Three Akaroa landmarks and a Ferrymead house have been recognised in the Canterbury
Heritage Awards. A ceremony to announce the winners and highly-commended was held at
the newly-restored Great Hall at the Christchurch Arts Centre on Thursday. Akaroa’s Banksia
Cottage was highly commended in the Domestic Saved and Restored category. Work on
the cottage was carried out by Plane Tree Ltd. The Gaiety, which was repaired and officially
opened in March, was also highly-commended in the same category. The Banks Peninsula
War Memorial was repaired by Fulton Hogan after sustaining earthquake damage. The work
was commended. The memorial, which is owned by a trust rather than the city council or the
Returned and Services’ Association, was officially re-opened in October. Curragh House, in
Ferrymead, was highly-commended in the Heritage Tourism section. Christ’s College’s Miles
Warren Building, which is named after Governors Bay resident and architect Sir Miles Warren,
won the Future Heritage award.
