Community is the past, present,
future at Northfield Township

For the third consecutive
year, Northfield
Township has been able to
manage costs so carefully
that we have lowered our
levy while maintaining
services. While this is not
something that can go on
indefinitely, it does demonstrate
our commitment
to serving our residents
efficiently and effectively.
With three of our four
trustees being new, we
have the advantage of new
ideas and fresh perspectives,
which nicely complement
the institutional
memory and community
knowledge provided by
our returning elected officials.
We make an effort
to review our services,
processes and staffing
regularly so that our residents
know their tax dollars
are being used wisely.
We continue to see
growth in our passport application
acceptance activity.
People appreciate
the convenience of setting
appointment times in advance,
particularly when
parents are accompanying
minors for their applications.
Our weekly evening
hours and ability to provide
photos are also helpful.
The Northfield Township
Food Pantry continues
to be a valued asset to
our community. Serving
just less than 600 local
households, the pantry is
able to carry on its work
because of its volunteers
and donors. Since no tax
dollars are used to supply
the pantry, it is essential
to garner this community
support.
In addition to the adults
on whom we depend so
heavily, we are grateful to
the young people who are
part of the network of support.
Scouting for Food,
Character Counts, Glenbrook
South and Glenbrook
North, as well as
many other organizations,
provide crucial amounts
of food. Confirmands, bat
and bar mitzvahs, Scouts,
kids celebrating birthdays
and running food drives
... the list of supporters is
a reflection of our entire
community. We are grateful
that so many people
share the belief that hunger
is unacceptable in our
community.
As always, I am grateful
to our staff for their
concentration on serving
residents well while conserving
resources. Their
attentiveness and dedication
benefits our entire
community.

A few years ago, The
English Room, and much
of the Deer Path Inn that
houses the restaurant,
went through an extensive
renovation. The kitchen
also debuted new breakfast
and dinner menus
while keeping most of its
lunch offerings the same,
with a few upgrades.
“The lunch menu was
curated over time,” General
Manager Matt Barba
said. “What essentially
became the favorites, we
left those on there.”
Lunch features refined
options like the duck
Niçoise or lobster and
crab ravioli, and more accessible
dishes, like the
chicken club sandwich.
Familiar dishes dot the
appetizers list, including
crab cake, charcuterie and
beet salad.

Merlo’s Italian Restaurant
(581 Roger Williams Ave,
Highland Park)
The first year of a restaurant’s
existence can be
the most challenging. This
is when many either succeed
or fail.
Reaching the five-year
anniversary mark for Merlo’s
Italian Restaurant, in
Highland Park, shows that
things are definitely working.
“Our core menu has
stayed almost 100 percent
the same,” said John Merlo,
who owns the restaurant
with his wife, Laura,
and lives in nearby Glencoe.
“We have developed
our good staples, Chicago-style
Italian food, so
they know what they are
getting when they come.”
A popular destination
year-round, Merlo’s sees
plenty of foot traffic during
the summer months
as it’s located in the city’s
Ravinia neighborhood.
