Community invited to three very special
GenShoah programs in February
“
Ida
Margolis
GenShoah
Chair
Moving Pictures: An Analysis
of Films About the Holocaust”
will be presented by
Dr. Andre Krauss on Sunday, February
18 at 5:00 p.m. at Beth Tikvah, 1459
Pine Ridge Road, Naples. A research
fellow at the Institute of Sociology at
the Romanian Academy, Dr. Krauss
is a published art historian and media
psychologist. He holds doctorates in
History of Art from the University
of Gothenburg, Sweden, and Social
Psychology from the University of Bucharest,
Romania. Krauss will present
a riveting program which will address
many discussions and controversies
about Holocaust filmography, including
the controversial topic: Is comedy
an appropriate genre for narrating the
Holocaust?
Film clips from dozens of documentaries
and feature films will be shown as
Dr. Krauss reviews the different genres
and techniques used intentionally – and
perhaps unintentionally – to report, explain
and often manipulate the subject
of the Holocaust.
Krauss will discuss how various
individual personalities and style preferences
of movie directors – such as
Claude Lanzmann and Steven Spielberg
– had their imprint on Holocaust
cinematography, and how political
contingencies also governed the production
and distribution of movies about the
Holocaust. Reservations are required
for this program and should be made by
sending a $10 check payable to HMEC
to the Holocaust Museum & Education
Center of Southwest Florida, 4760
Tamiami Trail North, Ste. 7, Naples, FL
34103. Please be sure to indicate that
the reservation is for the program on
Sunday, February 18.
The award-winning film Fanny’s
Journey will be presented on Tuesday,
February 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Beth Tikvah.
“Based on a true story, Fanny’s Journey
is an incredible tale of bravery, strength
and survival, a story of a daring young
girl who will stop at nothing and fear
no one. In 1943, 13-year-old Fanny and
her younger sisters were sent from their
home in France to an Italian foster home
for Jewish children. When the Nazis arrive
in Italy, their caretakers desperately
organize the departure of the children to
Switzerland.” However, suddenly these
children are left completely on their
own. This superbly acted film that has
won national and international awards
is both suspenseful and inspirational.
that. Every year, we tell the story and
relive the history of our people as they
make the arduous journey from slavery
to freedom. We explore the story, we
insert ourselves into it, we ensure that
it’s a personal narrative.
hard to protect the history of our people
during Pesach, so must we work to
protect the history of our people during
the Holocaust. The personal, firsthand
accounts of the Jewish experience during
WWII/the Holocaust and in the
years of recovery afterwards, are vital
partnering with survivors to hear their
testimony, to share in their experiences.
For the second year in a row, students
will collaborate with survivors to gather
these important moments of our history,
to share them with the community, and
help as we continue to weave the tapestry
of our collective Jewish memory.
Join us on April 8 at 10:00 a.m. at
Temple Shalom for our communitywide
commemoration and help us
ensure these memories live on, never
