2017 - New Frontiers for Mackenzie & Ebert
The year saw some major new developments for the company geographically, coupled with the usual busy schedule
of projects in the UK and Europe.
Four visits were made to South America during the year to look at projects in Peru, Chile and Argentina.
Work commenced at Lima Golf Club by the end of the year to provide the Club with world class practice facilities.
It is expected that planning work at Los Leones in Chile and at Pilar, Martindale and CUBA in Argentina will come to
fruition with construction in 2018 and beyond.
Trump Turnberry, South Ayrshire, Scotland
The Ailsa Course continued to draw plaudits throughout 2017 following the award of No. 1 ranking in Golf Monthly’s
Top 100 courses in UK & Ireland in January. In the same month, the prestigious Golf Inc awards bestowed the Ailsa
with the title of ‘Redevelopment of the Year’, describing it as “an iconic property that has been restored immaculately
without losing the proud history created over hundreds of years.’ All Square, the social media platform for golfers,
ranked Trump Turnberry Resort as the greatest golf course in the world.
The King Robert The Bruce was opened in July by Eric Trump, in the company of King Robert himself! The holes at the
far end of the course are the equal of the coastal holes of the Ailsa Course in terms of their setting and challenge. At
the end of the year, Golf Magazine named the course ‘Renovation of the Year’ and Square Mile announced that it had
gained their award of ‘Best New UK Course’.
The revised Dunluce Course, with its two new holes, opened for play on 23 rd June on Captain’s Day. The new par five
7 th and par four 8 th holes have blended in well and, as expected, are on schedule to be in tournament condition for
The Boys Championship in August 2018 and The Open the following July. The aforementioned Square Mile awards
bestowed the course with the title of ‘Best Course Renovation’ at the end of the year.
The Open Venues
As well as the major projects at Turnberry and Royal Portrush, input has also been provided to 5 of the other Open
venues. Advisory visits were made at Royal Troon, dune construction and bunker work implemented at Royal Lytham,
the adjustments to the 3 rd hole and Open practice facilities at Carnoustie were completed, a historic study was
produced for Royal Liverpool and, by the end of the year, plans for course adjustments and greatly improved practice
facilities for The Open in 2020 were finalised at Royal St. George’s.
Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society, Edinburgh, Scotland
The Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society is the fourth oldest club in the world and it has been at its current home on the
west side of Edinburgh since 1898. Originally designed by Willie Park Jr and then extensively redesigned by Dr Alister
MacKenzie in 1921, in past decades the course had not really kept pace with the modern game. The first phase of an
ambitious three phase plan was completed in 2017, with two completely new holes, three new greens and bunkers
re-sited and re-constructed on another 8 holes. Plans for Phase 2 have already been drawn up and work recommences
next summer with a further 8 holes being revised.
2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Royal Automobile Club - Old Course, Surrey, England
The remaining bunkers on the last six holes were completed in early 2017 and all holes came back into play in the late
spring, completing an express bunker reconstruction programme that only started in January 2016. The result is not
far from having a new course, only for a fraction of the cost and the disturbance.
This year’s work also included the wholesale reconstruction of the par three 13 th hole. The old hole had been heavily
altered since Herbert Fowler, the original architect, laid it out. Set at almost the highest point of the entire Woodcote
Park property, it was frustratingly blind, so the work focussed on making the green visible from the tee and rebuilding
the green which had been poorly rebuilt at some point previously. It has transformed the hole.
Trevose Golf and Country Club, Cornwall, England
Trevose’s iconic 4 th hole received a major overhaul in the winter of 2016 to 2017 and the hole re-opened in the
spring. Standing on the green, the glorious views behind are now in sight. 7 holes have now been extensively reworked
with the 14 th , 15 th and 16 th being tackled this winter. This year’s work includes bunkers, extensive green
surrounds work and the opening up of bare sand areas to rejuvenate habitat and add interest to these holes.
2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Princes, Kent, England
It is hard to think that Princes received just a passing mention in last year’s review, given all that has happened to the
Himalayas Nine during 2017. As usual, a historic report was produced as a first step, which revealed that when the
course was rebuilt after the 2 nd World War, the task was shared by two architects, but not from the same firm. Sir
Guy Campbell and John Morrison deserve huge credit for this outstanding 27 hole complex. The greens and
surrounds must rank amongst the finest in the links world. The 2017 project has involved maximising the potential of
the natural landform for the Himalayas Nine, including the restoration of old features such as the Himalayas bunkers
and an entirely new 5 th hole as well as other new hazards. By the end of the year, focus was turning to the Shore and
Dunes Nines with a Masterplan for both being the next step.
The New 5 th Hole
Burnham & Berrow, Somerset, England
Another great links with a superb set of par 3s. The short holes of a course often define its quality and they are
second to none at Burnham. The project for 2017 has been to reshape the par 4 6 th green to make it more inviting to
play to, while providing a suitable challenge at the same time . The Club have also added new tees on the highest
dune on the course for the 6 th which provide awe inspiring 360 degree views.

2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Royal Cinque Ports, Kent, England
Design work has recommenced at Royal Cinque Ports following a brief hiatus after a Masterplan and Historic Study
were completed. There are some interesting projects which have been identified by the current committee as worthy
of further consideration such as a new set of tees for the 3 rd hole, restoring some huge, old crater bunkers, the
creation of bare sand areas, the restoration of an old second route to play the wonderful 16 th hole and the
construction of a new short game area.
2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Other notable projects were:-
St Andrews – New & Eden Courses
Following on from the creation of bare sand areas on the New Course, the company was delighted to be invited to
provide a historical assessment for both the New and Eden Courses at St Andrews. Following on from that would be
the recommendation of proposals for both courses. In the meantime, work continued on the New Course to form
dunes to screen the views into the TV Compound for The Open to the left of the 15 th hole.
15 th Hole On The New Course
Royal Porthcawl, Mid Glamorgan, Wales
Porthcawl’s fine links hosted The Senior Open for a second time with a second win for the incredible Bernhard Langer.
Just prior to this, a Bunker Strategy Report was produced for the Club. The conclusions were to fill some, form various
new ones, restore the old large, rough edged bunkers which are apparent in the old plans and convert existing
revetted fairway bunkers to this same rough edged style. Work is already underway.

2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Portmarnock, Dublin, Ireland
Portmarnock will host The Amateur Championship in 2019. Work was well advanced by the end of the year on low
dune construction, practice facility improvements and the addition of some bunkers. The latter will tighten up the
course at the landing area of the elite players in The Amateur. The course was recently voted No.1 in the Top 100
Courses in Ireland by The Irish Golfer Magazine.
The Low Dunes Left Of The 2 nd Hole
The Island, Dublin, Ireland
The Island will share the qualifying rounds for The Amateur with Portmarnock in 2019. In preparation for this event
and for the benefit of the general membership, the 1 st tee area is being redesigned and reshaped and the fairway
bunkers converted to rough edged hazards. A long term Masterplan has also been presented to the Club.

2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Royal County Down, Newcastle, Northern Ireland
The work at Royal County Down to provide the Club with an excellent practice ground and to create dunes to the
right of the 17 th hole on the Championship Course was completed in early 2017. The dunes at the 17 th were intended
to divide it from the practice area but they have had the dual effect of improving the character of the hole. Once
again, the technique of lifting and relaying rough vegetation, called translocation, has proved itself in allowing
changes to look as though they have been in place forever. Initial discussions were held regarding the ongoing
maintenance of the iconic bunkers on the Championship Course towards the end of the year.
2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Royal Wimbledon, Surrey, England
Having recently celebrated its 150 th anniversary, Royal Wimbledon has embarked on a carefully planned programme
to restore its heathland, revamp its bunkers in keeping with its heritage, restoring green sizes, easing off severe
greens, adding forward tees and improving its path network. Phase One started in the spring with the completion of a
new Short Game Area close to the clubhouse and Phase Two followed this autumn with work to the 7 th to 10 th holes
being completed by Christmas. Heathland regeneration is a key part of the programme and acid turf is being stripped
from heather areas to use on bunker surrounds while allowing heather coverage to be extended.
2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Royal Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland
The revised 12 th hole opened for play this season and work has also started on the new 7 th hole which is going to
make full advantage of the majestic views that only the tee currently enjoys at present. The existing green design is to
be replicated for the revised hole which is an interesting challenge when the landform is slightly different. This is a big
step for the Club to take, but not only will it keep all that is good about the present hole and make the most of the
setting but it also frees room to restore the lost strategy on the 8 th hole with its two level fairway.
The View From Royal Dornoch’s Famous7 th Tee That Will Feature Along The Length Of The New Hole
Nairn, Inverness-shire, Scotland
An exciting new commission this year was to advise The Nairn Golf Club on future plans for the course. This process is
now underway, with the Historic Research Study complete and recommendations currently being drawn up. The aim
is to reinforce the challenge for elite players on this former Walker Cup and Curtis Cup venue, while making the
course a little friendlier for those who find the game hard enough already.

2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Saunton, North Devon, England
Saunton played the revamped West Course for the first time in 2017 before hosting the English Seniors Championship
in June. Around that time, a thorough Historic Research Study on Herbert Fowler’s East Course was undertaken
which highlighted the extra-ordinary impact which military activity during WW2 had on the course.
Later in the year, the Club commissioned a study to look at improving its practice facilities, in line with their clear goal
to have facilities capable of hosting top class national amateur events.
Golf At Goodwood, Sussex, England
Golf At Goodwood was delighted to bring all of their re-styled bunkers back into play in April. This two stage
programme reduced the number and size of bunkers on the Downs Course, making them much more visually
appealing and more relevant to the thinking of the better players, while also making life easier for the average player.
After the first season in play, scores are lower overall showing that this aspect has been achieved.
2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Effingham Golf Club, Surrey, England
After a rolling programme of bunker reconstruction which had already taken 3 years, Effingham took the bold step to
finish their final six holes this autumn. This involved 27 new or reshaped bunkers and the removal of 7. As highlighted
last year, the aim throughout has been to stay faithful to the design philosophy of Harry Colt who laid out the course
originally. The Club’s plans are to launch the completed work next May with a large pro-am event.
2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Oakmere Golf Club, Nottinghamshire, England
The ambitious upgrade programme at Oakmere continued in 2017 with new 7 th and 8 th greens and bunkers reworked
on five holes. Further work is scheduled for early 2018 that will see the Admiral’s Course complete, leaving the
creation of a new par three nine and fine-tuning of the Commander’s Course to be implemented in future years.
This continued heavy investment in the course is paying dividends with member numbers holding up well and visitor
rounds increasing in an area with plenty of competition.
2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Fulwell, Middlesex, England
Fulwell was originally laid out by Dr Alister MacKenzie but his work was largely lost during WW2. The current layout is
the handiwork of John Morrison, Harry Colt’s younger partner.
The members of the Club were keen to upgrade their bunkers and 2017 has seen the completion of the first three
phases with the final phase in autumn 2018. Overall bunker numbers are being reduced but their impact on the
appearance of the course and how the course plays is profound.
2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Fulford, York, England
In some ways, it is sad to report that the bunker reconstruction project at Fulford has now come to an end. The six
years of work has been very rewarding, taking this course, designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie’s brother Charles, back
towards its original design characteristics. It was discovered that the bunkers used to be far more intricate in shape
and the landscape more open, especially at the far end of the course away from the clubhouse. The project has
resulted in a return to the intricate bunkers of old but with a slightly more modern take and a restoration of the open
landscape and distant views in the heathland section of the course.
The 9 th Hole
Club de Golf Terramar, Sitges, Spain
The Club has continued to make good progress with the implementation of a masterplan for its course which has a
Tom Simpson layout at its roots. The beautiful 3 rd green set right beside the ocean opened in the summer.

2017 The 2016 Notable Review Projects
Minthis Hills, Cyprus
The Company has been working at Minthis Hills steadily since 2005 and it was exciting this year to build a new 11 th
hole which is the first stage of an expansion plan for the course to bring holes over to where there are lovely views
across to the Trudos Mountains.
The plan involves a new par 5 10 th hole which is to be built early in 2018 and the new par 3 11 th which was seeded
in August. The whole Minthis Hills Resort is going from strength to strength with dozens of properties sold and
already occupied.
Existing Course Projects In Iceland
Activity in Iceland continued in 2017, with new work being opened and further work on the drawing board.
Keilir
The new 13 th , which will become new 10 th when the layout of the back nine is altered, opened this summer. The
green is set in an old quarry and is a distinctive new addition to the course. A short par four, it has a long green with
multiple levels, so accurate approach shots will be needed to offer up birdie chances.
Existing Course Projects In Finland
The company’s long history of advising courses in Finland has continued in 2017.
Pickala
The 8 th & 9 th greens on the Seaside Course were constructed in 2017 and the new short game green was opened.
There will now be a concerted effort to complete the green reconstruction on the front nine over the next two years.
Vierumäki
By the end of the year, the only green left to rebuild on the Classic Course was at the 9 th hole. The 3 rd , 5 th and 17 th
greens were reconstructed during the year and the 2 nd and 14 th greens were opened for play. The last visit in
November was slightly thwarted by an earlier than expected fall of snow however!
Vantaa, Helsinki, Finland
Despite a very cold spring, the front nine was opened for play in June on this new course very close to Helsinki
Airport. Operated as a green fee facility, it was immediately busy with Helsinki’s golfers. The course is being built in
two phases with the back nine being the focus for completion in 2018 following a major landfill operation.
Club de Golf Terramar, Sitges, Spain
The original nine hole course at Terramar, just south of Barcelona, was designed by Tom Simpson in 1927. The
Masterplan, produced some years ago, uses neighbouring land for two new holes for a major reorganisation of the
back nine. A contractor has now been selected for the project and work will commence as soon as planning
permission is granted. The course hosted a Ladies European Tour Event in April.
Noordwijkse, Holland
The new Green Committee has been working hard to assess the requirements for this great links course over the next
decade and beyond, given the likely pesticide restrictions which will come to bear within that period.
Two New Commissions In Northumberland
Masterplans have been commissioned for two renowned courses in Northumberland.
Bamburgh Castle
This legendary course occupies a very special part of the world. Bamburgh Castle Golf Club is often quoted as one of
the most scenic golf courses in Britain with incomparable views of Bugle Bay, Lindisfarne, the Farne Islands, the
Cheviots and, of course, Bamburgh Castle. A bunker reconstruction project will commence early in 2018.
The 4 th Green At Bamburgh
Northumberland
A full Masterplan was produced for Northumberland Golf Club. Sitting within Newcastle Racecourse with a few holes
requiring a tee shot over the track, the course is another which enjoys a special setting. The old aerial photographs
revealed many more bunkers which had more intricate shapes than those of today.

Other New Commissions In 2017
Masterplans have been commissioned at two further Clubs, illustrating that many Clubs are prepared to invest to
improve their golf offering for members and visitors alike.
Ilkley, Yorkshire, England
A delightful riverside course which bears the hallmark of none other than Dr Alister MacKenzie.
A Historic Research Study has been completed along with recommendations for the 4 th and 6 th holes.
Faced with disturbance as a result of a new water main crossing the course, the Club are creating an arrangement
that allows their third hole to be split to allow top quality golf to be played throughout the works.

Harewood Downs, Buckinghamshire, England
Work to rebuild all of their bunkers has already been approved to commence in 2018 being phased in over two years.
Moor Hall, West Midlands, England
An insightful Historic Research Study has driven a bunker renovation programme that will bring back some
magnificent old bunker shapes that had been completely lost over the decades. Work is scheduled to start in 2019.
Worthing, Sussex, England
Worthing are also embarking on a bunker refurbishment and 2017 saw the production of a full Historic Research
Study and Course Audit. Work started in November with a resumption in 2018.

Chris Huggett has been a key member of Mackenzie & Ebert since the formation of the company in 2005. He has
been responsible for producing plans, earth movement, 3D modelling, visualisations and historical course studies
which have assisted with virtually every project, as well as artwork for all of our publications, such as the booklets
which have featured the proposals for Turnberry, Royal Portrush and Royal Troon.
Chris has visited a number of courses with his drone this year including Goodwood, Royal St. George’s, Turnberry and
Saunton to produce hole by hole flythroughs and photography. Chris has also been involved in a number of non golf
projects including the Horsham Piazza Italia Ferrari event and marketing videos/photography for private &
commercial properties.

Mike Howard
Mike Howard, who joined the company in July 2016, has established himself rapidly as a strong member of the team.
He has been closely involved with the work at Princes this year and has been to South America four times, most
recently supervising construction at Lima Golf Club.
His challenge now is to find a way to keep his game in good shape when exposed to the rigours of life as a golf course
architect. Few have fared well in that struggle.
