I l B F 6A Federation Star February 2018 JEWISH FEDERATION Building cultural bridges through bilingual teaching By Richard Price Around the world, increasing numbers of students are being taught in bilingual or trilingual schools. In some cases, this is because the pupils’ native language is not spoken outside their country’s borders. In others, it is so that pupils are better equipped to participate in a global economy. Bilingualism, schools are realizing, is a way to break down social and cultural barriers. An integrated bilingual school is born Hand in Hand (the Center for Jewish- Arab Education) in Israel is a unique group of public schools under the auspices of the Israeli Education Ministry, where Jewish and Arab students learn together in both Hebrew and Arabic in an integrated multicultural setting. Most schools in Israel tend to be divided along Arab-Jewish lines. Jewish pupils study in Jewish schools, where the medium of pupils in the Jerusalem school. This year, there are 697. Sixty percent of these pupils are Arab; 40 per cent are Jewish. (The school aims for a 50:50 ratio, but more Arabs than Jews tend to apply.) It is funded in the same way as all schools in Israel, with a budget for one teacher for each class. The money for the second teacher comes from philanthropic donations. Bilingual education at work Mimi Fakih, an Arabic-speaking teacher, speaks to her kindergarten class almost exclusively in Arabic; her coteacher speaks entirely in Hebrew. On one wall are Arabic vowels; on the other are Hebrew words for family members. A calendar marks Jewish, Muslim and Christian religious festivals. Fakih translates only when she can see a child struggling to understand. Arab pupils study in Arabic-medium schools. Bilingual education crosses this divide. Research has confirmed that the bilingual brain can be better at switching between two tasks than the monolingual brain, owing to its ability to suppress one language while using another. Bilingual children have also been shown to adjust more easily than monolingual children to environmental changes. Research in the UK has shown that the more pupils there are in an area speaking English as an additional language, the more successful those children are likely to be at school. In addition, a recent study in the journal Child Development provides a roadmap of effective methods. The article examines the cognitive advantages of bilingualism. Bilingualism facilitates achievement if children’s second language was good enough at the start of school to ensure that they were fully engaged with their lessons. Consequently, the study called on teachers to identify early on those children who might be in need of additional language support. The challenges can be significant Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel generally live and learn in separate neighborhoods and schools. This lack of exposure and interaction breeds mistrust and a lack of respect between the two communities. Hand in Hand is working to create a vibrant and inclusive shared society in Israel by bringing together Jewish and Arab citizens on a daily and sustained basis in their integrated schools and communities. In doing so, they are forging practices of mutual understanding and shared living, proving that there is a viable alternative to endless cycles of conflict. Yet according to art teacher Efrat Mayer, “I understood Holocaust history, European history and Israeli history. But only when I came here did I understand the challenges of Palestinian society and history.” Bilingualism plays a key role in breaking down this divide. At one point, an Arab teacher recounts what happened to her family in 1948, when the State of Israel was established. At the end of the story, she pauses. “I’ve never told this story in Hebrew before,” she says. Similarly, Mayer has heard her grandmother’s Holocaust story recounted in Arabic. The benefits follow Around the world, research has reinforced the idea that pupils given immersive language lessons are more motivated to learn the language, and are more confident that they will be able to make practical use of it. However, even a fully immersive school cannot shut out the outside world. A 16-year-old Jewish pupil Leila Ben-Horin, says, “So sometimes conversations just go to Hebrew, because we don’t know a word or a sentence in Arabic. A lot of people are surprised. My Jewish friends outside school – they think it’s strange I have Arab friends. Their normal life is going to school where most of the students are Jewish. There are definitely some people who think it’s weird. Some of them definitely think it’s cool, that it’s a good thing. And some think you’re doing something wrong by cooperating with the – I don’t know – the enemy, really. That Arabs are all terrorists and they’re trying to kill us.” But, comments another student, “It is much harder to believe this once you understand Arabic.” “I had a ballet teacher,” says 16-year-old Inbar Shaked-Verdi. “When I talked to her about my school, about learning Arabic, she told me that when she hears Arabs talk on the train, she gets so scared. JEWISH FEDERATION Israel at 70 – last chance to join us By Jane Schiff, Federation Board Chair For months I have been telling you about our Federation mission to Israel. Now is the time to sign up. We are booking rooms, filling our bus and packing our bags. We are off on a very special Israel at 70 Jewish Federation of Greater Naples mission to see Israel as you have never before seen it. We will be celebrate Lag B’Omer at a campfire with the children at Neve Michael. We will walk in the paths of David Ben-Gurion and Teddy Kollek, two of the founders of Israel. We will see the ancient past of our people in Jerusalem and Caesarea. We will visit many of the agencies our Federation supports such as an ORT school, an Aliyah absorption center, the Ethiopian National Program’s School Performance and Community Empowerment Scholastic Assistance Program, Neve Michael, Hand in Hand (a school for Jews and Arabs studying together), Yad LaKashish (a center for elderly who create beautiful objects), and the Red Mountain Therapeutic Riding Center. And, yes, there will be time for shopping. There will be lunches in bustling markets. There will be a Shabbat dinner with Lone Soldiers who come from other countries and have no support in Israel; speakers; an amazing guide; and our very own Scholars-in- Residence, Jane and Rabbi Jim Perman. First-timers to Israel will go to Masada and the Dead Sea. We will all welcome the Shabbat with yeshiva students as they descend to welcome the Shabbat at the Western Wall. We are staying in five-star hotels. Most meals are included. We are flying to Tel Aviv and back from Miami, so there will be no changing planes, just one non-stop flight.
