Kathiaravan was kept in custody for several days illegally.<br />

General Secretary H. Raja demanded severe action against the investigating officers and<br />

said the police could not keep a person in police custody for more than 24 hours.<br />

The staff of People’s Watch Tamil Nadu (PWTN) had been active in public hearings<br />

conducted by the National Commission for Women and the State Commission for Women<br />

in Virudhunagar, Madurai on 27-28 October 2003. They had assisted in deposing numerous<br />

victims of police excesses.<br />

On 5 November 2003 in the early morning, the police raided the offices of PWTN, allegedly<br />

searching for the accused in a criminal case registered at M. Pudupatti PS, Sivakasi Taluk.<br />

The Tamil Nadu Assembly sentenced the Executive Editor of The Hindu, Malini<br />

Parthasarathy, as well as its Publisher and Editor and two senior journalists, to fifteen days’<br />

imprisonment for breach of privilege. The Assembly also sentenced S. Selvam, Editor of<br />

Murasoli, the DMK Party newspaper, on the same count.<br />

About thirty minutes after the Assembly passed its order, police jeeps carrying about two<br />

dozen policemen, some of them in riot gear, arrived at the head office of The Hindu in<br />

Chennai.<br />
