This film has won “Audience Favorite” at over 15 film festivals, and as reviewers have said, “it will both keep you on the edge of your seat” and ultimately “warm your heart.” Fanny’s Journey is the true and absorbing story of a 13-year-old girl who is separated from her parents in Nazi-occupied France. After the arrest of Fanny’s father, her mother sends Fanny and her two younger sisters to a boarding school in France’s neutral zone where Jewish children seek refuge. But the school isn’t a haven for long. The Jewish students have to be smuggled to another institution in France, occupied by the Italians, just before a German raid. As political circumstances change, travel documents are secured for the children to cross into Switzerland. On the way, Fanny is forced to take charge of all these young children. Beautifully directed and with a wonderful cast, this is a story that is quite relevant in the present moment. The film is suitable for anyone from 12 to 112. The 94-minute film is in French with English subtitles. There is no charge, but donations will be requested at the showing of the film at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6 at Beth Tikvah, 1459 Pine Ridge Road, Naples. She also wrote cookbooks and taught cooking lessons alongside Julia Child. In her 80s, she had a debilitating stroke, which she adapted to, refusing to give in. He decided to share his mother’s love of food and cooking, including some esoteric and difficult-to-find ingredients, which led to some hilarious passages in the book. After a second stroke and a bout with cancer, Judy finally succumbed at the age of 93. But her earlier brushes with death were met with miraculous comebacks and requests for her favorite foods, even forays to her favorite restaurants. I suspect that many readers will relate to the last section of the book, and how gracefully this son met his mother’s last wishes. In the end, Gethers did create that special meal for his mother, and through her love of food he engages the reader in the extraordinary story of her life.
