The police then took Esa and Yasmin to the Taluk PS, where there were no female officers. The police
brought Esa and Yasmin to the PI’s room and made them sit on the floor. PI Balakrishnan sat in a chair, said
that Esa had spoilt his night’s sleep, and asked Esa to say where he was keeping Usha’s jewels. Then the
PI, still sitting down, beat Esa with a long wooden pole. Esa cried that he had done nothing wrong and asked
the PI to stop beating him. The PI told Yasmin to get an answer from Esa. The PI beat Esa with the wooden
pole again, still questioning him; the beating continued for more than half an hour, and the PI threatened to beat
Esa to death. When Esa made to stand up, the PI said that he would kill Esa if he tried to stand. Unable to
endure the pain, Esa said that he had given the jewels to one Sakthivel at Virinchipuram. Then the PI asked
Esa about a silver spoon. When Esa said that he did not know anything about it, the PI beat him again.
At around 5.15am, the PI made Esa strip down to his underwear instructed some PCs to tie Esa’s hands.
The HC made Esa sit down on the floor and tied his arms and legs. Then the PCs pushed lathis through his
tied arms and legs and hung Esa on them between two tables. The PI beat Esa on the soles of his feet and
on his fingers, meanwhile insulting him for looking like he was riding a dolly. When Esa asked for water, the
PI told him to drink Yasmin’s urine. The PI asked again where Esa had hidden the jewels, to which Esa
replied that he had given them to the blacksmith. The PI left the room.
At 5.30pm, the PI returned, told Esa that he had been lying, and beat him until 8.00pm.
At 8.00pm, the PI beat Yasmin’s palms with a lathi.
The SI left to take a bath, and the police gave Esa and Yasmin tiffin to eat. Esa and Yasmin were detained at
the station.
On 11 June 2007 at around 10.00am, the PI returned. He beat Yasmin with a chain before taking Esa into a
separate room and beating him. Meanwhile, a PC insulted Yasmin.
After some time, the PI came back outside and told Yasmin that Esa was now saying that he had given the
jewels to Yasmin’s mother and sister. The PI hit Yasmin with a belt. Yasmin said that her sister worked in a
shoe company and earned Rs. 2,000 per month, so she could buy her own jewels.
At 4.00pm, the police took Esa and Yasmin home, where they asked Yasmin’s mother if either Esa or
Yasmin had given her any jewels. Yasmin’s mother said that she knew nothing about any jewels.
The police took Esa, Yasmin, and Yasmin’s mother to the Taluk PS. There, they stripped Esa naked in front
of Yasmin and her mother and began to beat him. The police threatened to shoot Esa in the knee and to
circumcise him, and then asked him if he was a bastard.
A PC arrived and murmured something to the PI. Immediately, the PI ordered the PCs to untie Esa and to
give him his clothes back. The PCs took Esa to the bathroom, washed his face, cleaned him with a towel,
and made him sit in a chair. The police collected signatures from Yasmin and her mother. The police then
let Esa, Yasmin, and Yasmin’s mother leave.
Later, the three went with Kamarudeen to the Adukkampaarai Government Hospital, where Esa was admitted
for treatment.
After three days, Esa was discharged from the Hospital.
