Big plans for Little River<br />

A LOWER speed limit, a<br />
skate park and a medical<br />
facility are among the things<br />
Little River residents want to<br />
see in their township.<br />
The Little River Issues<br />
Working Party has gathered<br />
feedback from residents on<br />
what they wanted to see in the<br />
area.<br />
Now a final plan has been<br />
drawn up, to try and make<br />
some of them happen.<br />

past, suggested<br />
great<br />
ideas for the<br />
community, but they could<br />
often be lost.<br />
“The purpose of this<br />
project is really to co-ordinate<br />
all those projects and put<br />
them altogether in one<br />
place.”<br />
Some kind of medical<br />
facility, and a lower speed<br />
limit along State Highway 75,<br />
through the township were<br />
the main things residents<br />
wanted to see happen.<br />
Currently the speed<br />
limit through the township<br />
is 70km/h, but residents have<br />
been battling for about 10<br />

years to have it lowered to<br />
50km/h.<br />
The Love Little River group<br />
presented a petition with<br />
more than 1000 signatures to<br />
the New Zealand Transport<br />
Agency in November to try<br />
and get it lowered.<br />
The transport agency has<br />
since said it could lower the<br />
limit to 60km/h, but no lower.<br />
Ms Reeves said other suggestions<br />
included a skate park,<br />
playgrounds and murals.<br />
Community development<br />
adviser Fiona Nicol said<br />
because there was a set plan,<br />
it was more likely to get the<br />
backing of the Akaroa-Wairewa<br />
Community Board.<br />
“It’s easier for community<br />
boards to fund stuff which is<br />
clearer. Instead of the ideas<br />
being all out here, they’re<br />
just streamlined through one<br />
plan.”<br />
The next step was to flesh<br />
out the projects in more<br />
detail.<br />
Ms Reeves said the group<br />
hoped for extra developments<br />
to be made in two months<br />
time.<br />
