NORTHAMPTONSHIRE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Voluntary Impact Northamptonshire needs car owners with spare time on their hands, to
help take people who cannot manage on public transport to their medical appointments
(details on page 23). As part of their Side by Side initiative, The Alzheimer’s Society
need volunteers who have a few spare hours each week to help support someone with
Dementia, doing the things they love (details on page 4).

someone with dementia in
your local community?
In 2013, the report ‘Dementia
2013: The hidden voice of
loneliness’ showed that more
than a third (39%) of people with
dementia said they felt lonely.
Meanwhile, 70% of people with
dementia had stopped doing
things they used to due to a lack
of confidence and nearly 50% of
people with dementia only went
out to do things in their local
area once a week or less.
This study was the catalyst for
the development of Side by Side
- a service which would combat
loneliness and empower people
with dementia to remain active
and involved in their
communities.
Side by Side pairs a local
volunteer to a person with
dementia based on similar
hobbies, interests or life
experiences.
The Side by Side volunteer then
visits either weekly or fortnightly

Nearly 2,000 people with dementia are waiting for volunteers across the UK, with over 30 in
Northamptonshire alone. So whether you’re a social butterfly, shopaholic or nature lover, we
need volunteers like you. You can volunteer on a day that suits you, either
in person or over the phone - so it's a flexible way to give your time and
really make a huge difference to someone's life.

The Advanced Driver Course
The advanced driver course provides members of the
public with effective post driving test training. It is
appropriate for anyone with a driving licence, no matter
what age. The content of the course is based on police
driver training but is conducted at legal speeds. The
course will raise your driving skills to advanced test
standard and will build on your existing experience. It
will also help those who experience difficulty with certain
roads and situations. Things they may actively avoid.

By Robbie Lane, Alzheimer’s Society in the East Midlands
Vascular dementia is the second most
common form of dementia after Alzheimer’s
disease. Affecting about 150,000 people in
the UK, it’s caused by problems with the blood
supply to the brain and can often occur after a
stroke. A condition called cerebral small vessel
disease is also thought to be one of the main
causes of vascular dementia. The condition
damages tiny blood vessels that supply vital
oxygen and nutrients to brain cells. Currently
there is no cure for vascular dementia.

What is vascular
dementia?
Even though it is the second most common
form of dementia, research into vascular
dementia lags behind other conditions.
Recognising this, Alzheimer’s Society
partnered with the British Heart Foundation
and the Stroke Association to create a £2.2
million funding boost for research into the
condition. Three projects were funded as part
of this partnership, including a study at the
University of Edinburgh led by Professor
Joanna Wardlaw.
Not everyone who has a stroke develops
memory problems and Professor Wardlow is
using her project to understand more about
why this is the case. Professor Wardlaw is
also running a trial, funded by Alzheimer’s
Society, to understand whether drugs to treat
stroke and heart disease can prevent small
vessel disease and therefore potentially
vascular dementia as well.
‘Vascular dementia affects many people
across the UK and worldwide, yet we still
don’t know much about it.’ says Professor
Wardlaw. ‘We hope that through in depth
investigation, more funding and increased
collaboration between researchers and
clinicians, we can begin to shed some light on
the causes of vascular dementia and
importantly, find ways to treat it.’
Vascular dementia is caused by reduced blood supply to
the brain due to diseased blood vessels.

Risk of vascular dementia is linked closely to
our lifestyle, although genetics and
environment may also play a role. Smoking,
high blood pressure and diabetes are all
thought to increase the likelihood of
developing the condition. Therefore, the best
thing you can do to reduce your risk of
vascular dementia is to make changes that
address these lifestyle factors,
especially in midlife.

What a Carry On!
Northampton based Next Page Productions return to
Midlands stages this spring to celebrate the
60 th Anniversary of the first ever Carry On Film!
A mainstay of the touring theatre scene in Northampton, Next Page
Productions continue to produce fresh new theatre and will present
their new show, Funny Faces, across Northamptonshire and the
Midlands this spring. Performed as two one-person plays, they have
been brought together to tell the stories of the true King and Queen of
the Carry On films. Funny Faces features company founder and
Northampton based Caroline Nash, as Joan Sims in Simply Joan, which
tells the relatively unknown story of this
British icon. The second play features
Steve Dimmer, who also wrote the
plays, as Sid James in Wot Sid Did,
featuring Sid in his dressing room prior
to his last ever performance. These are
both poignant, funny and touching stories. 2018 celebrates the
60 th anniversary of the first ever showing of the 31 Carry On films and
Next Page Productions wants to celebrate this incredible part of
British history.
Funny Faces is written by Steve Dimmer, a Northampton based actor,
magician, writer and children’s entertainer who has written over 20
theatre pieces for children and over 10 full length theatrical works.
He has won awards for his close up magic and has performed all over the British Isles. Caroline has
produced 4 previous tours and has acted for both theatre and television. She was the winner of the
2014 Northamptonshire Come Dine With Me, and returned to take on winners from other regions in
Come Dine Champion of Champions in which she was praised by Birmingham’s Michelin
starred chef Glynn Purnell. She recently appeared in BBC2’s ‘My Country; A work in progress’ directed
by the National Theatres Artistic Director, Rufus Norris. Steve and Caroline are both extremely excited
about bringing this new show to local theatres, as this will be the first time that they have worked
together in almost 30 years. They previously toured with Steve’s ‘The Inflatable Theatre Company’
around Northamptonshire pubs when they were just youngsters!

How would you summarise what you do?
I teach cheerleading in schools, universities, recreational
classes & competitive teams. Classes focus on all-star
cheerleading which includes; gymnastics, lifts, jumps &
dance!
What first got you interested and how long have you
been doing it?
I started cheerleading at Kingston University in 2009, I
competed all 3 years at university & also joined Surrey
Starlets in my 3 rd year, where I was given the
opportunity to start coaching. I've now been coaching
for 6 years.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
What’s your background?
I started dancing at a young age & also teach dance &
fitness classes alongside cheerleading. Occasionally I
perform professionally, but I would say I am semi-retired
as a performer!
Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired mostly by other coaches in the industry,
their creativity & how they manage their teams!

They're really proud of me for following my dreams.
They are also very supportive which I really appreciate
as I work unsociable hours so don't get to spend as

There are too many to choose from. My cheerleaders
often have me in hysterics.
What’s the scariest experience you’ve ever had?
Due to the nature of cheerleading, we very
occasionally have injuries. It's always scary when one
of my cheerleaders gets injured but I'm first aid
trained so know how to deal with any accidents.
What three things are at the top of your bucket list?
To go to the cheerleading worlds at Disney World!
