Library brought community new and exciting programs in 2017
Kate Hall
Executive Director
Northbrook Public Library
As 2017 comes to a
close, the Northbrook
Public Library marks another
rewarding year, full
of fun and educational
programs that brought
many patrons together.
Our community of music
lovers tuned into several
great musical performances
this year. Rock
Music Month returned
for its second year, bringing
Jimy Sohns and The
Shadows of Knight into
the library to perform
their rock anthem “Gloria.”
Our Fine Arts Fall
series opened its 25th
season in September, followed
by the new Sound
Exploration Series, which
challenged the boundaries
of music with avant-garde
and experimental compositions.
All of our musical
offerings were greatly
enhanced by the Steinway
classic grand piano we
received on long-term
loan from the Northbrook
Steinway & Sons gallery.
Live music performances
weren’t the only
events that drew people to
the library. In May, four
Northbrook-area residents
shared their stories as they
took the stage for our first
live TEDxNorthbrookLibrary
event. This summer,
we saw 675 adults, 2,226
kids and teens and 87 babies
join our Shape Your
Community summer reading
program. We continued
the literacy celebration
with our new 1,000
Books Before Kindergarten
initiative, launched in
September, which invites
families with young children
to dive into early
visit us online at NORTHBROOKTOWER.com
literacy. We were also
amazed to see hundreds of
people from the community
gather at the library
to observe the August solar
eclipse and celebrate
with us. We kept the solar
system party going as we
invited Star Wars fans to
our second Star Wars Day
in December.
In addition to bringing
you new and exciting
programs, we have spent
the year making the library
more convenient for
you. In May, we merged
our Reader Services and
MultiMedia departments
into the Fiction & Media
department — name chosen
by you — and created
one centrally located desk
to streamline our services
and provide help more
readily. We also updated
our meeting room policy
to allow more community
groups to use our space to
engage in civil discourse
on current events and political
and social issues.
Toward the end of 2017,
we began preparing the
building for our new makerspace,
which will be
named The Collaboratory;
another name chosen by
you! The Collaboratory
is a place for people of
all ages and backgrounds
to create things together.
It will feature a laser cutter,
sewing and embroidery
machines, robotics
and electronics kits, and
so much more. The space
will officially open in
May with a Grand Opening
celebration in July.
The Collaboratory is the
first step in our Master
Plan to update our building
over several years
so that we continuously
adapt to better serve the
community. In 2018, we
will also be rolling out our
Strategic Plan, which will
guide us on our mission to
be a place where community
happens.
We are so grateful to
work with such amazing
partners, including the
Northbrook Arts Commission,
the Historical
Society, Go Green Northbrook,
Northbrook Symphony
Orchestra, and our
local schools and businesses.
We would also like
to thank our board members,
staff, and volunteers
for their hard work. Finally,
we would like to thank
you, our patrons, for all
your feedback and loyalty.
We invite you to visit us
often and see what’s next
for the library!
