EDITOR’s note
It is hard to believe that 2017 is coming to a close. I hope you
readers got some holiday time this year even if its just a short
trip. Personally, my passport got stamped too many times to
count in 2017 and I’ve learned to embrace the outdoor through
all the hikes I went to this year. I already have a bunch of ideas
for 2018 which I look forward to exploring, writing and sharing
with you lot.
So our last issue of the year has some Christmas-related
articles where we found some of the best festive feasts for you
to enjoy around Asia. That delicious spread is on page 32.
Plus the end of the year would not be complete without
a New Year destination. We are recommending the crowned
luxury island of Langkawi where people go on sunset cruises
and hike deep into the forest that is most probably tinge with
some myth or legend. See the beachside pictures on page 18.
May you enjoy the last bits of 2017 and take the time to
reflect on everything that happened this past year. Whether
you follow that 2017 resolution or not, I’m a firm believer in
personal growth. If you see even a little bit of that, then that
should be good enough.
Before I end, I hope you enjoy our Christmas wrapping
paper that you can customise by colouring it in. It’s great for
your kids to bring forth their inner Picasso! Plus if you are
travelling with AirAsia, we hope you utilise the voucher when
shopping on board.
Till we meet again in 2018. Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year! #holidaymodeon
Now Boarding
Do you remember your first trip aboard without your parents?
How was it like and what was the occasion?
My first trip abroad without my parents was to Bodrum, Turkey.
I was only 15 years old and went with a bunch of friends. It was
a great experience since it was the first time I stepped outside of
the UK. I was amazed with the local architecture and landscape.
I wasn't very adventurous with the local cuisine and remember
going all over town to find a McDonalds. There was no such
thing as GPS and smart phones back then.
If you could only listen to one musical genre, what would it be?
Wow, this is a hard one. I think it would have to be genre of good
music, LOL. No, I'd probably go with House Music!
Where is a place that you have visited that you would highly
recommend people to go?
I think it should be on everyone's bucket list to go Boracay,
Philippines. The white sand beach with crystal blue sea is perfect
for anyone who loves spending time soaking up sun. I had a
great experience with Patricia and some friends. I would highly
suggest staying at Discovery Shore.
Could you travel around without access to social media?
In today's world that seems hard to do. But yes, I think it
would be a holiday in itself to not have any digital devices and
connectivity. I remember the days we didn't have any social
media, so yes, I could do that no problem. I would spam up my
feed with photos after I returned from my trip though.
How did music came into your life and how did it become part
of your career as a DJ?
It came organically. It’s just something I was exposed to at a
young age and decided I wanted to work within music and
entertainment. It’s been a long journey since I started to DJ and
I'm just happy I get to do what I love.
Are you a meticulous travel planner or the spontaneous kind?
I would say I am somewhere between both. Sometimes it’s
important to plan ahead and to prepare, but then again, it’s also
nice to wake up in the morning and think, “Hey I want to go to a
beach tomorrow”, book a flight and go!
Who is your dream person to collaborate with to create music?
I'd love work with anyone who share the same passion for
music as I do.
How has travelling changed since you started a family?
It has changed by an additional 3 hours of preparing, packing
and moving around with a baby. To be honest, it hasn't changed
much other than we have an extra person with us and need to
allow more time to prepare before traveling. It's a pleasure to be
able to go away as a family.
Any upcoming gigs or collaborations we can expect towards
the end of the year?
Yes, currently doing a massive collaboration with 6 other artists
from various fields in music, dance and performance to create
a club showcase like no other. The event is call Chivas presents
ETM (Electronic Theatre Music) and we are currently touring.
Checkout Chivas Facebook page for more information.
What can we expect with your show ‘Turn It Up’ on AFO Radio?
Expect a great selection of underground club music, interviews
and guest mixes from international and local DJs. Head over to
Luxury Langkawi
This northern island of West Malaysia returned
to my periphery after many encounters with
European tourists that gushed over the appeal
and serenity of this coastal gem. I remembered
Langkawi as a childhood playground thanks to my
grandparent’s affinity for its beaches and island
hospitality. 16 years since I visited, I have heard stories
of Langkawi’s glorious New Years celebration and a
recent revamp to turn this lazy seaside town into a
luxury escape.
Introduction To Luxury
It began when Datai Beach began to gain traction as
the getaway hideout for celebrities that crave for some
privacy. Then wealthy golfers started flying in when The
Els Club Teluk Datai received a complete fancy overhaul
that nabbed them the ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’
at the inaugural World Golf Awards. Before you know it,
the Four Seasons, St. Regis and the latest Ritz Carlton
opened its doors on the shores of Langkawi.
Affluent Activities
Driving around Langkawi (it's the best way to get
around) you will notice several marinas and ports like
the one near the main town of Kuah or the secluded
marina near Kok Beach are parked with immaculate
yachts of all sizes. If one does not own a yacht (at least
not yet), the cruises at Langkawi are a favourite activity
among locals and tourists.
I disembarked on a lovely catamaran manned with
an amicable staff serving delectable grilled dishes and
a continuous flow of alcohol to catch the mesmerising
Langkawi sunset.
The Crystal Yacht Holiday company offers such
sunset cruise package on top of others like their
geopark day cruise. This roughly 3-hour sail offers
activities like a ‘floating jacuzzi where one can sit on a
net at the back of the vessel and feel the water from
the propellers emulate a jacuzzi setting.
Exploring Nature
Waterfalls are a majestic part of Mother Nature and
Langkawi is no short of it. Though some are harder to
reach than others, I tested out my body for a 30-minute
hike up to the legendary Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls or
Seven Wells Waterfall. The name refers to the seven
pools that are formed from seven different waterfalls of
Mount Mat Cincang.
It is roughly a 35-minute drive on the snaking road
up Mount Mat Cincang from Cenang Beach to the
carpark of Telaga Tujuh. Food stalls and convenient
stores near the carpark will help prepare for your
ascend up the 700 steps to reach the top. But do not
fret as the cooling cascading water and breathtaking
view will make it all worthwhile.
the beauty of the island.
Where you stay really depends on what you are looking
for as Langkawi comes in a range of options scattered in
key locations on the island.
Main town Kuah is home to St Regis with views
overlooking the harbour. Cenang Beach on the Western
shores is the heart of the tourist action with homestays
and mid-range accommodations aplenty next to 5-Star
havens like Meritus Pelangi Resort were the hospitality is
top notch. The north side is home to the secluded cape of
Tanjung Rhu near small mountainous islands and a stretch
of beach with accommodations like Tanjung Rhu Resort.
I prefer the less crowded beaches so Tanjung Rhu was
a natural choice. Hot off the heels of a major renovation,
I opted to stay at the newly refurbished Tanjung Rhu
Resort after hearing whispers of a pool so decadent.
The first impression on the rooms sees me in awe of their
huge bathroom attached to a vanity room with floor to
ceiling mirrors. As a woman who enjoys her makeup, this
was a nice touch that I had not seen in other resorts.
And the pool? Well, it did not disappoint. The adult
pool called The Sands is designed to maximize the view of
the beach with tile work that mirrors the shades of blue
of the sea. I definitely received the privacy and seclusion
that I yearned in this resort.
Swirling Street
Style
Final
Look

On damp hair, I scrunch in
some volumnising cream
onto the ends of my hair in an
upwards motion. This will make
my waves more defined and
shiny after drying.

I attached the diffuser to the
hair dryer and with the device
off, I first cup a section of my
hair from the bottom and then
turn on the hair dryer. I leave the
diffuser there for 3-5 seconds
before cupping another section
of my hair and doing the same.

I use the lowest setting for
airflow and heat to avoid frizz.
For layered curls, on the top of
my head, I make sure to bring the
diffuser all the way till the teeth
touch my scalp for extra volume.
Many people have the knowledge of using a hairdryer but do
you know how to utilise the genius of a diffuser? Especially
for ladies with wavy or curly hair, the diffuser should be your
best friend as it allows you to dry your hair quickly without jeopardising
the bounce of your curls. Thankfully the Panasonic 2500W High Power
Ionity Hair Dryer comes with a diffuser and I will show you how I use it
for this street inspired half bun.

Sectioning off half my hair, I
secure it into a half do. I then
twist the dangling hair and wrap
it around my ponytail. Bobby
pins are used to secure the bun
and I end with some hairspray to
lock everything down.
Traditional
Games
WORDS & PHOTOS BY
FRANCIS YIP
THE SURVIVING TRUTH
Have you ever played
“Ketingting” and “Batu
Seremban” before? If no,
you may be a millennial or born
in the internet era playing video
games instead of these loved
traditional games.
For myself, I grew up in the 70s
and played these games before.
The only electronic game I played
back then was the Nintendo’s
Game and Watch series featuring
Popeye and Olive Oyl. No iPad. No
tablet or PC. No online games.
But times have changed. Look
at the countless digital games
available today. Hence, it is no
surprise the young generation have
missed the fun of playing some of
these traditional ones:
WAU FLYING
Wau means kite in the Malay
language. This traditional game is
particularly popular in the states
of Kedah, Perlis and Kelantan
especially after the harvest of
paddy. There are competitions of
wau flying to see which wau is
the most beautiful and can fly the
highest. The famous Wau Bulan
comes in the shape of the crescent
at the tail. Today, wau flying
continues to be a popular pastime
in the rural areas.
SEPAK TAKRAW
Sepak takraw is undeniably one
of the most popular traditional
games. In fact, it is also played as
a medal sport in the Asian Games
and SEA Games. The ball is made
from rattan and has even become
a souvenir item for tourists who
treasure Malaysian handicrafts.
38 · WWW.GOASIAPLUS.COM
KETINGTING
Ketingting or Teng Teng is known
as airplane jumping. This is a
localized hopscotch game and
my top outdoor game. The game
uses a chalk-drawing diagramme
of squares from one to nine. Each
player will kick off by throwing a
stone at square one and he must
hop with one leg onto each square
until number nine and back. On
his way back, he must retrieve the
stone, all while staying in balance.
TIKAM-TIKAM
Kids love prizes. Tikam-tikam is a
game of chance which uses a big
board displaying a stack of mini ang
pow packets carrying the winning
prizes which include toys and junk
foods. As a kid, I secretly visited
the sundry shop to play this game
which costed only five cents per
pack. Come to think of it, although
the game is exciting, I should have
saved all my money in the piggy
bank instead.
CONGKAK
This is a mancala game and is often
considered as the game for girls.
The word “congkak” is believed to
originate from the old Malay word
“congak” which means “mental
calculation”. It involves two players
dropping marbles or red saga onto
the holes of the congkak board,
making sure one does not end on
an empty one.
LOMPAT GETAH
This game only uses rubber bands
to form the skipping rope. The
male players will try to outshine
one another to see who can jump
the highest. However, the girls can
choose to jump the rope and are
allowed to touch the rope.
BATU SEREMBAN
Known as five stones, this game
involves throwing and catching
a set of five pebbles, one or a
few pieces at a time. The game
becomes more complicated as
the player advances through the
stages. There is another option
called seven stones or batu tujuh.
There are many other traditional
games. While the internet and
video games are more popular
today, there is nothing more
precious than the memories of
playing these traditional games.
After all, old is gold.
