4A Federation Star February 2018 Our powerful women Phyllis Seaman Federation Vice Chair What a fabulous time in history to be a woman. As women, our control of wealth and commitment to philanthropy have grown tremendously in the last 25 years. By 2020, women will control 22 trillion dollars in personal wealth in the U.S. Our powerful women are all of you who make a gift to the Federation to support our Greater Naples community and help the many needs around the world. It was an especially powerful message in the last few months after Hurricane Irma, when so many women gave to the Disaster Relief Fund. Our Women’s Division is every woman making a gift in her own name to the annual campaign. We are the heart and soul of the campaign. We have our new Pomegranate Division, thanks to the hard work and commitment of Betty Schwartz and Susan Pittelman. Thirty-two women have already committed to an annual minimum gift of $1,800. Todah rabah! As word spreads and season ramps up, I’m sure this group will grow. The Women’s Division in 2017 contributed $333,000 to our annual campaign, of which $283,000 came from our Lions of Judah. Now to some very exciting news that was announced at the Federation’s Major Gifts/Lion of Judah event in January. The semi-annual Lion of Judah Conference will take place January 13-15, 2019, at the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, Florida. There is no reason why we can’t have a fabulous turnout and show our Naples Pride. If we get a large enough response, we could hire a bus for the round trip and leave the driving to someone else. If all that hasn’t excited you to join in, maybe this will: Rosalee Bogo will be a Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland honoree representing the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples. Rosalee is so deserving of this honor after all her time and passion serving our community and her former community of Chattanooga, Tennessee. She became a Lion of Judah in 1985. I’m sure most of you know how much Rosalee has contributed to our community, but here is a brief rundown: 2004: Joined the Executive Board of the Federation as a Vice President and co-chaired the 2005-2006 annual campaign. 2007-2008: Spearheaded a team to move from our former office to the current larger one with a community room that is used by many local Jewish groups. 2006-2012: Served an unprecedented six-year term as President of the Jewish Federation of Collier County. Rosalee, is not only a face of Federation, she is the face of our Jewish community. She also is very active in Beth Tikvah Synagogue and is a past co-president. Rosalee is on the board of the Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida. I’m so happy for her. No one I know deserves this honor more. Thank you for being my friend and mentor. We have three new Lions for 2018 – women committed to an annual minimum gift of $5,000 in their own name. Our Pride has grown to 56. We had one new Lion in 2017. Two Lions raised their levels of giving: one to the Ruby level for 2018 at a minimum of $10,000; and one in 2017 to the Olympics Jeffrey Feld Federation President/ CEO The 2018 Winter Olympics are upon us. We will have the opportunity to follow individual athletes as well as countries as they vie to showcase their top performances. It is about identifying excellence. Those who are the most successful will have the opportunity to win a Gold Medal. Each participant wants to show his/her superiority at a particular skill. The Olympics are a paradigm of competitiveness. Here in our Greater Naples home, we enjoy the luxuries that this community provides. We are a Gold Medal community, not because of a sense of competitiveness, but rather because we want to create the best possible Jewish community to be enjoyed by our residents. As we evaluate what this Jewish community has to offer, we all recognize the congregations, organizations and programs in the superlative. We have five wonderful congregations, three of which have religious schools and two of which have excellent preschools. We have BBYO, which serves as our community youth group, supported by the congregations and Federation. Now ladies, I hope all this has given you a little push to join our Pride or the Pomegranate Society to help our Federation continue to support our Jewish community here, in Israel and over 65 countries around the world. Center of Southwest Florida, which was identified as the Best Museum in Collier County in 2017. We have the Naples Senior Center at JFCS, which continues to grow and do excellent work. Within Federation, the WCA and the MCA are shining stars for adult engagement in leisure time recreation, informal education and socialization activities. The JCRC (Jewish Community Relations Council) and the IAC (Israel Advocacy Committee) continue to bring exceptional speakers and documentaries to our community. This all happens because everyone in our community wants this to happen. We also have needs in this community. Through the annual campaign, our Federation is able to distribute funds to help meet those needs. It is because of your continued financial support of our community that we can do all of these things and reflect on them as “Gold Medal.” Some of the events in the Olympics tend to be more “sprint” oriented. The nature of the Jewish Federation and the nature of building a community is that we are here in a “marathon.” Every day, every week, every month and year, we strive to be the best and to do the best for our community. We need everybody in this community to continue to work together to “go for the goal” of having an excellent community. We need everybody’s participation in Campaign 2018 so that we may continue in our Gold-Medal ways. Event Chair Rosalee Bogo welcomed 90 guests to this kickoff event of the Federation’s 2018 annual campaign. Mort Naiman, Senior Vice President For Global Philanthropy, and Max Ryabinin, Israel Fellow at Vanderbilt University, both representing the Jewish Agency For Israel (JAFI), were our guest speakers.
