BAY HARBOUR
PAGE 11
Bay Harbour News asked
its readers what changes
they would like made to the
St Andrews Hill and Bridle
Path Rds intersection:
Sandy Cassels, of
Lyttelton – Could there not be
three lanes – one for Heathcote
traffic turning left into Ferry Rd,
two for hill traffic turning left
into Ferry Rd and three for those
turning right to Sumner?
Move the island in the
middle a little to create more
space. Cyclists might need to use
the footpath for turning left and
the road for turning right.
If lights are installed, they
would need to have a longer
green phase so everyone can
get a go at moving on and not
creating a back log of traffic.
Richard Perrett – I travel
down St Andrews Hill Rd
every day in rush hour and
have had no difficulty using the
intersection in a safe manner.
Drivers on Bridal Path Rd
are generally courteous and let
traffic in from St Andrews Hill
Rd. What I do have a problem
with are the drivers in your
picture who leave large gaps
between them and the next car.
If these drivers bunched up,
more cars could safely get out
from St Andrews Hill Rd and
flow would improve. Lights are
unlikely to improve traffic flow
from St Andrews Hill Rd during
peak times and will impede
Previously
United Travel
traffic flow at other times while
incurring a significant cost.
Christchurch has an obsession
with traffic lights which outside
of rush hours only add time to
journeys.
If drivers consider it dangerous
turning into Bridal Path Rd
from Sumner, they should slow
down, open their eyes and
exercise some judgement instead
of making it someone else’s
problem. Perhaps a warning sign
for traffic turning from Sumner
into Bridal Path Rd may reduce
the risk?
Readers respond to
Richard Suggate’s Soap
Box column about the
Diamond Harbour Ferry:
Carolyn Nicol, of Diamond
Harbour
For many years preearthquake
I used the bus and
ferry services and loved it.
When returning home I would
catch the express bus to Lyttelton
and this bus was guaranteed
to catch the ferry. Since the
earthquakes the express bus
has been removed, Colombo St
is congested at peak times, so
coming home via the bus and
ferry services has just become
unworkable for me.
Lyttelton Port of Christchurch
appears to have a plan to make
the bus/ferry connection as
unpleasant as possible – no
doubt to encourage ferry and bus
users that a shift of the ferry will
be better. I don’t think the ferry
links well with the bus timetable.
National List MP and
Rapaki Runanga member
Nuk Korako responds to
Archie Laird’s letter on
June 1 about dredging in
Lyttelton Harbour:
You’re correct that dredging
here is not new, but Rapaki
Runanga’s concern is where the
dredge spoil is dumped.
The runanga would like to see
the dump site located further
offshore. For years we’ve seen
our mahinga kai beds desecrated
by mud carried up the harbour
from dredging residue created by
inner harbour dumping.
The only mahinga kai shellfish
beds now left are cockles, and
these are already at risk because
of mud build-up. Paua and
mussels have now disappeared
from our kainga foreshore.
Depositing dredge spoil away
from the harbour will strike the
appropriate balance between
protecting our harbour as a
mahinga kai and ensuring it
remains a gateway port.
The city council was
asking people to submit
ideas on what Sumner’s
new community centre,
library and museum should
be named. Bay Harbour
News asked its readers
what they would like the
facility to be called:
Maria Simmonds – The name
I suggest for the new Sumner
Community Centre is The
Sumner Hub.
This is the name given to
the centre created at the old
Sumner School hall during
the earthquakes. The hub
was the place where you could
get information, water, public
meetings were held, support in
many forms including the tent
school and care for the elderly.
Many of these services have
continued when the Sumner
community group moved to the
old police station. It will resonant
with many people as it was the
place where we all came together
to help each other out during
those difficult months and years.
Bay Harbour News asked
its readers whether they
thought Recliffs needed
more social housing after
the city council began
demolishing Avonheath
Courts:
Gerard Liddell – The social
housing at Redcliffs was an
exemplar of good planning. The
residents are home enjoying the
outlook from their location far
more than those in the majority
of houses in the area that are
vacant for most of the daytime
working hours.
In addition, the residents
of social housing have more
mobility limitations and the and
the easy access to the Redcliffs
shops is more valuable for them.
