Fight to make intersection
safer continues tomorrow
• By Bridget Rutherford
CONCERNS WITH a
contentious Ferrymead
intersection will go to a city
council committee tomorrow,
in a bid to get “urgent”
improvements made to it.
Hagley-Ferrymead Community
Board chairwoman Sara
Templeton will speak before the
infrastructure, transport and
environment committee about
the board’s concerns with the St
Andrews Hill and Bridle Path
Rds intersection.
The board wants the committee
to consider the safety issues
of the intersection and take “urgent
action” to improve the way
it operates and make it safer.
It comes a month after a city
council report criticised the layout
of the intersection.
A cyclist also received minor
injuries after being knocked off
his bike there on May 12.
The city council designed
and installed the intersection as
part of the Ferrymead Bridge
rebuild.
It became operational in
September.
But in a recent report, the city
council’s own traffic engineers
found significant design problems
they say should have been
picked up when a pre-construction
safety audit was done in
February 2014.
The problems included
difficulties turning right onto
Bridle Path Rd from St Andrews
Hill Rd, the speed of vehicles
approaching the intersection, a
lack of visibility, and queuing of
vehicles.
Underground cables have
been laid so traffic signals could
be installed at the bottom of St
Andrews Hill Rd, at a cost of
$150,000.
The community board wants
city council staff to look into
installing those signals.
Residents have previously
told Bay Harbour News they
avoided using the intersection,
and they raised concerns
about the lay-out before it was
installed.
HAVE YOUR SAY: What
changes would you like to
see made at the St Andrews
Hill and Bridle Path Rds
intersection? Would traffic
signals at the bottom of
St Andrews Hill Rd help?
A tremendous effort from
the Lyttelton and Governors
Bay Volunteer Fire Brigades
at the weekend. Not only did
they stomp up 1103 stairs at
the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair
very worthy cause. Check
out page 3 to find out which
CHOCOLATE CHEWED OVER AT COUNCIL
A HEATED discussion was quelled
at a city council meeting last week
when a councillor was told to “eat a
Snickers.”
During last week’s meeting, city
councillor Jamie Gough joked
that fellow councillor Glenn
Livingstone should have a snack
during passionate discussions
over a deputation presented to the
felt Cr Livingstone needed a bite of
chocolate to calm down.
Firefighter steps up for charity
• By Bridget Rutherford
LYTTELTON’S Glen Walker
has gone out in style, winning
his age group of the gruelling
Firefighter Sky Tower Stair
Challenge for the second year
running.
He won the over-60s race
with a time of 14min 23sec.
Mr Walker, who said this
would be his last time competing,
won the same race last
year by more than 3min, and
took out the over-50s race
about three years ago.
Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade
raised about $32,763 for
Leukaemia and Blood Cancer
New Zealand – its largest effort
yet.
In doing so, it raised the
second highest amount, after
Auckland Airport Fire Rescue,
which raised $64,468.
It also took out the top fundraising
team in its category.
The volunteer fire brigade
members competed in the
annual Firefighter Sky Tower
Challenge on Saturday, running
up the 1103 steps of
Auckland Sky Tower in 25kg of
gear in the name of charity.
Peter Lauryssens and Craig
Smith won individual awards
for each raising about $11,500.
This year’s efforts blew away
the team’s fundraising total of
$19,300 last year.
Mr Walker said the fundraising
efforts were “sensational”.
A team from the Governors
Bay Volunteer Fire Brigade
also took part in the event raising
just over $14,300.
More than 850 firefighters
from across the country took
part in this year’s event, which
in total raised more than
$1,161,000.
Leukaemia and Blood
Cancer NZ chief executive
Pru Etcheverry said she was
humbled at the amount of
time, effort and commitment
every participant put in to
fundraising.
“Their commitment to raising
this money means that
we can continue to be there
for more patients around the
country and in these communities
who have supported
their local brigades in so many
ways.”
winning the over-60s
category for the second
year running.
COASTAL HAZARDS
REVIEW
THe city council last week
approved GHD Consultant’s
terms of reference for an expert
panel to review the Tonkin
+ Taylor Coastal Hazards
Assessment Report. The original
report, released in July, identified
6000 properties that could be
susceptible to erosion. It also
reported that nearly 18,000
homes were at risk of coastal
inundation over the next 50 to
100 years. But the science of the
findings was widely questioned
by the communities affected.
The city council has also
approved the scope of the review,
scientific and legal questions to
be answered by the expert panel,
and a preliminary time line for
the panel to have completed the
review.
Small buses in service
• By Tania Green
USER FRIENDLY: Passengers on the 535 route from Eastgate to Rapaki were the first to
ride in Red Bus’ new smaller buses last week, which are the first to be introduced in New
Zealand.
LYTTELTON AND Ferrymead
residents were among the
first people to ride in a new
line of buses brought in to
accommodate those living in
smaller neighbourhoods.
Red Bus’ 535 route, which
runs from Eastgate to Rapaki,
stopping at Ferrymead shops
and Lyttelton Wharf, was the
first to use one of the smaller
Mercedes-Benz City 45 buses
on Thursday.
Each can seat up to 22 passengers,
and are easily accessible
to the elderly and disabled.
They can also
take two bikes on
the front.
The buses have
been introduced
as a more userfriendly
and less
disruptive option
to the older, 55-seater ones.
It is a first for New Zealand,
because the buses are fully
urban compliant vehicles.
Red Bus acting chief executive
Terry Foote (above) said it was a
win-win for everyone.
“These routes don’t have a
large number of passengers
on them, they’re narrower
streets, they make more economical
sense to run the smaller
buses, they’re friendlier,” he
said.
More routes will be rolled
out in the next couple of
months, including Styx Mill
to Northlands, Casebrook to
Northlands, Westmorland to
Sydenham and Burwood Hospital
to New Brighton.
All services will be in place by
the end of July.
Redcliffs School
moves forward
Redcliffs School
parent and
spokesman Mark
Robberds is leaving
the Board of
Trustees after six
years. He reflects
on his time.
Given the school’s
circumstances, our move offsite
and the threat of closure,
you might expect this soap box
rant to be a tale of tribulation
and woe. I’m afraid I’m going
to disappoint you, because
being part of the Redcliffs
community during this time
been a thoroughly positive
experience.
Sometimes you can take
the simple things like a local
school for granted. If you have
school age kids you’ll probably
find your school is the
centre of your social network
– which is a nice to have. In
times of crisis, however, which
we understand so well in
Christchuch, a rallying point
like your local school is a must
have.
That’s because
schools are an essential
part of what is called
social capital. They
contribute to our wellbeing
and make us all
healthier and happier.
For this reason, any attempt
to close a school
must be given the
weightiest consideration.
For many years the Ministry
of Education has told schools
to develop strong school cultures
and strong links between
schools and communities.
At Redcliffs, we can proudly
say that we have more than
achieved these goals. Our
school/community culture is
so strong that at the moment
Redcliffs, the village, and Redcliffs,
the school, are one and
the same.
A lot of this strength comes
from the fact that our school
was at the front-line of earthquake
response and continues
to be the focal point of earthquake
recovery in Redcliffs.
This is social capital in action.
As well as responding to
the earthquakes, this amazing
community has found the time
and energy to devote thousands
of hours to the school’s
survival. It’s been a coordinated
team effort that has seen a
huge amount of people devote
their resources to addressing
Minister Parata’s concerns
about the school site.
We are now extremely confident
that we have solved these
problems and have a robust
and scientific plan in place
that will allow us to return to
Redcliffs for the future.
Like most Cantabrians, the
people of Redcliffs feel like
we have been tested, and now
we feel like we’re turning the
corner of recovery. We feel like
getting on with things and not
being held back. We’re feeling
positive.
Last week Bay Harbour
News asked its readers what
they thought of Lyttelton
Port of Christchurch’s plan to
dredge a deeper navigation
channel into the harbour.
Archie Laird:
Interested to read your front
page article on the effects of
dredging Lyttelton Harbour.
Lyttelton Harbour has been
dredged for years so I don’t see
what the problem is.
Mention dolphins and an easy
target of the Lyttelton Port of
Christchurch and it becomes a
story.
Mark Watson, of Diamond
Harbour:
To dredge or not to dredge?
Lyttelton Port of Christchurch
wants to attract bigger ships, by
dredging our harbour deeper.
Who wins if bigger ships visit
New Zealand?
Bigger ships means fewer ships,
stopping at fewer ports.
Apparently bigger ships means
cheaper freight costs, because
the ships are more efficient. But
NZ exporters and importers
know that most of the costs for
seafreight are the compliance and
handling costs at each end, not
the cost of the actual over-water
journey.
Fewer ships stopping at fewer
ports means more freight will
have to go longer distances
by road (apparently rail isn’t
economic). So more expensive
freight costs. And more trucks
congesting the roads. And New
Zealand importing more fossil
fuels. And New Zealand emitting
more greenhouse gases.
Fewer ships stopping at fewer
ports means longer freight transit
times, and less schedule flexibility.
Which exporters will that
benefit?
Bigger ships mean bigger
problems when things go wrong.
Earlier this year LPC tugs pulled
a container ship back to safety
when a nor’west gust broke the
ship’s mooring lines and it
grounded off Diamond Harbour.
Could they have saved a bigger
ship? What if they couldn’t?
New Zealand can’t afford to let
bigger ships visit.
Why dredge?
Solvejg Ruarus responds
to National MP Nuk
Korako’s column about
cleaning up the city’s
waterways:
I am shocked by the so positive
sounding words from Nuk
Korako. If only it were true!
The reality is that the Government
is by no means doing
enough!
Readers respond to
Richard Suggate’s Soap
Box column about the
Diamond Harbour Ferry:
Mark Watson, of Diamond
Harbour:
You ask if the ferry service
links well with the buses.
For the last 10 years I’ve
lived in Diamond Harbour,
Previously
United Travel
and commuted to my work in
Sydenham, which is about five
minutes walk from a bus stop
on Brougham St.
Most days I use the ferry
and bus. The ferry takes seven
minutes from the Diamond
Harbour Wharf to B Jetty in
Lyttelton. From the time I step
on shore in Lyttelton, it takes
me 40-50 minutes to get to work
using the bus. The 11km journey
averages at 15km/h. If I catch a
ride with someone who has left
their car in Lyttelton
overnight, it takes me 15-20
minutes to get to work. That’s an
average speed of about
40km/h. The trip into work is
the easy part of bus commuting.
On the way home, if I want
to guarantee to catch say the
5.20pm ferry, I need to leave
work at 4.20pm. That’s an average
speed of 11km/h, about what
a horse and carriage would do.
If I leave a few minutes later
there’s a good chance I’ll miss
the 5.20 ferry, and I’ll have to
wait for the 5.50 ferry. That’s
an 80min trip, and an average
speed of 8km/h.
If I had a car at work that
homeward trip to the Lyttelton
ferry would take 15-20 minutes.
If I could bike through the tunnel,
I could bike the distance
comfortably in less than 40
minutes. I use the bus because
it’s less damaging to the planet
than taking a car. And I have
patience. Does that answer your
question?
Karen Clarke:
It should be left for connection
to town for all the commuters
who can’t walk so well.
Planning for rising seas
Green MP Eugenie Sage
says we need to plan for sea
level rise
Knowing the extent of a
problem is often the first step in
tackling it. We know that climate
change is happening and that
sea level is rising - at the rate of
3mm annually over last 15 years
around Christchurch.
How rapidly sea level will rise,
how it will affect different
coastal areas and
how we should best
prepare for it are much
less certain.
A 2015 report by
Parliamentary Commissioner
for the Environment
says there
are 10,000 homes in
Christchurch which are low-lying
and close to the coast and vulnerable
to sea level rise, more homes
than in Auckland, Wellington or
Dunedin.
The city council has been
thinking ahead, with research to
identify areas of future coastal
erosion and inundation over the
next 50 years and 100 years, for
both the city and Banks Peninsula.
Based on extensive international
science, the 2015 Tonkin
and Taylor technical report said
it was reasonable to plan for a sea
level rise of 1-2 metres by 2100,
depending on the melting rate
of the Antarctic and Greenland
ice-sheets.
The report has been controversial
because of the potential
effects on property values for
landowners whose homes and
properties were identified as being
in coastal hazard zones.
For example, the report showed
parts of Sumner, including homes
on the Esplanade as being at risk
of coastal flooding, and the rock
work and seawall at
Scarborough Beach as
at risk of over topping
by the sea in storm
surge events.
Identifying areas of
coastal hazard is the
first step. For this and
the next step – planning
how we respond
– Christchurch and other councils
need better guidance and
support from central government.
The most recent Government
guidance on sea level rise is from
2008. Our understanding has
changed a lot since then.
We need guidance on the
parameters for assessing coastal
hazards, a national database of
LiDAR elevation data, and funding
for national coastal monitoring
systems.
We also need a wider community
conversation about how
to share the cost in any areas that
we decide we may need to retreat
from because the costs of coastal
defence are too high.
Choir’s heartfelt tribute
• By Tom Doudney
A TIGHT-KNIT choir
group have recorded a
song for the funeral of
a terminally ill former
member now living in the
Netherlands.
Women in Harmony
recorded East Timorese
hymn Ita Hotu Maromak
Nia Povo We Are God’s
People at the request of
Dorien Pel who is dying
of cancer.
Ms Pel was a long time
member of the choir up
until about six years ago
when she first developed
cancer.
When her house was
damaged in the September
2010 earthquake,
she moved back to her
country of birth, the
Netherlands, for what
was supposed to be six
months. But the stay ended up
becoming permanent.
In spite of surgery, the
cancer had returned and Ms
Pel was already planning her
funeral in the Netherlands when
she returned to Christchurch for
a visit in December and January.
Choir member Judi Smitheram
said choir members had met Ms
Pel at a social gathering and sang
together again.
HARMONY: Choir member Dorien Pel, standing with red scarf, fifth
from left, with the choir in 2007.
“Dorien was wonderful at
always bringing poetry to our
gatherings and she had written
a poem especially for us,” Ms
Smitheram said.
It was during this visit that Ms
Pel asked if they would record
the song, which the choir had
not performed in more than
eight years.
The choir sourced a recording
of the song from Australia’s Radio
National station to help them
go over it and get the pronunciation
right, as the words are in the
Tetum language.
After recording it, they sent it
to Ms Pel.
“We got a lovely note back
from Dorien saying how much
she appreciated it and she was
very moved,” Ms Smitheram
said.
Women in Harmony has
about 20 members from around
Christchurch.
Charity that helps
most vulnerable
falls on tough times
• By Tom Doudney
A LOCAL trust which acts as a
problem solver for vulnerable,
disadvantaged and struggling
people around New Zealand
said it is in urgent need of
funding.
SigJaws Trust helps people in
a variety of ways, from lobbying
for retention of services,
suggesting changes to
legislation, finding work
and housing and promoting
innovations.
However, project manager
Gary Watts (right),
who founded SigJaws
in 2001, said the trust
had been struggling financially
for some time and needed more
funding to carry on.
The trust’s operating expenses
were “conservatively” about
$207,000 a year and while it had
enough to carry on over the next
six months, finding new funding
was a big challenge.
“We have got over 200
clients now that we are
dealing with on a day-to-day basis
and a lot of these people have
slipped through other systems
big-time,” Mr Watts said.
One of its recent projects has
included working with Canterbury
University to develop a
robotic arm which would allow
mobility-impaired drivers to fill
up at petrol stations without leaving
the car.
The trust had received funding
from organisations including the
Ministry of Social Development,
the Rotary Club of
Christchurch and The Lion
Foundation within the last
year.
However, it had been
unsuccessful in seeking
funding from the Red
Cross, the Canterbury Community
Trust and the city council.
“If our funding dries up it’s just
impossible to carry on,” Mr Watts
said.
SigJaws Trust board member
Jamie Hoffman, who has cerebral
palsy said Mr Watts had been
pivotal in helping him find suitable
accommodation after the
earthquakes.
“People just don’t realise how
much good he does out there,”
Mr Hoffman said.
High profile marketing opportunity for
your property
We have a fantastic marketing opportunity for you
to consider but before we get into that it’s pretty
obvious that winter has definitely hit with a bang
this year! But then again I suppose we all knew
that our lovely long summer was never going to
last forever. It’s funny how as soon as the cold
weather hits you start noticing all those enticing
advertisements for relaxed, sunny and warm
Pacific Island holidays. Blue skies, blue water and
a colourful cocktail in your hand. You’ve got to
admit it’s tempting! Which brings me to marketing
properties in the winter. Our business operates
right across the city, however our main trade
area has traditionally been the beach and hillside
suburbs. So often sellers hold-off putting their
property on the market in the winter, but in actual
fact the seaside and hill areas often look their best
in winter. A beautiful crystal clear winter day with
the sun low in the sky reflecting off a calm blue sea,
is when a property in these popular locations really
does stand out against other areas of the city. In
other words, winter is a great time to sell! The buyers are
still looking, and they definitely do not have the choice of
properties that may be available to them in the warmer
months. Therefore, the demand is effectively higher. Talk
to anyone on our team today about how to market your
property and achieve the very best price in the winter.
And to tempt you even more we are running a very
enticing and effective marketing campaign for a heavily
discounted rate.
List your property with us during winter and
take advantage of nearly $3000 of intense
and high profile marketing for a low, low
price of only $1995 including Auctioneer fees.
WIN THIS BOOK
ENTER TO
Devotion
by Louisa Young
From the bestselling author of My Dear, I Wanted to
Tell You and The Heroes’ Welcome, Louisa Young’s
Devotion is a novel of family, love, race and politics
set during the electric change of the 1930s. Tom loves
Nenna. Nenna loves her father. Her father loves Mussolini.
Ideals and convictions are not always so clear in the murky years
between the end of the First World War and the beginning of the Second. For Tom
and Kitty Locke, children of the damaged WW1 generation, visiting their cousin
Nenna in Rome is a pure joy. For their adoptive parents Nadine and Riley, though,
the ground is still shifting underfoot. Nobody knew in 1919 that the children they
were bearing would be just ripe for the next war in 1939; nobody knew, in 1935,
the implications of an Italian Jewish family supporting Mussolini. Meanwhile Peter
Locke and Mabel Zachary have found each other again together in London, itself a
city reborn but riddled with its own intolerances. As the heat rises across Europe,
voices grow louder and everyone must brace once more to decide what should
bring them together, and what must drive them apart.
WIN
THIS BOOK
Barkskins
by Annie Proulx
The latest novel from the bestselling and prize-winning author of ‘The Shipping
News’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’. In the late seventeenth century two illiterate
woodsmen, Rene Sel and Charles Duquet, make their way from Northern France
to New France to seek a living. Bound to a feudal lord, a “seigneur,” for three
years in exchange for land, they suffer extraordinary hardship, always in awe of
the forest they are charged with clearing, sometimes brimming with dreams of
its commercial potential. Rene marries an Indian healer, and they have children,
mixing the blood of two cultures. Duquet travels the globe and back, starting a
logging company that will prosper for generations. Proulx tells the stories of the
children, grandchildren, and descendants of these two lineages, the Sels and the
Duquets, as well as the descendants of their allies and foes, as they travel back
to Europe, to China, to New England, always in quest of a livelihood or a fortune,
or fleeing stunningly brutal conditions-accidents, pestilence, Indian attacks, the
revenge of rivals. In this feat of astonishing imagination, Proulx’s inimitable genius
is her creation of characters who are so vivid-in their greed, lust, vengefulness,
sorrow, compassion and hope-that we follow them with fierce attention. Annie
Proulx is one of the most formidable writers of our time, and Barkskins is the story
she has been writing all her life, a magnificent American novel.
SPORTS
Football season begins
FIRST KICKS: The Ferrymead Bays first kicks programme
and their coaches all squeezed in for a group photo on the
weekend. Every Saturday morning more than 120 children
take part in the first kicks and fun football programmes held at
Ferrymead Park.
Banks Peninsula’s peculiar season
• Fraser Walker-Pearce
IT’S BEEN a peculiar season
for Banks Peninsula’s top rugby
team, with surgeries, a helicopter,
and an injured assistant coach.
Peninsula are fast approaching
their club day on Saturday, although
some players might need
a door or two to be held open.
The club’s first team has experienced
three surgery-requiring
injuries in the first nine games.
The first was a head injury,
which required the assistance of a
helicopter to transport the player
to hospital. The second was a dislocated
hip, which required going
under the knife.
But the most recent was even
stranger.
Assistant coach Ben Skelton
had a history of playing for the
club but, since his retirement
from rugby, had taken to the
HARSH SCRUMS: Banks Peninsula have lost three players to season ending injuries, including
their assistant coach.
sidelines.
But, two weeks ago when Peninsula
played Lincoln at home in
Little River, the 42 year-old volunteered
to go on for the last few
minutes because the side were a
man down.
Head coach Michael Wilson
said he was surprised at how fast
he had volunteered to go on.
“He was the assistant coach
for the side with me and we were
slightly short, so he decided to
have the last few minutes against
Lincoln at home,” he said.
But after just two minutes in
the tight head prop position,
Skelton “blew his hamstring”.
Not only did the hamstring
give in, it was torn off the bone.
But that didn’t stop him from
joining one more scrum, Wilson
said.
“He did pack down for a final
scrum after that, he just hopped
his way to the scrum and after
that the full time whistle went.”
Last week Skelton had surgery
to “re-attach the hamstring” to
his leg.
“He’s just got out of surgery last
Thursday to reconnect it. He’ll
be out for weeks and months just
in rehab. I’m pretty sure that will
cement the retirement,” Wilson
said.
The final game of the first
round for Peninsula will be at
home on club day against Rolleston.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Tips for untreated
hearing loss
Hearing is a sense that many of us
take for granted. Throughout our lives, we
subject our ears to loud sounds–music,
power tools, lawn mowers, air travel–
without using ear protection. regrettably,
this can cause hearing loss. also, the
natural aging process generally results
in hearing loss. even certain illnesses
and medications can adversely affect our
hearing. Unfortunately, hearing loss that
occurs from such causes is permanent.
The good news is, even if you already
have a little hearing loss, it’s never too
late to preserve your hearing for the
years ahead. The first thing you can do is
protect your ears in noisy environments.
also, avoid using cotton swabs to clean
your ears. and, make it a priority to get
a baseline hearing screening to see if
hearing loss has already occurred.
if hearing loss is found during your
hearing evaluation, it could be due to
excess ear wax or infection. This type of
hearing loss is reversible. if hearing loss
stems from chronic exposure to loud
noise, aging, or certain illnesses and
medications, hearing aids are the best way
to preserve your good hearing.
The great news about today’s hearing
aids is how small and easy to wear they
are. Modern digital hearing aids use
super-tiny microprocessor technology–
making them virtually invisible when
worn. Hearing aids can help almost all
degrees of hearing loss–from a little to a
lot. and, by stimulating your brain with
sound that might not otherwise reach it,
hearing aids help keep your brain active,
which lowers your risk for cognitive
diseases, such as dementia.
if you suspect you may have hearing
loss, don’t ignore it. neglecting a hearing
loss can have a snowball effect–making it
grow bigger, faster than necessary.
Here are 10 ways you can limit hearing
damage and preserve good hearing:
1. Understand the sound levels of the
noises in your environment.
2. Learn about proper ear protection.
There are many kinds on the market
today, ranging from custom ear molds to
foam plugs and more.
3. Put physical distance between you
and loud noise when it is present. if
possible, stand at an angle from the noise,
not directly in front of it.
4. Take breaks when you are exposed
to noise.
5. When listening to music through
headphones or earbuds, keep the volume
low-to-medium.
6. Know the signs of hearing loss, and
measure yourself against them.
7. schedule a baseline hearing
evaluation. Hearing loss is on the rise
among Baby Boomers and young people.
it’s never too early to get your hearing
checked, but don’t wait past age 50.
8. Have your hearing evaluated by a
professional licensed by your state.
9. if you have hearing loss caused by a
reversible condition, take steps to
correct it.
10. if any permanent hearing loss is
diagnosed, choose hearing aids to slow it
down, and preserve good hearing.
it’s never too early to get your
hearing checked, but don’t wait
past age 50.
