Timeball station
rebuild project
placed on hold
• By Bridget Rutherford
WORK TO rebuild Lyttelton
Timeball Station has been
delayed until at least the end of
the year while nearby roadworks
are completed.
Heritage New Zealand was to
begin rebuilding the timeball
tower, mechanism and flagpole
of the category 1 heritage building
next month.
But the rebuild project has
been put on hold to avoid
conflict with the road works on
Sumner Rd and Reserve Tce,
which are being carried out now.
Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure
Rebuild Team is
repairing earthquake damaged
retaining walls on Reserve Tce,
which is scheduled to be completed
by the end of the year.
Work is continuing on the
Lyttelton end of Sumner Rd,
making access difficult to the
timeball site.
Southern Region general
manager Sheila Watson said the
Heritage New Zealand Board
had made the decision to put
work on hold to put the community
first.
“Residents in the immediate
area will already be constrained
in getting to and from their
homes by the road works and we
don’t want to add to that with
activity on the site.”
She said the stone masonry
needed the use of traditional
lime mortar and render, and
would need to be done outside
winter to ensure proper curing.
“As a result, the timing of construction
would need to ensure
that stone masonry work could
be undertaken in the spring and
summer months.”
Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Community
Board deputy chairwoman
Christine Wilson said
everyone wanted to see the timeball
rebuilt, but the residents
needed to come first.
DELAYED:
Lyttelton
Timeball
Station’s rebuild
has been
pushed back to
avoid disturbing
nearby
residents.
think it’s common sense that it’s
delayed.”
Built in 1876, Lyttelton Timeball
Station provided ships in
Lyttelton Harbour with a timekeeping
service. It marked noon
by dropping the timeball from
the tower.
It was demolished following
the June 2011 earthquake.
The original residence at the
station would not be rebuilt.
In the mean time, the site was
secure and the heritage fabric
which was deconstructed five
years ago was safely stored away.
A public fundraising push to
raise the remaining $500,000
of the $3.5million needed to
rebuild part of the original
station has also been pushed
back.
Sumner’s centurion
Lawrence Babe played his 100th match for Sumner on
Saturday during his team’s 65-31 victory over Shirley at St
Leonards Park, scoring a try in the process. In another feat, the
previous week Sumner first five-eighth Nik Cumming cracked
100 personal points for the season, and on Saturday brought
his total up to 131.
It has been a bad week for fires.
A woman had a lucky escape last
week when her car burst into
flames near the Hilltop Tavern.
The following day a Birdlings
Flat man’s house was extensively
damaged after a fire started in his
chimney. Check out page 5.
The youngest community
board member in the city is so
disillusioned with both the city
council and Mayor Lianne Dalziel
after one term he does not want to
go for re-election. See the article
on page 4.
Meanwhile readers are still
fired up, on page 11, about the St
Andrews Hill and Bridle Path Rds
intersection.
Finally, Lyttelton Festival of
Lights is back this weekend. It is
just over the hill from me, so I’ll
be checking it out. Hope to see you
there.
Have a great week.
Seawall to get steps
• By Bridget Rutherford
STEPS WILL be installed near
Beachville Reserve for water
access after Redcliffs residents
lobbied for new ones.
The city council and Stronger
Christchurch Infrastructure
Rebuild Team are rebuilding a
seawall along Beachville Rd after
the original was destroyed in
the February 2011 earthquake.
There used to be steps at the
reserve that were well used by
swimmers, kayakers
and beach
goers, however
they had not been
reinstated.
But after
requests from
residents, SCIRT
is now planning the construction
and installation of a new set
of steps at the southern end of
the new seawall.
The steps would traverse over
the rocks to the beach.
The new steps were being designed,
and the cost had not yet
been finalised, SCIRT executive
general manager Ian Campbell
(above) said.
Redcliffs Residents’ Association
had lobbied for the steps
to be reinstated because it was
worried there was a lack of
water access, and people may
injure themselves trying to
climb over the rocks.
Secretary Pat McIntosh
said water access was
“fundamental” in a seaside
suburb and residents would be
appreciative.
She said without the steps at
Beachville Reserve, safe water
access was only available about
800m away at Redcliffs Park, or
at Christchurch Yacht Club in
Moncks Bay.
“Quite a number of residents
have said to us ‘what’s happening
with the steps?’ It’s an issue
people are quite concerned
about.”
NAMES SUGGESTED
The city council received more
than 130 name suggestions for
the new Sumner community
centre, library and museum.
Submissions on the names
closed on Sunday and the best
suggestions will be shortlisted
so people can vote on their
favourite from Monday to
July 3. Strong themes included
beach related names, Maori
suggestions.
BUS STOP DECISION
The Lyttelton-Mt Herbert
Community Board will decide
today whether to approve the
relocation of a bus stop on
Norwich Quay. The stop would
move to the southern side of
Norwich Quay, about 7m east
of its intersection with Sutton
Quay. The current stop, which
is west of Sutton Quay, needs
to move to make way for a
signalised pedestrian crossing.
TAGGERS STRIKE
Lyttelton had 18 graffiti incidents
over April and May, city council
data shows. The data, which was
provided to the Lyttelton-Mt
Herbert Community Board, also
showed Diamond Harbour had
three reported incidents, and
Homes wanted for
exchange students
AN exchange programme
is asking for Christchurch
families to open their
doors to international
students.
Student Exchange
Australia New Zealand
will be sending high
school-aged children to
Christchurch, from as
close as Australia, and
as far away as Brazil and
France. But homes are
needed for the students.
The group is a not-forprofit
organisation that
is registered with all state
and territory departments
of education around
Australia and with the
Ministry of Education in
New Zealand.
This month, they will
be receiving students
from Australia, Brazil,
Denmark, France, Finland,
Germany, Japan and
Switzerland.
Their new arrivals
plan to live with a host
family and attend a local
school for three, five or 10
months.
Hosting an exchange
student allows local
families to experience a
foreign culture first-hand,
be exposed to a new language
and pass on parts
of their own culture.
All students have at
least basic levels of English,
and would attend a
school in the local area.
The group of students
are interested in a wide
variety of hobbies.
Australian-Aboriginal
student Jaydah said she is
looking forward to living
in New Zealand and is
hoping to learn about
the Maori culture and to
adapt to living in a different
environment.
Denmark native Caroline,
16, has been to New
Zealand before and loved
it so much she
now wants to live here
and experience the
culture as an exchange
student.
Nathan, 16, is a French
student who enjoys
school, tennis, hand-ball
and skiing. He loves
hiking in nature and is
looking forward
to discovering New
Young leader calls it quits
• By Tom Doudney
THE CITY’S youngest community
board member, Joe Davies, will not
seek re-election in October, saying
he is disillusioned with local body
politics.
The 22-year-old Hagley-Ferrymead
Community Board member said he
was disappointed in the performance
of the city council and Mayor Lianne
Dalziel.
“Under her leadership she is now
looking to sell hundreds of millions
of dollars’ worth of public assets, we
are seeing increases in rates, we are
seeing power taken away from community
boards and overall it has been
a pretty disappointing experience in
many respects,” he said.
“It has been a great honour representing
the people of the ward and I
have really enjoyed getting to know
the community groups and the residents
associations, but in terms of the
council itself, it is a corporation and
its interests are not of the people’s.”
A spokeswoman for the mayor
said Ms Dalziel had spoken with Mr
Davies and understood his concerns.
“She is very sorry to lose him from
the Hagley-Ferrymead Community
Board,” the spokeswoman said.
It is the second community board
member to leave local body politics
this term.
Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Community
CALLING IT QUITS: Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board member
Joe Davies said he will not stand for re-election in October as he is
disappointed in the performance of the city council and Mayor Lianne
Dalziel.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
Board deputy chairwoman Jane
Broughton resigned from the board
in December 2014 because she believed
the city council was running a
poor operation.
She said it was wasting money
and operating with a dysfunctional
structure.
Mr Davies was elected in 2013,
when he was 19.
He made the decision not to seek a
second term after The People’s Choice
group opted to back real estate
company owner, Vicki Tahau-Paton,
rather than Mr Davies to stand for
the city council in the Christchurch
Central Ward.
Mr Davies said he was planning on
going back into politics in the future,
and may stand for Parliament.
Kick: The True Story of Kick Kennedy, JFK’s Forgotten Sister and
the Heir to Chatsworth By Paula Byrne
The remarkable life of the vivacious, clever – and forgotten – Kennedy sister,
who charmed the English aristocracy and was almost erased from her family
history. Kick was Joe Kennedy’s favourite child and Jack’s favourite sister.
Spirited, vivacious and quick-witted, her charm was legendary and with her
jokes, effervescence and ease of manner she became a star amongst friends,
family and the press. When Kick sailed to Britain in 1938 after her father had
been appointed US Ambassador in London she was presented at court as a debutante,
attended all the best parties and was a house-guest at the finest country estates. She was
described as ‘the best thing America ever sent us’.Kick was not conventionally beautiful,
but men swarmed around her. As she mingled with aristocrats, politicians, writers and
artists, everyone was drawn to her refreshing lack of stuffiness. In this book, which is as
lively and vivacious as its subject, best-selling author Paula Byrne uses recently released
documents to tell for the first time this cinematic story of the meeting of American and
British aristocracy – the Kennedys, the Devonshires, their friends such as the Churchills,
Astors and Mitfords, the social whirl of pre-War life, Kick’s work for the Red Cross and as
a journalist – and the religious tension that arose from her marriage to Billy. She kicked
against family, faith and country. She was a rebel to the end – which came all too soon,
when she was just 28. This wonderful book restores her story at last with all its energy,
wit and tragedy.
War Blacks: The extraordinary story of New Zealand’s WWI All Blacks
By Matt Elliott
War Blacks is the extraordinary story of New Zealand’s national sport and The Great
War, and the effect each had on the other. Published to coincide with the 125th
anniversary of the founding of the NZ Rugby Football Union. Rugby and war have played
major roles in the forging of a national New Zealand identity. This is the story of where
both met, on the hot sands of Egypt and the muddy fields of Britain and France during
World War I. War Blacks presents for the first time the stories of more than 90 men who
had been, were, or would be All Blacks and their 1914-18 wartime service, wearing the
double silver fern of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force or the badges of other nations.
While first-class and senior rugby in New Zealand came to a halt as the war progressed
– “fit to play, fit to fight” – the game played an important role in the recreation and
morale of our troops. The mighty rivalry between the All Blacks and the Springboks can
be traced to this period. When the “Invincibles” were touring the Northern Hemisphere
in 1924-25, the ex-soldiers in the team made a point of visiting the battlefields they
had fought on only a few years earlier, as well as the graves of their fallen comrades.
War Blacks is the moving - and at times humorous - story of our national sport and The
Great War, and the effect each had on the other.
Hilltop blaze claims car
• By Bridget Rutherford
A WOMAN’S Audi A4 station
wagon burst into flames near
Akaroa last week after she pulled
over because it began smoking.
Firefighters from Little River
and Akaroa were called to the
blaze near the Hilltop Tavern
on Christchurch Akaroa Rd last
Tuesday evening.
Little River chief fire officer
David Irving said the woman
had been driving over the hill
in the Audi when she noticed
smoke coming from the bonnet.
She pulled over and got out of
the vehicle, and it caught alight,
Mr Irving said.
“By the time we got there it
was just a burning shell. It was
difficult to put out because the
tank was full of fuel.”
THe exact cause of the fire
was unknown and no one was
injured, he said.
THe following night, a
Birdlings Flat man sat in his
house for about 20min before
realising his roof had caught fire
and filled with smoke.
THree fire trucks and 21
firefighters from Little River and
Lincoln battled the blaze at the
small Coates Rd house at about
5.45pm last Wednesday.
Mr Irving said the fire
looked to have started in the
BLAZE: A woman’s Audi A4 station wagon burst into flames
chimney, and spread throughout
the roof.
When fire crews arrived they
could see significant smoke
coming out from under the eaves
of the house, he said.
“THe occupant was home, he
was unaware for probably 20min
that there was any problem. He
was in the front of the house, and
went back to the rear where the
fire was and saw the room filling
with smoke.”
Mr Irving said he then called
both the Fire Service and
neighbours, who attempted to
put the fire out, before fire crews
Woman
charged with
wilful damage
• By Bridget Rutherford
A 29-YEAR-OLD woman has
been charged with wilful damage
after throwing a metal road
sign through a large window at
Akaroa’s Madeira Hotel.
Senior Constable Anita Osborne
said the woman had been
consuming alcohol early Saturday
morning at the hotel before getting
into an argument with people
there.
She then became “agitated” and
threw the metal road sign, which
had been on the road, through the
large window that looks out onto
the car park at about 2.30am.
She also broke a nearby letterbox
and tried to use it to do
further damage.
Senior Constable Osborne
said a number of people tried to
restrain the woman before police
arrived to arrest her.
“People there were trying to get
her to go away.”
The woman was charged with
wilful damage, and police were
considering further charges, Senior
Constable Osborne said.
She would not say what the
further charges were.
The woman would appear in the
district court on July 1.
Family business a tradition
A NEW shop in Sumner has
strong links with the seaside
suburb’s retailing past.
Rita Lovell-Smith has just
opened up a new gift, toys and
homeware shop, Dear Prudence,
on Wakefield Ave, which is
named after her grandmother
Prue Lovell-Smith.
Prue ran The Village Junkshop,
a few doors along in
Wakefield Ave, for more than 35
years.
Rita said the name of her
new shop was a tribute to her
late grandmother, and was also
named after The Beatles song
Dear Prudence.
That is not the only family
connection.
Dear Prudence is similar to
another local business, Red Fish
Blue Fish, a gift shop opened by
her aunt, Rebecca Lovell-Smith,
in 1996.
After selling Red Fish Blue
Fish, which sat alongside The
Village Junkshop, Rebecca went
on to open Blackbird in Heathcote
Valley, and Lyttelton’s God
Save the Queen.
Rita said Dear Prudence was
a mix of the three shops, with a
bit of her own personal touch.
“I used to love the junkshop
and Red Fish Blue Fish when I
“I loved all the interesting and
beautiful things they stocked,
but also that sense of being able
to discover something different,
of fossicking around.
“I’m really excited at being
able to do the same thing here
and Rebecca has been fantastic,
helping me stock the shop and
giving advice.”
As well as the new stock gifts,
toys, household items, posters,
cards Dear Prudence sells a
small range of secondhand
books and records.
Dear Prudence is open
from Tuesday to Friday, 11am-
Bigger lights festival
• By Bridget Rutherford
THE ANNUAL Lyttelton Festival
of Lights celebration begins
this weekend, with nine days of
activities and events planned.
The festival will run from Saturday
until June 27, and will include
light installations, puppet shows,
the annual street party, fireworks,
stalls, music and more.
Co-ordinator Claire Coates said
a new feature this year was Light.
Creativity. Celebration. – which
is a series of light installations
around the suburb.
She said it would be like little
pockets of creativity popping up
for people to look at.
“We wanted to create some surprises
for this year’s festival and
we are pleased this project and the
programme of events throughout
the week is going to tick all the
boxes for everyone.”
One of the works will be a light
sculpture by Corsair Bay artists
Lillianna Sequira and Mario Luz
and their five-year-old daughter,
Eva.
Other works will include light
projections by Jason Greig, a light
display by Maree Henry in the
window of Henry Trading on
London St, and a window display
by Bettina Evans in the Lyttelton
Information Centre.
A series of puppet shows at St
Saviour’s at Holy Trinity will be
on, and the giant puppets will
re-appear at the street party on
June 24.
Lyttelton Arts Factory will celebrate
its grand re-opening with
a cabaret show at its new home in
the school hall on Friday before
the festival begins.
“We’re just really looking forward
to another great event,” Ms
Coates said.
Wharf gets upgrade
A $1 MILLION extension
of Akaroa’s visitor centre
will be built on the wharf
to cater for increased visitor
numbers.
Black Cat Cruises will
remove the old cold stores
which are part of its cruises
centre, to allow a larger
building with more retail,
customer and staff facilities.
It hopes to have the
extension completed by
September.
The new centre will
include environmentally
friendly and power saving
features with better wheelchair
access.
A wood pallet burner will
heat water for the showers
that visitors use after swimming
with the dolphins in
the harbour, and new toilets
and changing facilities will
be built.
Chief executive Paul
was the biggest investment
for Black Cat Cruises since
the purchase of its flagship
vessel, known as Black Cat,
in 1999.
MT PLEASANT residents are
worried a new kindergarten to be
built in front of their properties will
block their estuary views and clog the
car parks outside their homes.
Kidsfirst Kindergartens wants to
rebuild its kindergarten on McCormacks
Bay Rd next to the new community
centre.
But residents living behind the site
voiced their concerns about the plan
at a hearing last week.
The hearing was adjourned so
Kidsfirst could submit a written right
of reply within 10 days.
Commissioner David Mountfort
has until next Wednesday to issue a
decision on whether it can progress
with plans to build the kindergarten.
In their submissions, residents said
their estuary views would be blocked,
a lack of car parking on-site would
They were concerned that plans for
the new facility included the capacity
of children increasing from 30 to 50.
It was also required to provide nine
car parks – five for visitors and four
for staff – but there were only six car
parks provided, plus one wheelchair
park in the plans, prompting concerns
staff would have to park on the road
instead.
Kidsfirst chief executive Sherryll
Wilson said as the hearing was
ongoing it would be inappropriate to
comment until the commissioner had
made a decision.
The original kindergarten was
damaged in the February 2011 earthquake,
and later demolished.
Liquor licence applications
National MP
based in the Port
Hills Nuk Korako
asks whether
it is time to
tweak the
liquor licensing
application
process
Being an MP means
constituents come to me about
a wide variety of local issues.
One that has recently been
brought to my attention is the
existing process for viewing
liquor licensing applications in
Christchurch.
We can’t currently view liquor
licensing applications online
– instead we must make an
appointment with the Alcohol
Licensing Team and visit the
council to read the application
in person. Several residents
have mentioned to me that this
process is unnecessarily arduous
and that they would like to be
able to view the documents on
the city council’s website instead.
Numerous city councils
around the country already
do this. For instance, current
applications can be viewed in
their entirety on the Dunedin,
Wellington and Tauranga city
council websites. I am interested
in seeing whether it is possible
for our council to do something
similar. Putting licensing
applications online simply makes
it easier for us all to access this
information and to be aware
of what’s happening in our
neighbourhoods.
Let me be clear that this isn’t
about making it harder for
applicants to obtain, alter or
renew their licences. I know
many of our local businesses,
clubs and events sell or supply
alcohol, and they take their
responsibilities under the Sale
and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012
seriously. They are part of what
makes Port Hills such a vibrant
electorate to live.
This is simply about ensuring
that those residents and
community groups who meet
the threshold of having a ‘greater
interest’ in new licences and licence
renewals don’t face unnecessary
barriers in participating in the
application process.
I have already spoken with
city councillor Paul Lonsdale
about this issue, but would also
like to hear your thoughts. You
can get in touch with me at nuk.
Inspiration acknowledged
Banks Peninsula
is unique.
We are different from the plains
in so many ways including our
landscape, weather, water resources,
biodiversity and people.
One of many individuals who,
by caring for the landscape, is
really making a difference is
Peter Ramsden. Peter’s turangawaiwai
is Koukourarata/Port
Levy or in his words, heaven.
Peter was recently named a finalist
in the national Green Ribbon
Awards for his contribution
to his rūnanga/people and the
environment. Peter’s inspiration
and influence extends throughout
Ngāi Tahu’s rohē but his influence
is most noticeable close
to home at Koukourarata.
Peter has worked for a number
of years with local farmer
Tim Coop and his family on
an extensive riparian fencing
and planting project along the
local stream. A block of 87
ha of native bush at the top of
the catchment, the Kakanui
Reserve, has been set aside and
covenanted. An area of tōtara
has been planted close to the
marae for future carvers and
various varieties of flax planted
for the weavers.
But the most inspiring thing
for me is Peter’s commitment
to providing opportunities for
young and old alike to learn
in a warm and welcoming
environment. Peter reminds me
that it is people who make the
difference.
Take a trip over to heaven one
contribution to
his rūnanga/
people and the
environment.
we hear the environment being
talked about, but what does it
mean?
The word is a contraction of
“biological diversity”. It refers to
the variety of living organisms
within a particular ecosystem
like a stream, a wetland or a
paddock. These living organisms
may be plants, animals,
insects or birds and together
they provide the foundation of
life upon which we all depend.
In Maori the word “mauri”
encapsulates the idea of the life
force in nature which is akin to
a healthy, breathing ecosystem.
BAY HARBOUR
PAGE 11
Bay Harbour News asked
its readers what changes
they would like made to the
St Andrews Hill and Bridle
Path Rds intersection:
Sandy Cassels, of
Lyttelton – Could there not be
three lanes – one for Heathcote
traffic turning left into Ferry Rd,
two for hill traffic turning left
into Ferry Rd and three for those
turning right to Sumner?
Move the island in the
middle a little to create more
space. Cyclists might need to use
the footpath for turning left and
the road for turning right.
If lights are installed, they
would need to have a longer
green phase so everyone can
get a go at moving on and not
creating a back log of traffic.
Richard Perrett – I travel
down St Andrews Hill Rd
every day in rush hour and
have had no difficulty using the
intersection in a safe manner.
Drivers on Bridal Path Rd
are generally courteous and let
traffic in from St Andrews Hill
Rd. What I do have a problem
with are the drivers in your
picture who leave large gaps
between them and the next car.
If these drivers bunched up,
more cars could safely get out
from St Andrews Hill Rd and
flow would improve. Lights are
unlikely to improve traffic flow
from St Andrews Hill Rd during
peak times and will impede
Previously
United Travel
traffic flow at other times while
incurring a significant cost.
Christchurch has an obsession
with traffic lights which outside
of rush hours only add time to
journeys.
If drivers consider it dangerous
turning into Bridal Path Rd
from Sumner, they should slow
down, open their eyes and
exercise some judgement instead
of making it someone else’s
problem. Perhaps a warning sign
for traffic turning from Sumner
into Bridal Path Rd may reduce
the risk?
Readers respond to
Richard Suggate’s Soap
Box column about the
Diamond Harbour Ferry:
Carolyn Nicol, of Diamond
Harbour
For many years preearthquake
I used the bus and
ferry services and loved it.
When returning home I would
catch the express bus to Lyttelton
and this bus was guaranteed
to catch the ferry. Since the
earthquakes the express bus
has been removed, Colombo St
is congested at peak times, so
coming home via the bus and
ferry services has just become
unworkable for me.
Lyttelton Port of Christchurch
appears to have a plan to make
the bus/ferry connection as
unpleasant as possible – no
doubt to encourage ferry and bus
users that a shift of the ferry will
be better. I don’t think the ferry
links well with the bus timetable.
National List MP and
Rapaki Runanga member
Nuk Korako responds to
Archie Laird’s letter on
June 1 about dredging in
Lyttelton Harbour:
You’re correct that dredging
here is not new, but Rapaki
Runanga’s concern is where the
dredge spoil is dumped.
The runanga would like to see
the dump site located further
offshore. For years we’ve seen
our mahinga kai beds desecrated
by mud carried up the harbour
from dredging residue created by
inner harbour dumping.
The only mahinga kai shellfish
beds now left are cockles, and
these are already at risk because
of mud build-up. Paua and
mussels have now disappeared
from our kainga foreshore.
Depositing dredge spoil away
from the harbour will strike the
appropriate balance between
protecting our harbour as a
mahinga kai and ensuring it
remains a gateway port.
The city council was
asking people to submit
ideas on what Sumner’s
new community centre,
library and museum should
be named. Bay Harbour
News asked its readers
what they would like the
facility to be called:
Maria Simmonds – The name
I suggest for the new Sumner
Community Centre is The
Sumner Hub.
This is the name given to
the centre created at the old
Sumner School hall during
the earthquakes. The hub
was the place where you could
get information, water, public
meetings were held, support in
many forms including the tent
school and care for the elderly.
Many of these services have
continued when the Sumner
community group moved to the
old police station. It will resonant
with many people as it was the
place where we all came together
to help each other out during
those difficult months and years.
Bay Harbour News asked
its readers whether they
thought Recliffs needed
more social housing after
the city council began
demolishing Avonheath
Courts:
Gerard Liddell – The social
housing at Redcliffs was an
exemplar of good planning. The
residents are home enjoying the
outlook from their location far
more than those in the majority
of houses in the area that are
vacant for most of the daytime
working hours.
In addition, the residents
of social housing have more
mobility limitations and the and
the easy access to the Redcliffs
shops is more valuable for them.
DIAMOND HARBOUR School
year 7 and 8 pupils have been
working with new entrants to
demonstrate learning habits.
Together, the pupils worked
on a presentation to show their
love of a chosen topic.
They came up with some
questions, researched, planned
and put together a final piece
which would showcase their new
learning to the young pupils.
Some groups headed straight
to iPads and laptops, others to
the library, some to the construction
areas and others to the
art resources.
Presentations included slideshows
about the extinct shark
species Megalodon, models of
race cars with full steering, posters
about dolphins, a quiz about
cheetahs and a movie about
Lego. But there is more to come.
SPORTS
International regattas
for young sailors
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
TWO TALENTED sailors will
use their friendly competitions
in Charteris Bay as training
when they travel to international
regattas next month.
Will Hadfield qualified for
the Optimist North American
Championship in Antigua, and
David Buchanan, who qualified
for the International Optimist
Dinghy Association World
Championship in Portugal.
The boys qualified for their
respective international races
in March through the Optimist
Nationals, which were held in
Auckland.
Will’s mum Becky Hadfield
said Will and David have always
had a friendly rivalry when racing
for their club.
“It’s a great wee rivalry, and
it’s always better when there are
equal people to race against - it’s
a healthy rivalry . . . it’s tight
between them mostly. David has
it this year, he’s slightly ahead
because he’s going to the worlds,
but Will’s still going to the North
American regatta,” she said.
Will, 13, will be representing
New Zealand for the second
time next month. His first competition
was last year when Mrs
Hadfield travelled with him to
Doha, Qatar.
AT SPEED: Will Hadfield,
13, will travel to a North
American yachting regatta
next month.
“Last year I went to Doha with
him. But this year (his) dad is
going with him, and I’ve missed
out, but I’m not too worried, I
think he’ll make it next year as
well,” Mrs Hadfield said.
She said both boys had trained
hard for the past few months,
and are both in the top 25 sailors
aged under 15 in the country.
“They’re both in the top 25
sailors in the country. David’s
currently sixth and Will’s 13th,”
she said.
Both Will and David are
fundraising before they leave for
their respective competitions,
and have set up givealittle pages
to help them get there.
Big win caps milestone
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
SUMNER celebrated Lawrence
Babe’s milestone 100th match on
Saturday with a 65-31 thrashing
of Shirley at St Leonard’s Square.
Babe has had a stellar season
for Sumner. He has been
awarded seven most valuable
player awards, ninth equal with
University’s Marty McKenzie
for the most MVP awards in
the Hawkins Division 1 Cup
competition.
Babe celebrated his milestone
against Shirley with a try.
“I’m pretty stoked to have
made it to 100 games for the
club, and it was pretty good to
get the win as well,” Babe said.
Another notable Sumner
feat has seen first five-eighth
Nik Cumming charge past the
100-point mark for the season.
Cumming chalked up his century
against Christchurch two
Saturdays ago, and on the weekend
scored another 23 points to
take his tally to 131.
He scored two tries, kicked
five conversions and a penalty
goal against Shirley.
He is now only 32 points
behind points tally leader High
School Old Boys’ first fiveeighth
Jarred Percival’s total of
163.
Cumming said he was unaware
of his personal points
tally until only a few weeks ago.
“I only found out in the last
few weeks (that he was so close),
so it was a bit of a shock really. I
MILESTONE: Sumner celebrated Lawrence Babe’s 100th
match for the club in style when they crushed Shirley 65-31.
don’t focus on it, but it’s just the
way we play, we try and build
scores, and that can mean we
kick for points often,” he said.
But it’s not just penalties
Cumming scores, he has also
scored six tries, meaning he’s
the Hawkins Division 1 Cup
competition’s seventh equal top
try scorer.
Cumming will head back to
the West Coast at the end of the
season, to join back up with his
team for the start of the Mitre
10 Heartland Championship,
which kicks off at the end of
August.
Sumner currently sit in ninth
place on the competition ladder,
with four wins from 11 games.
Surf lifesaving family dominate awards
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
A FAMILY of surf lifesavers has been
recognised in a recent regional awards
evening.
The Jamieson family, consisting of
husband and wife Craig and Tisha,
and son Will, were all on stage at one
point to receive an award in Saturday’s
Canterbury Awards of Excellence
evening at Mashina Lounge.
Mr Jamieson received the Lifeguard
of the Year award. An award he said
was all down to the role others played
working towards a common goal.
“In reality, I have earned this award
on the back of a lot of other volunteers
with a common goal, so people can
enjoy our beaches and return home
after a great Kiwi day with everyone
intact,” he said.
Mrs Jamieson and son, Will, were
on stage later in the evening to receive
the award on behalf of the Taylors
Mistake club for the Rescue of the
Year, performed by Will in February.
The evening also saw coach of the
year jointly won by Sumner’s Mark
Robberds and Waimairi’s Janice
Murdoch.
Mr Jamieson, who has been a part of
the Taylors Mistake club for 16 years,
said being named the lifeguard of the
year is a huge achievement.
“Hell yeah, for me it’s a huge
achievement. But to be honest I’m just
happy to do the job really . . . I was
just quite surprised when I won. I was
sitting with my wife, who had been
nominated for another award, and my
son, who was up for the junior sportsman
award, so it was quite special.
“Most of all it’s all those volunteers
who want to train as guards, who will
sit on a beach all day to keep others
safe. Behind these people are others
who fundraise, support their children,
manage clubs and seek funding in a
tight financial environment,” he said.
[EDITION DATE]
Revamped bottle store brings
modern convenience
to Lyttelton
Lyttelton’s only bottle store, Super
Liquor Lyttelton, has now been
completely refurbished. The result:
a bright, sophisticated liquor outlet
with a well-designed layout offering a full
range of beers, wines and spirits to suit all
budgets and requirements.
Located at 42 Norwich Quay, the former
Mondo Vino, which had been trading for
eight years under the ownership of Jean-
Pierre Ribotton, was purchased by Harjit
Singh in January this year and converted to a
Super Liquor outlet.
The conversion involved not merely a name
change, but a major revamp of the premises.
The opportunity to purchase the Lyttelton
business was too good to pass up, Harjit says,
even though the building required significant
investment to bring it up to the level of a
modern, customer-friendly Super Liquor
outlet.
That investment included the installation
of a new cool room, sleek new shelving units,
new carpeting and lighting, a new spirits area
and an extended wine area.
The store continued to trade during the
alteration work, and Harjit says customers
were very patient and tolerant, despite the
disruptions and mess.
The newly refurbished Lyttelton Super Liquor store on Norwich Quay
An extensive range of local and imported wines are available
“I would like to thank customers for their
patience and support during that time. It was
much appreciated,” he says.
The work took two months to complete,
which was a little longer than Harjit had
expected, but, as he says, the pressure on
tradespeople in Christchurch following the
earthquakes means that many jobs around
the city are taking longer than normal.
And he is thrilled with the finished job.
As are the customers.
“We have had great feedback from our
customers on the new store,” Harjit says, “and
I would also like to acknowledge Jean-Pierre,
business, I wouldn’t have had this opportunity
to come to Lyttelton.”
In addition to the store’s much-improved
interior, Super Liquor Lyttelton also has the
advantage of the legacy left by a previous
operation on the site – a petrol station. This
has provided a drive-through facility, enabling
customers to drive up to the door, pop in and
pick up their supplies and drive out again.
There is also an off-street parking area at the
front.
Super Liquor Lyttelton is open seven days
a week – 10am to 9pm Monday to Thursday,
10am to 10pm Friday and Saturday, and 10am
to 9pm Sunday.
Owner and manager offer
industry experience
The large new cool room now stocks local and European beers, plus a huge range of craft beers
Lyttelton Super Liquor Manager Gursharan Singh.
Lyttelton Super Liquor Operations Manager
Kuljinder Sandhu
An experienced operator in the
liquor industry, Super Liquor
Lyttelton owner Harjit Singh owns
five other Super Liquor outlets
around Christchurch. He says the bulk buying
power this provides enables him to offer very
competitive pricing, plus there are different
specials every week offering even more savings
for customers.
The store’s extensive selection of all types of
liquor includes the increasingly popular craft
beers.
“We have doubled our range of craft beers,
and we have every European beer you could
think of at very competitive prices.”
Super Liquor Lyttelton also welcomes
suggestions from customers on other products
they would like, and will do their best to
source them. Store manager Gursharan Singh
brings a wealth of experience to Lyttelton – he
was the manager at Woolston Super Liquor
for three years and is always pleased to chat to
customers about their preferences.
Super Liquor Lyttelton also supports the
community, such as helping with fundraising
for local groups.
“Our customers have shown their loyalty
to us, and that’s why we want to be part of the
Lyttelton community and help out where we
can,” Harjit says.
Pizza restaurant
offers cosy spot
for family fun
As it cools down into winter,
Winnies Ferrymead is there to
warm you and your family up with
a cosy, inviting environment and
arguably the tastiest Kiwi pizzas you will find
anywhere.
Now approaching eight years in the
neighbourhood, Winnies Ferrymead is proud
to be community-focused by sponsoring the
local sports teams, schools and events within
the area.
With the school holidays fast approaching,
Winnes Ferrymead suggests a great way to
keep children occupied for one day at least
is the Kids Pizza School, which is run during
the holidays. Kids love this highly enjoyable
activity, and the cost starts from only $10
per child.
A great Kids Menu also makes Winnies
Ferrymead a fun place to take the family
for lunch, dinner or anytime in between, as
they are open from 11.30am daily. The staff
are only too happy to make sure children
and parents have a great time while enjoying
delicious food.
Fundraiser nights at Winnies Ferrymead
have proved to be a very effective way for
clubs and other organisations to raise money
– earning up to $1000 per sitting. All you need
to do is sell the tickets, people come and feast,
and you walk away with cash for your sports
team, school or charity. These events are now
run on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and
Sunday nights. Give them a call to find out
more details.
Lunches at Winnies are great value, with a
Lunch Menu for $15 or under, including Salad
of the Day, Mini Winnie, Small Pizza and
Pasta of the Day. All ingredients are brought
in fresh and prepared on site, ensuring quality
and flavour. Nothing is off the shelf – it’s all
made with love, fresh for you daily.
Grout & Tile Specialists
When tiled surfaces are looking jaded
and tired, GroutPro provide a professional
uplift, “It looks just like new” a not unusual
response from the happy homeowner.
The chemical deep clean and turbo rinse
remove contaminants. The colourseal (89
colours available) of the groutlines revives
deep consistent colour. The difference
between before and after is unmissable.
Investing in a retiled floor is a worthy
upgrade, but two aspects add extra value.
Firstly an acid wash is often needed to
remove a leftover grout haze. Secondly,
for tiled areas to maintain their appeal,
the grout needs sealed. If not sealed,
the porous nature of grout means it can
quickly get dirt tracked in and spills
absorbed, particularly in kitchen areas.
Before selling their home, people often
spend time tidying up kitchens and
bathrooms in particular. Dealing with
unsightly grout and silicon and cracked
tiles ensure the house looks as good as
possible on sale day.
Testimonial
“I can’t begin to describe my delight when I opened my Clarity box. My husband
and I had described to Edwin what we wanted but this ring completely exceeded
our expectations. The craftsmanship is exquisite and detail faultless. As well as Edwin
and his team being extremely professional and genuinely caring about what we
wanted, they made the process fun. Thank you so much Edwin - we will be back!”
