JJ Waller’s Brighton Third time quirky “I never set out to do a Brighton book,” says photographer JJ Waller. “It was just that I had lots of pictures, and people around me liked what I had done, and suggested that I do one, and that kind of opened up the idea.” Since JJ Waller’s Brighton Vol:01 was published in 2012, JJ has gone on to produce books on Blackpool and St Leonards-on- Sea as well as a second, and now a third book on his home city. “We live in a place which is constantly evolving,” he says. “Brighton has always been a place that has tried to think outside the box. It delights in embracing the maverick and the avant garde. It attracts creative people, and so it evolves. That’s one of the reasons why it’s such an interesting place to photograph, because there are lots of interesting things and interesting people.” The images in Vol:03 have been thoughtfully paired to give the book “a particular flow”. You’ll find a photograph of the construction of the i360 alongside a photograph of the demolition of the old Amex building; a crowd gathered at Paddle Round the Pier next to a snow-swept Hove promenade. “My Brighton books are essentially a chronicle of the people and the events that make Brighton the place it is,” JJ says. “I think they’ll become more and more interesting as time goes on. It’s interesting to think of people looking through this book in one hundred years’ time, trying to spot things and recognise things, as we do now as we do now when we look at old photographs. “I like to think that it captures what people describe as being the real Brighton, but it only captures the real Brighton in a superficial kind of way. It doesn’t really go into the social problems – housing and addiction and poverty. I’m not frightened of showing this sort of stuff, and some of the images allude to these things, but at the same time I’m not doing a fly-on-the-wall sort of documentary; it’s a book that is aimed at tourists and locals and people that want to celebrate the fun side of Brighton.” A quote on the reverse of the book sums it up perfectly, as ‘a cacophony of absurdity, joy, effervescence, eccentricity, incongruity, colour… and humour all tempered by the occasional hint of melancholy’. “I’m inquisitive, and I’m attracted to the surprise of what I might see around the corner, what I encounter, what I might come across,” JJ says. “I like talking to people, engaging with a place and learning about it.
