PAGE 16 BAY HARBOUR Wednesday June 15 2016 SPORTS International regattas for young sailors • By Fraser Walker-Pearce TWO TALENTED sailors will use their friendly competitions in Charteris Bay as training when they travel to international regattas next month. Will Hadfield qualified for the Optimist North American Championship in Antigua, and David Buchanan, who qualified for the International Optimist Dinghy Association World Championship in Portugal. The boys qualified for their respective international races in March through the Optimist Nationals, which were held in Auckland. Will’s mum Becky Hadfield said Will and David have always had a friendly rivalry when racing for their club. “It’s a great wee rivalry, and it’s always better when there are equal people to race against - it’s a healthy rivalry . . . it’s tight between them mostly. David has it this year, he’s slightly ahead because he’s going to the worlds, but Will’s still going to the North American regatta,” she said. Will, 13, will be representing New Zealand for the second time next month. His first competition was last year when Mrs Hadfield travelled with him to Doha, Qatar. AT SPEED: Will Hadfield, 13, will travel to a North American yachting regatta next month. “Last year I went to Doha with him. But this year (his) dad is going with him, and I’ve missed out, but I’m not too worried, I think he’ll make it next year as well,” Mrs Hadfield said. She said both boys had trained hard for the past few months, and are both in the top 25 sailors aged under 15 in the country. “They’re both in the top 25 sailors in the country. David’s currently sixth and Will’s 13th,” she said. Big win caps milestone • By Fraser Walker-Pearce SUMNER celebrated Lawrence Babe’s milestone 100th match on Saturday with a 65-31 thrashing of Shirley at St Leonard’s Square. Babe has had a stellar season for Sumner. He has been awarded seven most valuable player awards, ninth equal with University’s Marty McKenzie for the most MVP awards in the Hawkins Division 1 Cup competition. Babe celebrated his milestone against Shirley with a try. “I’m pretty stoked to have made it to 100 games for the club, and it was pretty good to get the win as well,” Babe said. Another notable Sumner feat has seen first five-eighth Nik Cumming charge past the 100-point mark for the season. Cumming chalked up his century against Christchurch two Saturdays ago, and on the weekend scored another 23 points to take his tally to 131. He scored two tries, kicked five conversions and a penalty goal against Shirley. He is now only 32 points behind points tally leader High School Old Boys’ first fiveeighth Jarred Percival’s total of 163. Cumming said he was unaware of his personal points tally until only a few weeks ago. “I only found out in the last few weeks (that he was so close), so it was a bit of a shock really. But it’s not just penalties Cumming scores, he has also scored six tries, meaning he’s the Hawkins Division 1 Cup competition’s seventh equal top try scorer. Cumming will head back to the West Coast at the end of the season, to join back up with his team for the start of the Mitre 10 Heartland Championship, which kicks off at the end of August.
