Prize giving at Sacred Heart School
The prizegiving was a great success, although not
without a few mishaps but that is the wonderful
thing about this school everyone just rises to
challenges. Someone fainted during the choir’s
‘Peace Song,’ but they were soon back in the swing
of their moving piece. Our Head Girl was not well
just before delivering her meaningful speech but her
Deputy calmly took over. Congratulations to both
Aurelia and Emily over such a smooth transition.
Dame Stella Rimington gave a very moving speech
reflecting on the difficulties of being a woman in a
man’s world and how we take so much for granted
nowadays. She battled from 16 to move out of
societies’ image of a woman who should only be at
home with her children, and later in her career, the
woman who was only allowed to do the secretarial
work – not the real job of being a spy. She signed
many of her books, her autobiography and her many
spy novels. She did comment that she had a really
interesting and entertaining evening.
Our prizegiving was not at all stuffy.
We congratulate all those who were awarded
trophies and hope that next year others will receive
them. It was good to see Year 12 and hear of their
successes. They were all smartly dressed and eager
to rekindle old friendships with staff, pupils and their
former peers. The Headteacher’s and Head Girl’s
thoughts will be posted on the website.
A special thank you to all the staff who made this a
very special evening.
Fight To Save Historic Village Pub
Beeston locals continue fight to save historic village
pub from redevelopment.
Over half the cash needed to buy The Ploughshare
has now been secured, with a new fundraising drive
planned for 2018.
Campaigners in mid-Norfolk have been taking stock of
their achievements 18 months on from a unanimous
resolution to save Beeston’s last remaining pub, The
Ploughshare. More than £150,000 has now been
raised towards buying the building, which dates
back to 1620, and re-opening the pub which closed
its doors in early 2016.
The Ploughshare’s current owner is pursuing planning
permission to build three houses on the historic
village site. The latest application was rejected in
August, but the pub’s beer garden has already been
lost to housing. Campaigners have since acquired
Asset of Community Value status for the building
from Breckland Council, which puts restrictions on
further development.
A group of villagers have formed Beeston Community
Enterprises as the vehicle to raise money to buy the
pub and re-open it, along with a café, small shop and
other services for residents. Last year’s share offer,
where members of the public could buy a share of the
pub for as little as £50, raised over £70,000 and the
efforts of the management committee have secured
another £80,000 in funding from organisations
including the Plunkett Foundation.
Members at the group’s AGM in November made it
clear that support for the campaign is still strong and
another share offer will be launched in early spring
2018 to help raise the additional £150,000 required
to buy the pub.
Henry Dennett, chair of the management committee
said, “Village pubs offer a vital focus to rural village
life and this is the last opportunity to save ours
before it’s permanently lost. We’ve come a long way
in a short space of time, but there’s still more to do.
With the local community’s support, next year’s
fundraiser will be the final push which allows us to
buy and re-open the pub for the people of Beeston.”
Steve Hollis, management committee member, added
“This project is about bringing everyone together to
do something amazing for Beeston residents, current
and future. But, we can only succeed if local people
get involved by buying shares or helping out with the
campaign.”

Volunteers Needed For Befriending
Action for children’s norfolk independent visitor
service is looking for volunteers to befriend
young people in care to give them a chance to
learn how to build positive relationships.
Positive, young-at-heart role model volunteers
are needed to make a long term difference to
the lives of young people in care throughout
Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
Tracey Kean, of the charity’s Norfolk
Independent Visitor Service, said: “These
children have suffered abuse, neglect and often
both.
Our service helps give them the opportunity
to experience positive relationships which
hopefully will give them a chance to build a
positive life for themselves.
We usually help youngsters up to the age of 22
but sometimes these friendships can last a lot
longer. In the case of our most successful story
the young woman is now 33, with a child of
her own, and her volunteer, who was teamed
up with her when she was just 11, is still very
much in her life.
Many of these young people have
understandably learnt to mistrust adults and
life in general. The Independent Visitor Service
aims to give them back a sense of trust and also
learn how to have good relationships for life.
It can make a really big difference to their
lives.”
Volunteers might take them out for trips like
bowling, cinema, beach trips, dog walks and
meals and are strictly vetted with police checks
and a series of interviews.
• Volunteers must be over the age of 21.
• Age is not a barrier, the oldest volunteer is
currently a man in his 60s. It’s more important
to have a friendly, positive and youthful
outlook.
• Volunteers must commit to at least two
years.
• Volunteers must be reliable, stable and
committed.
•The minimum visiting commitment is once a
month.
