Surf lifesaving family dominate awards
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
A FAMILY of surf lifesavers has been
recognised in a recent regional awards
evening.
The Jamieson family, consisting of
husband and wife Craig and Tisha,
and son Will, were all on stage at one
point to receive an award in Saturday’s
Canterbury Awards of Excellence
evening at Mashina Lounge.
Mr Jamieson received the Lifeguard
of the Year award. An award he said
was all down to the role others played
working towards a common goal.
“In reality, I have earned this award
on the back of a lot of other volunteers
with a common goal, so people can
enjoy our beaches and return home
after a great Kiwi day with everyone
intact,” he said.
Mrs Jamieson and son, Will, were
on stage later in the evening to receive
the award on behalf of the Taylors
Mistake club for the Rescue of the
Year, performed by Will in February.
The evening also saw coach of the
year jointly won by Sumner’s Mark
Robberds and Waimairi’s Janice
Murdoch.
Mr Jamieson, who has been a part of
the Taylors Mistake club for 16 years,
said being named the lifeguard of the
year is a huge achievement.
“Hell yeah, for me it’s a huge
achievement. But to be honest I’m just
happy to do the job really . . . I was
just quite surprised when I won. I was
sitting with my wife, who had been
son, who was up for the junior sportsman
award, so it was quite special.
“Most of all it’s all those volunteers
who want to train as guards, who will
sit on a beach all day to keep others
safe. Behind these people are others
who fundraise, support their children,
manage clubs and seek funding in a
tight financial environment,” he said.
