At around 2.00am, while Narayan and Thangarasu were sleeping, police officers arrived and took them to the
town police station, accusing them of having stolen a golden ornament.
At the station, the police interrogated Narayan and Thangarasu and told them to produce the ornament.
Narayan and Thangarasu said that they knew nothing about the case. Five officers, including Vijayan,
proceeded to beat them.
At around 4.00pm, the police also brought Muthu to the station. They locked him in a room, bent his fingers,
and banged his legs against the wall.
On 11 September 2007, the police brought Narayan and Thangarasu to the Kariyapatti PS and filed a case
against them. The police then took Narayan and Thangarasu to the Virudhunagar Court, from where they were
remanded to Madurai Central Jail.
On 12 October 2007, Narayan and Thangarasu were released on bail.

Case Details:
Victim Nisham, a Muslim, resides at R/O 204, opposite the Muslim Arts College, Thiruvidhangodu 629 174. On
11 October 2007 at around 7.30pm, one of Nisham’s relatives in Kulachal telephoned him and asked for
assistance at his shop. Nisham went with his neighbour, Bagarutheen, to the shop.
When Nisham was about one kilometre from Kulachal, at the VKP junction, four unnamed PCs from the
Kulachal PS were checking vehicles. The Constbales stopped Nisham’s vehicle. One PC approached
Nisham and struck him with a baton on his back. Nisham fell unconscious, and scraped the skin on his face;
Nisham began to bleed. Bagarutheen swabbed Nisham’s injury with a cloth.
The PC who had struck Nisham got him some water. Nisham regained consciousness.
