conference spaces,
easy travel times and
great options for activities
and dining are just some of
the reasons why Hamilton
and Waikato are now the
third largest region behind
Auckland and Wellington for
conventions, meetings and
business events (year ending
June 2017), based on delegate
days and number of
business events.”
“We look forward to
hosting them in the Mighty
Waikato and showcasing the
best we have to offer” he
added.

DELOITTES FAST 50
BAY OF PLENTY BUSINESS NEWS November/December 2017 13
ZB Homes BOP the first construction company
to take the top slot on the Deloitte Fast 50
Residential home builders ZB Homes
BOP have taken the number one ranking
on this year’s Deloitte Fast 50 index with
an impressive 1583 percent revenue
growth over the past three years. This is
the first time in the history of the index
that a construction business has taken
the top slot.
By DAVID PORTER
The annual index ranks
businesses experiencing
rapid revenue growth
over three years and sets the
benchmark for high growth
businesses in New Zealand.
ZB Homes BOP is a residential
home building pioneer,
building a wide range of new
homes and investment properties.
Starting from an initial
land stake in The Lakes development
at Tauriko, the company
now builds houses across
the region,
Managing director Rik
Flowerday said the company
was encouraged to enter the
Deloitte Fast 50 by its accountants,
Deloitte, and its bankers
at BNZ.
“We knew we’d been
through a big growth period -
we’re building 70-75 houses a
year,” he said.
“We knew what our numbers
were against building
consents, but that’s up against
other building companies.
We just had our head down. I
didn’t have any inkling until
we got the award of how well
we were doing against other
businesses across the country.”
Deloitte Private Partner Bill
Hale says the Fast 50 programme,
now in its 17th year,
is more than just another business
awards programme.
“The Deloitte Fast 50 is an
active community of intrepid
business trailblazers looking
to achieve great things for their
companies,” says Hale.
“It does more than just
rank New Zealand’s 50 fastest-growing
businesses. It celebrates
business success and
growth across the spectrum –
from early stage companies
to mature businesses – on a
regional and national stage.”
Flowerday said the experience
of ranking first had been
humbling and he put the win
down to the attitude of the ZB
Homes BOP team.
“We’ve had a continuous
improvement approach to
everything we do,” he said.
Flowerday said the key
Fast growth: (from left) BNZ head of small business Harry Ferreira, with ZB Homes BOP’s Zane
Beckett, Fiona and Rik Flowerday, and Deloitte partner Andrew Boivin. Photo/Supplied.
issue for the construction
industry recently had been rising
prices. But he said that
the company endeavoured to
absorb increases rather than
pass them on to clients.
“One of the challenges is
keeping in front of supplier
increases so we try and push
back so we can deliver on our
promise to home buyers.
ZB Homes BOP has three
basic spec ranges - Easy
Living, a set plan and spec
house and land package,
Individual, a design and build
offering, and Unlimited, where
clients can build their dream
house.
“One of the things we
enjoy about what we do is
that no build is the same and
our builders appreciate that we
provide a range of work.”
CONSTANT
IMPROVEMENT
KEY TO NZ’S
FASTEST
GROWING
BUSINESS
With an impressive 1583% revenue growth over a three year period, ZB Homes BOP
is the first company in the construction industry to ever take the top spot in these
prestigious awards.
Rik and his wife, Fiona Flowerday built their business from the ground
up to an incredible 70 homes per year in just three years.
The couple returned home from Australia where they had run another
property development operation to live on Fiona’s family farm in
2012. After doing their market research, in October 2014, together they
set up the Tauranga business, in partnership with Zane Beckett of ZB
Homes Waikato. They started in the garage of their first show home
and back then Rik and Fiona were the only two in the office. In the
field, they had a team of two builders who had moved across from
ZB Waikato.
Fast-forward to October 2017, and there are now 13 office staff plus a
big team of builders, managed by two construction managers and a
large number of preferred sub-contractors whose businesses
have grown along with ZB Homes’ growth. They work with four
different architecture businesses and have partnered with design
company Yellowfox.
At the beginning their focus was on selling, Rik says. But that soon
changed to client service and quality processes which are now
key to their success.
A philosophy that is one of the key success components is a strong
focus on systems needed to support the business at the level
of activity.
“Systems that support building 25 homes per year don’t work for 50
and the systems that work for 50 don’t support 75. So, we decided
to take a continuous improvement approach. I always say, mistakes
happen, and making a mistake is not the problem – but repeating
a mistake is a problem. You need to put systems in place to prevent
mistakes from recurring.”
Our focus is on design and build, with a strong emphasis on
workmanship and quality to suit the client’s lifestyle, regardless
of the budget.
Rik says the win is a team effort. “Our staff are everything. We work
in an extremely fast-paced environment and our staff do an amazing
job. Construction in Tauranga is booming, there are many pressures
and everyone has many jobs to juggle. We really appreciate our team,
and want to take them on the journey with us.”
Our aim is to create a robust business that will withstand market
fluctuations and the test wof time.”

“We are really proud to be
named New Zealands fastest
growing company 2017”
“We are demonstrating
to parents
in Tauranga
and Western Bay that they
can tap a whole community
of support to improve their
children’s digital and entrepreneurial
future,” says Venture
Centre co-founder and director
Jo Allum.
“Their young people can
access real-world expertise
from people who have stepped
forward to be role models, mentors,
coaches and facilitators
of learning outside the school
curriculum and school hours.
All the while encouraging and
connecting teachers at our high
schools to add a real-world
layer to the curricula required
by the Ministry of Education.
This kind of community support
in-and-out of school adds
to the experience of learners. It
makes it real.
Venture Centre has
been really helpful.
When you email
them they always
respond.
If we needed
something, they
would always reply
and help us out.”
- Wider Horizons’
Adriana Vickers
Venture Centre’s Make-A-Dent
Ventures is bringing together a pathway
of learning opportunities for students,
which is embedded in the local
community of entrepreneurs and digitally
minded people.
multiple learning opportunities.
Examples include Codebrite
(coding workshops), Mashup
(a series of three events), and
the region’s Young Enterprise
Scheme (YES) run in schools,
which last month saw winners
selected at the regional finals
held at Toi Ohomai Institute of
Technology. The winners go
through to the National finals
in Wellington on December 6.
YES is an in-school programme
with a 35-year history,
supported by The Lion
Foundation. Past winners
include Xero founder Rod
Drury. Venture Centre facilitates
the scheme alongside
teachers, connecting youth taking
part with mentors, introducing
and working with them
through the Lean Canvas (a
globally recognised business
startup tool), and making sure
students get support relevant to
their specific businesses.
Venture Centre co-founder
Pascale Hyboud-Peron, an
organiser of Mashup and
co-ordinator for YES, says
it has been fantastic to see
more than 150 young people
in the Western Bay effectively
become entrepreneurs this year.
“Our aim has always been
to provide youth with an opportunity
for hands-on learning
about being an entrepreneur by
starting their own business,”
she says.
“There were six Mashup
teams and 21 YES teams across
six secondary schools in our
region. The talent is here and
we are delighted that so many
of these young people choose to
be part of the authentic learning
opportunities MADVentures
co-ordinates – to experience
being an entrepreneur for real.
It gives them the skills and
mindset they need to be successful
whatever path they wish
to pursue.”
The Mashup programme
currently has three elements
- Mini Mashup (the ideation
phase – finding a problem
worth solving), Mashup (where
teams take their ideas, via a
research process, through to
prototyping their product and
business), and Mentor Mash.
“Mentor Mash is especially
important because it gives
young people a chance to parse
feedback from experienced
entrepreneurs and get input
from digital experts,” says
Allum.
“It’s very different from a
school situation where you may
be told what to do. At Mentor
Mash, participants learn that
it’s up to them to decide whether
the input they get fits with
what they are trying to achieve
in a market. It’s about them
being confident in their own
choices and research with customers,
so as to be able to evaluate
feedback from mentors.
Developing critical thinking is
“It is actually about ‘the village’
coming together to raise
entrepreneurs,” she says.
Make-A-Dent, or ‘MAD’
Ventures as it is known, is
an over-arching initiative
that curates and coordinates
youth-focused events, programmes
and workshops as
part of the region’s Digital
Enablement Project (DEP).
BAY OF PLENTY BUSINESS NEWS November/December 2017
17
a really important part of the
mix in building a startup business.”
The YES winners in the
region who will go through to
the national finals on December
6 in Wellington are Otumoetai
College team Wider Horizons,
and Tauranga Girls College
team Brite, who took part in
both YES and Mashup.
Wider Horizons’ product
addresses the problem that
early childhood education students
don’t have a product to
help them learn numbers in Te
Reo Maori. Their solution – a
series of illustrated flashcards,
with 200 sets already sold.
The team is made up of
Adriana Vickers, Phoebe
Adler, Natalie Dawick, Melissa
Gilmour, Amya Wharry and
Faith Merrick.
“We started research into the
best ways children learn,” says
Adriana Vickers. “We discovered
these interactive resources,
which could be used by teacher
and child, with really bright
cards, work best.”
A lot of research went into
sourcing the best images and
card quality at the best price,
with support coming from
Mount Maunganui’s The Big
Picture, whose owner had taken
part in a YES event at high
school.
Vickers explained the team
was undecided yet about whether
to continue the business, but
was working hard to sell out its
stock to boost its chances at the
YES national finals.
“Venture Centre has been
really helpful. When you email
them they always respond. If
we needed something, they
would always reply and help
us out.”
Tauranga Girls College’s
BriteNZ team was a winner
of multiple local youth events
in 2017. Having started the
year as winners of the handson
Mashup event, then winning
an awards event supported
by Priority One – the Youth
Innovators Awards (YIA) –
they then received runner-up
honours in the YES regional
awards.
The team addressed
the problem of how to help
Dyslexia sufferers, in particular
those who have Irlen
Syndrome, a problem with the
brain’s ability to process visual
information. Sufferers currently
only have two choices to manage
the disability – expensive
glasses with coloured lenses, or
cheap films of coloured acetate,
which don’t work well for all
users and are not long-lasting
– both of which aim to reduce
the contrast between black and
QrtHori_BOPBN_Basestation_Oct17.pdf 1 17/10/17 10:37 AM
white on a page. Brite’s solution
is a portable light with coloured
LEDs, which can be positioned
over reading material.
Maddy Skyes and fellow
team members Abbey
Herbison, Ashley Cundy and
CJ Dobbs initially pitched the
idea to their school to form a
YES team, but didn’t make
it. Proving that young entrepreneurs
are determined and
resourceful when they identify
a problem to solve, they
then entered Mashup themselves,
prototyped the business
and validated the customer
base, decided to create their
own YES team and then were
accepted, subsequently also
winning their school’s endorsement
and support.
“Brite uses colour changing
LED technology, and shines a
coloured overlay of light over
the page,” she says.
The team has been through
several prototypes and is currently
working to finalise
a revised prototype with 3
Design, a local 3D design company.
They are definite about
their intention to continue
developing the Brite business.
Sykes said Venture Centre
had played a crucial role in
helping the team.
“The Venture Centre team
are amazing,” she says. “Every
time you go to their coworking
space Basestation you walk
out totally inspired. They just
connect so many people and
are able to hook you up with
all different types of specialists
throughout the Bay of Plenty
The Bay’s young entrepreneurs will go global
A
new initiative aims to
take aspiring youth to
Mashup digital, entrepreneurial
and cultural experiences
in Japan.
Venture Centre and Let’s
Homestay are working on a
new Mashup element, an international
experience for young
people, slated to take place in
September 2018. The trip for
13 -18 year olds to Tauranga’s
Japanese sister city Hitachi will
be a distinctly entrepreneurial
experience, drawing on the
years of knowledge and extensive
network of Stuart Cundy,
director of Let’s Homestays,
working in partnership with
Venture Centre.
“Setting young people up
with a mindset able to accept,
and learn to understand other
cultures – and their context as
potential international customers
– is crucial to young New
Zealanders entrepreneurial success,”
says Venture Centre’s
Pascale Hyboud Peron, her-
self a migrant from France,
who has been responsible for
high school students from New
Zealand going to France to
commemorate WW1 over the
last three years.
“Exporting to other countries,
with other languages,
and ways of life is how our
country makes its way in the
world. The only way to deliver
this mindset development is to
‘do’. To go to other countries
with a clear focus on learning.”
The pilot trip, currently in
its planning stages, includes
a visit to Hitachi Technical
Senior High School owned by
a leading Japanese production
company, Hitachi Ltd, with a
tour of one of their production
factories. It is hoped this
will give the young people an
understanding of the origins
of ‘lean’ (or Kaizen) business
practices.
Time will be spent at the
technical school, known as
known as Nissenko, where
New vision from Tauranga Girls College’s team Brite.
students learn about manufacturing
and design as a core
element of their curricula. All
graduates of the school go on
to work in Hitachi’s manufacturing
plants to make, develop
and take the company into the
future.
Homestay and cultural
activities will maximise the
experience of culture, electronics,
robotics and food.
“We came up with this idea
after my daughter took part and
got help from Venture Centre
through Mashup and YES this
year,” says Cundy, whose Let’s
Homestay business manages
thousands of visitors into and
out of Tauranga each year.
“I could see the relationship
between what my girl was
learning-by-doing and what
happens at school, and business
in Hitachi. It didn’t take
long to nut out an outline of
what we could achieve together
with the Venture Centre team.”
Venture Centre’s co-founders
are looking forward to this
test initiative as a first step
towards their ambition to take
young people to Mashup with
connections the team have in
the entrepreneurial and digital
ecosystems of Australia, UK,
France, Germany, the US and
Tauranga’s Chinese sister city
Yantai, in the future.
The project also aims to
help Let’s Homestay expand its
business and its proven systems
to facilitate safe, international
who are ready to help.”
Peter Richardson, Faculty
Leader Business Management
and Legal Studies at Toi
Ohomai, says partnerships
with organisations like Venture
Centre are key in creating a
pipeline of young entrepreneurial
talent.
“Programmes like YES and
MashUp allow young people
to develop their ideas in a realworld
setting with access to
mentors from the local business
community,” says Richardson.
“As a technical institute, Toi
Ohomai’s strength is in realworld
application – ultimately
we want to connect to the
support, guidance and practical
experience so young people can
turn their ideas into profitable
businesses.”
Students and Let’s Homestay hosts build
long lasting International relationships.
travel for young people in the
process. All of which will help
make a world of opportunities
for New Zealand’s young
entrepreneurs happen more
readily over time.
HR, MANAGEMENT AND RECRUITMENT
The impact of reward and recognition on
the employee experience
RemNet (www.remnet.org.nz) is a not-for-profit organisation
providing remuneration and human resources (HR) specialists
throughout New Zealand with an effective tool to connect,
network and share knowledge and information.
By NIGEL MURPHY
consultant, Strategic Pay
The organisation is run by
a voluntary committee of
industry representatives
and Strategic Pay is proud
to support the committee as
executive managers.
At their recent annual
conference, attendees delved
into the theme “Crossing the
chasm: Embracing tomorrow’s
rewards today.”
One speaker, Samantha
Gadd of Humankind, captured
many of the messages running
through the conference
with her talk on the impact of
reward and recognition on the
modern employee experience.
Samantha explained that
employee experience is a top
HR trend globally that borrows
from customer experience.
Customer experience is
the product of the interaction
between an organisation and
a customer over the duration
of their relationship. The goal
is to optimise the interactions
from the customer’s perspective
to foster customer loyalty.
Employee experience is
similar. It is the product of the
interaction between an organisation
and an employee over
the duration of their relationship.
The goal is optimising the
interactions from the employee’s
perspective to foster
employee engagement.
Samantha Gadd said it was
little wonder that organisations
that lead the way in customer
experience were also some
of those leading the way in
employee experience.
The whole organisation
thinking that comes together
to deliver a great customer
experience is the same competency
that underpins a great
employee experience.
Employee experience is a
great lens for considering pay.
Pay is as important to employees
as price is to customers.
However, a multitude of
other factors shape employee
engagement and customer
loyalty.
Pay needs to be considered
in the wider context of
reward and recognition to better
understand and influence
the employee experience.
This means considering
intrinsic rewards (such as
work content and purpose) and
extrinsic rewards (such as pay
and monetary and non-monetary
benefits and recognition).
At Strategic Pay we assist
organisations to develop
reward and recognition propositions
that consider employee
experience to attract, retain
and engage top talent.
Hit the ground running in
2018 by upskilling your staff
HUMAN RESOURCES
> BY KELLIE HAMLETT
Director, Recruitment & HR Specialist, Talent ID Recruitment Ltd
Your employees are your
organisation’s greatest
asset, so it makes good
sense to nurture, mould and
develop that talent to meet
your needs, both for now and
in the future.
Strategically, identifying
talent early, along with having
a development plan for these
individuals, ultimately adds
value to the bottom line.
This has been evidenced
through the obvious increase
in employee engagement,
decreased staff turnover and
lower recruitment costs.
It can also often result in
direct financial improvements,
with an increase in turnover
and profitability due to
employees being more effective
in their day-to-day job.
Investing in the development
of your team has a twofold
benefit – not only are
you engaging your staff more
deeply, but you are investing
in your company and ensuring
it gains up-to-date knowledge
and ideas, and is in tune with
the fast-changing competitive
environment within your
industry. A short-term investment,
used in the right way,
provides long-term benefits.
Training and development
can be a useful tool to identify
employees that are working
beneath their capacity.
People can always perform
better, more efficiently and
effectively.
Individual underperformance
has a knock-on effect
that should not be under-estimated
- it has a direct correlation
to team dissatisfaction
inherently affecting the overall
business goals.
It can also affect the quality
of service, professionalism and
the overall production of the
company.
That means underperformance
can come at a huge
cost to the company.
Identification of development
needs is the first step.
However, implementing and
managing effective change is
the second, and ordinarily the
hardest.
Sending your employees
away on training courses is
easily done, but following up
on what was learnt is the challenge
and where the value is
gained.
Review what has been
learnt and help encourage its
implementation in their job
role, and perhaps even for the
team and/or organisation.
Sending your
employees away
on training courses
is easily done, but
following up on
what was learnt is
the challenge and
where the value is
gained.
Ensure that you have organised
monthly follow up meetings
to manage the change, so
you know they are still on the
right track.
And make sure you have
an effective individual performance
plan in place, which
also aligns with the individual’s
personal and career goals,
and also their outlined KPIs
Training and development
is not always linked to an
increase in remuneration.
While it is often a motivating
factor, it is not the only
motivation people seek – recognition
of a job well done
and positive feedback is often
more of a motivational factor
than money alone.
It’s also a great confidence
builder. And remember that
throughout the process you
should continue to give your
employees feedback and guidance,
to ensure that they are
developing positively, in line
with the businesses strategic
goals.
Having effective training
and development in place aids
in ensuring a profitable organisation
through employee satisfaction,
employee intelligence
and many other quantifiable
measures.
The long-term benefits are
huge. For example, identifying
talent early can be a strategic
advantage in your planning
to fill more technical, hard to
source roles.
And remember that training
does not need to be expensive
or outsourced - it can be done
inhouse using the capacity you
have within your team.
Both individual, one-onone
training, and teamwork
exercises can both work really
well if they are aligned to your
required outcomes.
20 BAY OF PLENTY BUSINESS NEWS November/December 2017
Remember it’s your money, take charge
Every year, the Financial Markets Authority reviews the
KiwiSaver market and releases an annual report based on
information collected from all KiwiSaver providers. It makes
for an interesting read, highlighting some key areas for
consideration.
WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR MONEY
> BY BRETT BELL-BOOTH
Investment Advisor with Forsyth Barr Limited in Tauranga.
Phone: (07) 577 5725 or email brett.bell-booth@forsythbarr.co.nz
With more than 2.7
million of us now in
KiwiSaver and total
funds saved in excess of $40
billion, KiwiSaver has firmly
established itself as a key part
of New Zealand’s retirement
savings framework. Anyone
who has taken this step
towards their retirement planning
should be congratulated.
With 25 retail schemes to
choose from, investors have
a range of options open to
them. Last year saw nearly
$2 billion transferred between
schemes by more than 172,000
KiwiSaver members.
The report highlights the
importance of education and
engagement with members.
With balances increasing, for
many, KiwiSaver may be their
most significant asset outside
of the family home.
While it may not be the
preferred dinnertime conversation,
it is worth investing
some time into thinking about
how much you are saving and
projecting forward to what that
will mean by the time you
reach retirement.
If you are considering your current
investment arrangements, perhaps
it’s time to get a complimentary review
Many providers include
a savings calculator on their
website, allowing you to input
information such as your salary
and retirement age. Ideally
you can also include information
about other assets you
may have invested and allow
for withdrawals you may wish
to make, perhaps for overseas
travel or replacing the
car in early retirement years.
Tracking your balance every
payday against this calculated
goal allows you to view and
monitor your progress.
Progress will be influenced
not only by the contributions
you make, but also by changes
in financial markets. While
we have enjoyed a period of
strong investment performance
post the Global Financial
Crisis, it is always important
to remember that KiwiSaver is
a long-term investment and as
such your KiwiSaver should be
positioned according to your
age and investment risk profile.
KiwiSaver providers normally
have an investment risk
profile tool which allows you
to answer some simple questions,
helping you to determine
where to invest. Your authorised
financial adviser can also
help you talk through your
investment choices.
Regular contact is important
too. While we have enjoyed
a period of synchronised economic
growth, corrections do
occur. Active fund managers
position themselves accordingly,
communicating changes in
investment strategy to members
so they can remain informed
about their account and make
active choices. Think about the
last time your provider contacted
you and helped you navigate
investment markets in relation
to your account. When it’s your
money, such engagement is
important.
Trans-Tasman transfers were
also covered in the report. Kiwis
who have worked in Australia
since 1992 and who have subsequently
moved back to New
Zealand, have been able to bring
back their Australian superannuation.
Last year, more than
$116 million moved across the
Tasman and was invested in
KiwiSaver accounts, giving balances
a boost.
For some, knowing they
will never return to Australia to
work, consolidating their retirement
arrangements into one
account is convenient and easy.
For others, fees may be a consideration
with multiple account
fees and potentially insurance
premiums in play. Insurance
may be duplicated with policies
held in New Zealand and
there may be restrictions around
access to benefits that the member
had not realised. Tax is also
a consideration and, as always,
specialist advice is recommended
in this area so an informed
decision about your situation
can be made.
Remember once the funds
have been transferred to your
KiwiSaver account, they are
ring-fenced and have special
rules restricting access. You
can’t use them for first home
withdrawals, but generally you
have access to them once you
meet the Australian definition
of retired, at age 60.
Once you have decided
to move your superannuation
home to KiwiSaver, be
prepared to be patient. It can
take time. The key is keeping
informed on the way through,
so talk to your authorised
financial adviser about how
they can help you with the
transfer process and liaise with
your Australian provider.
This column is general in
nature and is not personalised
investment advice. Disclosure
statements for Forsyth Barr
Authorised Financial Advisers
are available on request and
free of charge.

The importance of creating
a core differentiator
Clearly defining what sets you apart from every other business
that offers the same service or sells the same product as you is
a huge advantage when in business.
MONEY MATTERS
> BY MICHELLE HILL
Director and Partner at BDO Rotorua, Chartered Accountants
and Advisers. To find out more visit bdorotorua.co.nz or email
rotorua@bdo.co.nz
It is important to establish
what is known as core differentiators,
which articulate
exactly why you are unique
and why potential customers
should buy from you.
If you do not let your customers
and potential customers
know what sets you apart from
the rest, then buying decisions
will be made on other factors
such as price.
In order to identify the
unique identifiers in your business
you need to ask yourself,
“why do people buy from
me”? Ask your staff and associates
and get them to write a
list of all the reasons.
It is also a good idea to survey
some of your current “A”
customers. Asking customers
can be useful as your perception
of why they buy from you
can be quite different from the
reasons they actually do.
Once you have established
a list of what makes your business
different, ask yourself if
these also apply to competitors.
If so, be sure to cross
them off the list. The items that
remain are what makes your
business genuinely unique.
If you are having difficulty
establishing what sets you
apart from your competitors,
you may want to think about
what you can change or do to
make what you are doing better
than the competitor, from
the customer’s point of view.
Those businesses that know
why they are in business and
what makes them unique
tend to outlast many of their
competitors.
Once you have identified
what makes you unique be
sure to make it part of your
marketing strategy and promote
it everywhere.
Those businesses
that know why they
are in business
and what makes
them unique tend
to outlast many of
their competitors.
A well-formed Unique Core
Differentiator (UCD) targets
the hot buttons, and addresses
the real buying concerns, or
key frustrations for your clients
and potential clients.
In one statement or several,
it tells potential clients exactly
why they should buy from
your business and reminds current
clients why they continue
to deal with your business.
Built to Last: Successful
Habits of Visionary Companies,
co-written by Jim Collins and
Jerry Porras, makes the point
that the differences between
directly competitive companies
– the ones that outlast,
outperform and run the competition
– by an average of 19
times, is due to UCDs.
Built to last companies have
a central core that is the basis
upon which all business decisions
are made. Once you have a
UCD, when faced with a judgement
decision you can go back
to the core to find the answer.
This allows you to build consistency
of purpose and focus.
WESTPAC TAURANGA BUSINESS AWARDS
BAY OF PLENTY BUSINESS NEWS November/December 2017 23
Accolades for inspiring
Bay of Plenty businesses
This year’s Westpac Tauranga Business Awards reaffirmed
the strength of the city’s business community. The companies
featured on our cover - 1st Call Recruitment, which took out
the top award, and Tui Products, which won the corporate
leadership award - are among the many companies that have
expanded nationwide from a base in Bay of Plenty.
By DAVID PORTER
Stan Gregec, chief executive
of Tauranga
Chamber of Commerce,
which organises the awards,
noted during his remarks that
more than 1000 new businesses
had been set up in the Bay
over the past year.
“The Westpac Tauranga
Business Awards are a key way
to celebrate and recognise the
huge contribution that business
make to this region,” said
Gregec.
Every year the judges speak
of how positively they view
the experience of visiting some
of the dynamic and innovative
organisations operating in the
region, and of the pleasure and
sense of privilege, they take
from engaging with people
who are passionate about their
businesses.
1st Call Recruitment
not only led the field of 13
winners, but also won the
Vodafone Embracing Digital
Technology Award, and was
highly commended in the ACC
Workplace Safety Award.
The company began with
one branch in Tauranga four
years ago, and now has five
branches nationally, managing
between 1200 -1800
placements daily. The judges
described the company’s
growth as extraordinary for
an industry that has increasing
legislation and compliance
requirements.
1st Call Recruitment’s technology
solutions have minimised
the need for entering
multiple entries of the same
information, satisfied client
requirements for efficient
labour placement and ensured
health and safety requirements
are met, the judges said, adding
that their digital innovation
had the potential opportunity
to disrupt the recruitment
market.
General manager Angela
Singleton said the win was a
real honour and formal recognition
for the years of hard
work and dedication.
“It’s a reward for the efforts
my team has put into their
roles as recruiters and taking
on the largest players in the
recruitment market,” she said.
“The Bay is where we
commenced business 11 years
ago and is where we have
continued to base our head
office. Living and working in
one of the best spots in New
Zealand is a great draw card
and we are firmly planted in
the region. The Bay continues
to grow, as do we, and we are
fully committed to staying the
biggest recruitment service in
the region.”
Tui Products, headquartered
in Tauranga with branches
in the South Island and
Palmerston North, and a
new initiative in Kawarau,
is privately owned and
employs more than 80 people.
Tui Products was Westpac
Business of the Year in 2012
and exhibited all the hallmarks
of the excellent business that is
now more than contributing to
the local economy, the judges
said.
“It was an absolute honour
to receive the Corporate
Leadership award,” said Tui
Products chief executive Glen
years, and in that time we’ve
local businesses and suppliers.
People are at the heart of Tui,
and the opportunity to live and
both the Bay of Plenty Business
News Sustainable Business
Practices Award, as well as
the Gartshore Retail Interiors
“The store concept is well
executed, including exclusively
sourced local product which
consistently entices repeat
business, with product to cover
all ages and demographics,”
the judges said.
The Sustainable Business
Practices Award also saw a
highly commended citation go
to the Young Innovator Awards
(YIA) coordinated by Priority
One. “This educational programme
is world leading in
educating students in innovation
and design thinking,” said
the judges.
Priority One chief executive
Nigel Tutt said it was great
to see the YIA recognised.
“The have served to inspire
future generations to become
creative innovators, making a
huge impact in the local community.
YIA is a team effort
and we’d like to thank our
many supporters and sponsors.”
Property Managers
Group picked up the Zespri
International Business
they had not only innovated
through their core offering of
in a joint venture tech startup
called Forsite, developing
a simple solution for realtime
contractor management
for safety and compliance in
the property industry.
“This culture of technology-driven
innovation highlights
the difference between
a company that ‘does’ innovation
versus a company that
has ingrained innovation in its
vision and values as a successful
business,” the judges said.
The Tauranga City Council
City Events team won the
ACC Workplace Safety Award,
buses to transport the students
to the school.
The company still operates
CONFERENCE EVENTS AND VENUES
Coopers makes meetings easy
Meetings, conferences, and events of
all shapes are made easy at Coopers
Function Centre at Mystery Creek.
Under the new management
of Sonya
and Darryl Anderson,
Coopers was re-opened for
business earlier this year, and
is a welcome re-addition to the
conference venue offering in
the region.
When the Andersons set
about planning the future of
this stunning Waikato venue, a
top priority quickly emerged -
to make meetings, conference
and events easy.
“Communication is key,”
says Sonya Anderson.
“It’s about listening to
our clients, being responsive,
offering solutions, checking
in, and delivering on what we
promise.”
Coopers’ clients are kept
well informed every step of the
way from the initial inquiry,
through the quoting process,
event planning, and final event
delivery. A simple meeting of
10 people is afforded the same
level of care as a conference
for 150 guests.
The Coopers’ team recognise
that often the person who
has arranged the conference or
meeting is back in the office
on the day of the event. To
ensure their peace of mind
that everything is going well,
Sonya or one of the team will
send a quick email to say that
guests have arrived, are settled
in and the event is underway.
With an expansive back-
ground in event management
and marketing, including managing
a “glamping” conference
for more than 400 corporates,
stencilling a company logo on
sheep for a rural conference,
and coordinating a wedding
for 800 guests, Sonya is a passionate
advocate of the philosophy
that anything is possible.
That same “yes we can”
attitude is shared by Coopers’
preferred caterer Wildtribe
Catering. Owned and managed
by former Domaine restaurateur
Jeff Dunstan, the
Wildtribe team has fitted right
in with Coopers’ clients.
“We really enjoy seeing the
food presented by Wildtribe go
out to our clients,” said Darryl
Anderson.
Coopers’ clients
are kept well
informed every step
of the way from
the initial inquiry,
through the quoting
process, event
planning, and final
event delivery.
“Everything they do is with
passion and flair and we love
the fact they make everything
from scratch.”
As a venue, Coopers is easy
to like. It has a contemporary
venue vibe complemented by
distinctive Kiwi countryside
ambience and Waikato River
views.
Stepping through the
wooden entrance doors into a
warm and inviting foyer area,
Coopers’ guests are instantly
taken by the fantastic rural
backdrop, which is beautifully
captured by floor to ceiling
windows in the main function
area.
The main function room
can be divided into two meet-
ing spaces and the large covered
deck area with stunning
views provides a beautiful outdoor
alternative for morning
and afternoon tea breaks, lunch
or pre-dinner drinks.
Designed with quality in
mind, Coopers has the versatility
to host a wide range of event
options and is the perfect setting
for meetings, team building
events, board meetings,
presentations, product launches,
conferences, gala dinners,
and everything in between.
With the bonus of complimentary
parking and an abundance
of beautifully maintained
lawn and garden areas,
there are great options to host
outdoor break-out sessions and
activities.
“Coopers ticks all the boxes
and is an easy venue choice to
make. We are looking forward
to the New Year and hosting
a wide range of events in our
special venue.”
Impressive EVENTS
Impressive LOCATION
A multi-functional event space featuring the latest technology, natural light, and stunning views.
Coopers makes the perfect conference, meeting or team building destination, and effortlessly
transforms into a sophisticated venue for gala dinners and corporate celebrations.
BAY OF PLENTY BUSINESS BAY OF NEWS PLENTY November/December BUSINESS NEWS 2017 31 X
Trust. Or Bust: The steps to take now to avoid costly
mistakes made by unwitting and inactive trustees
It’s claimed New Zealanders have one of the highest number
of trusts per head of capita in the world. While this may not be
surprising, what is, is the number of trustees who have little to
no understanding of what is required of them.
A
trust’s asset protection
abilities will only be as
good as the quality of
time and effort that is spent to
set it up and administer it.
Trusts that are managed by
the original asset owner (the
settlor) alone and as if the
assets were still their own, may
find their trust busted open by
a court allowing creditors (or
an ex-spouse) to attack the
hard earned assets held within.
Even if the settlor acts as
one of the trustees, they must
look to their co-trustees to ask
for the simplest of things: such
as receiving funds, or that they
sell their current home and buy
a new one.
The days of the “rubber
stamp” independent trustee are
gone, as has been discovered
by some to their embarrassment
and expense.
The fact that settlors no
longer have ownership or control
over their settled assets is
the greatest area of concern for
potential and existing settlors.
Choosing the right trustees
who understand the settlor’s
intentions for setting up the
trust, and their wishes as to
how the beneficiaries of the
trust are to benefit, requires
careful consideration.
While the use of an inde-
pendent trustee is not a legal
requirement, one who has the
skill and ability to carry out
the legal requirements of trust
administration will be an asset
to the trust structure.
Trustee performance should
be monitored on an annual
basis for a variety of reasons.
One such reason is to avoid
obtaining costly court orders
when an incapacitated trustee
loses mental capacity and their
appointed (Enduring Power
of) Attorney is not legally
authorised to sign the papers
required to remove them from
their position.
The days of the
“rubber stamp”
independent trustee
are gone, as has
been discovered
by some to their
embarrassment and
expense.
As trusts mature in New
Zealand, this problem has
become more common.
Because trusts can exist
for up to 80 years (increasing
to 125 years when the new
Trust Act is enacted), trustees
should be regularly and actively
reviewing all aspects of the
trust, including:
- considering whether the
original purposes for which
it was set up are still relevant;
- the different roles in a
trust, such as appointors,
trustees and beneficiaries
and how and when these
roles will be passed to the
next generation
- the assets and future needs
of the beneficiaries
- the impact of changing
laws and
- the reporting obligations,
both domestic and foreign.
Harris Tate can help with
all aspects in relation to trust
establishment and structuring,
the provision of independent
trust services, trustee administration
that focus on the impact a trust
