THE REDCLIFFS School
community has described
yesterday’s long-awaited decision
as “a great outcome.”
The school will move from its
closed site on Main Rd to nearby
Redcliffs Park in mid-2019 – a
distance of about 300m.
“This has been a huge process
for our Redcliffs community and
we are thrilled that we now have
certainty and are able to start
planning for our new school,”
principal Rose McInerney said.
She was in Wellington yesterday
for Education Minister Hekia
Parata’s announcement.
The school was closed after
the 2011 earthquake and has
been temporarily based at the
van Asch Deaf Education Centre
since then.
Parent Chelsea Halliwell told
Bay Harbour News she’s relieved
to finally have an outcome and is
happy the school will stay within
Redcliffs.
“We’re so excited to be going
back to Redcliffs, the community
has been dying to get its school
back and now we’ve finally got
the news that we are going back
and know where we’re going,” she
said.
IF OUR city councillors have their
heads screwed on right, they’ll ban
freedom campers from French
Farm, Wainui and Windsport Park
in Ferrymead (see page 5).
People who live there or use them
have justifiably had a gutsful of the
mess left by freedom campers.
Freedom camping also has a
snowball affect; the more that turn
up, the more that follow.
If they were clean and tidy and
took the mess away with them,
then freedom camping wouldn’t be
a problem. But unfortunately, that’s
not the case.
The city council will vote today
on recommendations that a bylaw
be put in place at the above sites,
and also Addington Park and the
Lower Styx Mouth.
The smart money is on councillors
agreeing to the bylaw. The
problem is the freedom campers
will simply go somewhere else.
Community to have say on
Diamond Harbour plans
• By Annabelle Dick
THREE OPTIONS to
improve Diamond Harbour’s
problematic traffic and footpath
layout have been presented to
the community.
The Diamond Harbour Community
Association and city
council staff have been working
together to formulate a plan to
enhance the village following
the earthquakes.
On Saturday, the city council
revealed two options for the village
centre layout and a plan for
a pathway.
“The great majority of people
thought one or the other, or a
combination of the two designs
of the village centre, were a very
good step forward to separating
out the cars and pedestrians
and there was overwhelming
support to proceed,” association
chairman Richard Suggate said.
The options have been created
to improve pedestrian and
traffic flow within the village
centre.
In January, the city council
and the association decided
transport layout was a priority,
HAVE YOUR SAY: Diamond Harbour residents were
consulted on village layout design options on Saturday.
as visitors to the village got
confused.
As part of the draft, the road
system will be a changed and a
footpath network will be built
to connect Diamond Harbour’s
key facilities.
The footpath would link
the Godley House site, the
cemetery, Stoddart Point
Reserve, the shops, the
community and medical
centres, Stoddart Cottage, the
play centre and local sports
clubs.
More than 70 people attended
the meeting and shared their
feedback with city council staff.
“We have a couple more
weeks for feedback then the
planner will put together a
final concept plan for us and
we’ll take it to the council for
implementation,” Mr Suggate
said.
Budgets and costs weren’t
shared within the proposals.
The city council has allocated
$15,000 as part of its long term
plan to be spent on planning
for the village and Mr Suggate
hoped work would begin in the
next financial year.
The outlines of the other
eight projects supported by the
association were also available
at the meeting for residents to
leave feedback on.
Mr Suggate said the next
priority on the list was Godley
House.
In Brief
NAME CHANGES WANTED
THe city council will decide
on whether two Duvauchelle
reserves will be renamed in a
meeting today. Akaroa/Wairewa
Community Board wants the
city council to approve the name
changes of Bayview Reserve
to Ron Nuttall Reserve, and
Duvauchelle Reserve to Marshall
Reserve. Ron Nuttall was a
long-time Bayview Cres holiday
homeowner who promoted, coordinated
and did most of the
planting in the reserve. Marshall
Reserve is named in recognition
of the Marshall family who
carried out the initial subdivision
of the area and were involved
in community events and
committees over the years.
SMOKE-FREE CAFES
Cafe Metro Ferrymead and
Coffee Culture Sumner have
gone smoke-free for the next
six months. They are two of 20
Christchurch cafes that are taking
part in the Fresh Air Project
that will see outdoor dining areas
completely smoke-free in bid to
improve the health of customers
and staff. The project is a partnership
between the Cancer Society
and the Canterbury District
Health Board, and endorsed by
the city council. Compliance with
the policy is voluntary and not
enforced by the city council.
Work under way
to reduce flood
risk in Heathcote
WORK IS under way to reduce
the flood risk in Heathcote Valley
downstream of Bridle Path Rd.
The work is being carried out
in three stages and should reduce
the risk of flooding for properties
around Flavell and Marsden Sts.
It should also help reduce the
risk to other nearby areas which
flooded in March 2014.
The first stage of work involves
construction of a pipeline to divert
stormwater from the Heathcote
Valley Drain to the lower
Matuku Waterway.
The pipeline is being built in
stages, starting at Cooks Lane and
working up Bridle Path Rd.
Bridle Path Rd will be down to
one lane at times during its construction
and there will be no access
from Bridle Path Rd to Flavell
St from early to mid-November
until late December.
Marsden St access to Bridle
Path Rd will be closed in early
January until late February.
The next stage of the flood mitigation
works involves widening
the Cooks Lane Waterway.
The design for this project is
still being worked on but it will
involve some small scale excavation
and replanting.
This work is due to be completed
late 2017.
THERE’S A mixture of
long-standing members and
newcomers who have been
selected in the chair and
deputy chair roles on the
newly-established community
boards.
The community boards’
elected members were officially
sworn in at the end of last
month.
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board members
elected Central Ward representative
Sally Buck as chairwoman
and fellow central representative
Jake McLellan as deputy.
Ms Buck was a city councillor
for five terms, from 1989-2013.
Ms Buck said she is focused
on keeping the community at
the centre of decisions that will
impact them.
“I want to ensure that the
community’s voice is heard and
that the board works together
to get the best outcome for the
community,” Ms Buck said.
Meanwhile, Mr McLellan is
new to local government.
Heathcote Ward representative
Darrell Latham said both
the chair and deputy will represent
the three wards well in spite
of both standing in the Central
Ward.
“It was a discussion across all
wards that they be offered the
positions. I think it’s great that
Sally will be the board chair – she
brings a base of good experience
and Jake McLellan is a younger
guy so we have an excellent balance
between experience and a
Mix of experience in community boards
voice for the youth,” he said.
In the Banks Peninsula
Community Board, members
elected Lyttelton subdivision
representative Christine Wilson
as the chairwoman and Akaroa
subdivision representative Pam
Richardson as her deputy.
Ms Wilson was the
Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Community
Board deputy chairwoman
last term while Ms Richardson
was the chairwoman of the
Akaroa-Wairewa Community
Board.
The Banks Peninsula Community
Board is an amalgamation
of the two former boards.
Ms Wilson said the members
seemed confident they were best
suited for the roles because of
their experience.
“It’s hard to speak for the
other members but obviously
there is some confidence there
so that’s good and we just really
want to work together as a
team, and it’s going to be an
interesting time because we’re
used to having two boards and
now we only have the one,” she
said.
Ms Wilson said they have
some hurdles to overcome but
are committed to representing
the whole peninsula.
“I’d like to do my best to
ensure that because residents
might be feeling wary because
there’s one board now, we really
do want to work to make sure
everyone feels like they’re being
fairly represented.”
Both boards will have three
meetings before they break for
Christmas.
Smuggler’s Wife, Book #4
The Cloud Leopard’s Daughter
by Deborah Challinor
On the gold fields of the colonies, enemies are easily made.
In the confines of a ship, they can turn deadly. For readers
of Bryce Courtenay’s POTATO FACTORY, Philippa Gregory
and Tracy Chevalier. When Kitty and Rian Farrell sail their
schooner Katipo III into Dunedin Harbour in 1863, they are
on tenterhooks. The new Otago goldfields have attracted allcomers,
including their friend Wong Fu from Ballarat, who has
sent a message for their help. To their surprise, Wong Fu reveals he
is more than a mere fortune seeker - he is in fact a Cloud Leopard tong
master and his daughter, Bao, has been kidnapped and taken to opium-ridden
China. Kitty and Rian agree to retrieve the missing Bao, but as they sail closer to their
quarry the stakes jump dramatically. And little do they know that the deadliest threat
lies in their midst. The Cloud’s Leopard’s Daughter takes us through dangerous and
unpredictable shoals of love, lust, greed and opium, in search of not one, but two,
fiery yet vulnerable women - puppets in other people’s calculated games.
Marlborough Man: A Quintessentially Kiwi
Story of an Accidental Wine-Industry Trailblazer
by Allan Scott
The true story of the rise of Marlborough and NZ Sauvignon Blanc, told by one of its
pioneers, winemaker Allan Scott, as both personal and professional memoir, fully
illustrated. The remarkable story of Marlborough wine, from the planting of the first
vines to the global success of New Zealand’s billion-dollar Sauvignon Blanc industry,
is also the very personal story of winemaker Allan Scott. As a young farm hand he
helped plant the first vines, going on to help Montana and Corbans establish their
sauvignon vineyards, and then to found his own hugely successful family winery. He
knows the real stories, the mistakes and the triumphs, the heroes and villains, and
how an unlikely region of New Zealand’s South Island became a varietal powerhouse
and major export industry. A lot of how it happened came down to luck, along
with perserverance and bloody-mindedness, and some extraordinary ingenuity that
revolutionised winemaking. Setting the record straight, as well as telling a personal
saga of risking it all and keeping a family together, Allan recounts his story with great
humour and modesty. With a rich photographic archive and new photography from
award winning photographer Patrick Reynold, this is a fine memoir with real body
and taste.
Ban on freedom campers likely
• By Annabelle Dick
FRENCH FARM, Wainui and
Windsport Park could be free
of freedom camping for good
if the city council pass the
recommended bylaw changes.
Today, the city council will
decide if they will make amendments
to the Freedom Camping
Bylaw 2015 to permanently ban
freedom camping from those
sites as well as Addington Park
and Lower Styx River Mouth.
Deputy mayor Andrew
Turner, who was also chairman
of the hearings panel that made
the report on the recommendations,
said the five sites were
problematic due to freedom
campers.
“A number of the problems
last summer were directly
connected with the non-self
contained freedom camping,”
he said.
“Clearly there was a need
to get these changes through
before the start of the summer
season this year. We want the
changes of the bylaw in place
by December 1 so they can take
affect before summer.”
Freedom camping was allowed
at the sites up until
March when city council chief
executive Karleen Edwards was
forced to temporarily ban it
after reports freedom campers
were defecating at the sites, over
staying their allowed time, and
overcrowding car parks.
City councillors approved
that the temporary changes be
made permanent in July and the
city council has been seeking
public submissions on the bylaw
changes.
Fifty-five out of 72 public
submissions, expressed general
support for changes that would
see freedom camping banned at
the sites.
City council figures showed
that Windsport Park could have
up to 106 freedom camping
vehicles there, while on average
it had eight.
That was the highest of the
five sites across the city.
People trying to access the
Windsport Club were having
ROCK WALL UNDER WAY
Work is under way to build a rock
protection wall on Heberden Ave
which has closed the corridor.
Fulton Hogan will be modifying
existing services and building
a 1.5m rock protection wall on
the edge of the existing footpath
for the length of the site. There
will be a digger, concrete trucks
and pump excavators on site.
Pedestrians will be affected and
there will be detours in place.
Work is expected to take until
November 30.
ROAD STILL CLOSED
Cannon Hill Cres will be
closed for another week at the
intersection of Bridle Path Rd.
It’s been closed since work began
on October 26. Downer has
been undertaking road repairs
on the intersection for a month
and after stage one is finished
the crescent intersection will be
reopened. Stage two will begin
in the northbound lane of Bridle
Spotted any lonely cones?
There are a lot of lost, lonely road cones out there. We want to bring them home.
We’re tidying up the streets as the SCIRT programme winds down.
Please help us track down stray cones no longer on the job. We’ll put them back to
work, or send them off to the giant cone melting pot in the sky.
The CONEMOBILE is coming your way.
SCIRT’s CONEMOBILE is hitting the streets to collect any road cones that have gone
Our People
American architect’s mission to
Entrepreneur Camia Young, 42, settled
in Mt Pleasant in the aftermath of the
February 22, 2011, earthquake. Fraser
Walker-Pearce talks to the American
architect about her passion for rebuilding
the city
Tell me what you were doing
when you first arrived in New
Zealand?
I arrived five years ago and
was teaching architecture at the
University of Auckland. During
that time, we brought more than
1000 students to Christchurch to
help with the rebuild and I did
that until about a year or so ago.
I was flying from Christchurch
to Auckland on a Monday and
coming back on the Wednesday.
I would do that every week and I
got super tired. I loved teaching,
it was such a good time.
During your time at the
university, were you still
involved with Christchurch?
In the middle of that teaching
we did Gap Filler’s pallet pavilion,
which took place over the
course of a summer and winter.
It was up for two years, so that
was a treasure of a project. And
during setting that up, I caught
a bug – it was a good bug, but a
bug nonetheless. The bug taught
me about building communities
through building buildings. It
wasn’t about the pavilion it was
about the community around
the pavilion that made it work.
It was about a healing place for
the community to gather around
after the earthquakes.
And what after that?
Then I started a project called
Exchange Christchurch, XCHC.
X stands for exchange and CHC
is Christchurch’s airport code.
And we will be doing Exchange
Auckland, which will be XAKL
and Exchange Wellington which
will be XWLG. So there are other
initiatives coming as well. It
provides a place for people that
have lost a lot in the earthquakes,
a place to create and produce
their creative work and develop
their creative practice.
Great, so what can people see
at XCHC at the moment?
At the moment we have a
ENTREPRENEUR: Camia Young moved to Christchurch to use
her skills as an architect to help communities rebuild after the
earthquakes.
jeweller, a painter, a composer,
a few photographers, an
architectural designer and art
exhibitions that change weekly.
So would you say you’ve been
quite involved with the rebuild
of the city?
I’ve been more involved in the
social side of the rebuild more
than anything. What I’ve been
doing is learning by doing while
I’m here. This will absolutely
be a 21st century city where it’s
not so much about the next big
icon, but where the people will
come first and the buildings will
be a by-product of that. I have
confidence in the people.
Right, and where in the city
are you based?
I’m mostly at the exchange
in the central city, but I own
a place out in Lyttelton. I love
Lyttelton, but I also love Sumner,
New Brighton, places with a
cool community feel. I much
prefer the speed of small than
the big city stuff, you can get
so much more done in small
communities. I actually live up in
Mt Pleasant and I quite like that.
And you have a slight accent
there – is it American?
Yes. I was born in Colorado
and those mountains still call
to me. I’m from Aspen. It’s the
Rocky Mountains that get me.
New Zealand has a really strong
connection with nature as well.
I left when I was younger and
lived in Europe for 11 years,
studied in London, then worked
in Rotterdam (Netherlands),
Paris (France), Madrid (Spain)
and Basel (Switzerland). It was
great, I was practicing there as an
architect.
help rebuild city’s communities
There must have been some
incredible projects in the likes
of Paris?
There was one project in Paris
– it’s the only time I’ve ever cried
when we lost a project. It still
hurts to this day. I fell in love
with it. It’s where I learned to
dream with the intent to realise
the dream. It’s easy to come up
with an idea, it’s expensive to
execute them.
I’d imagine it would be. Have
you been anywhere other than
America, Europe and New
Zealand?
I’m also a Brazilian resident.
My father lives there. I spend
a bit of time there and I speak
Portuguese as well. He lives in
northern Brazil. He built a selfsustaining
home in the middle
of the sand dunes. He’s lived
without electricity for the last 25
years and now has solar power.
He’s a hippy in the middle of a
desert. So he’s my inspiration for
a lot of things.
That’s pretty incredible. Do
you have a project that, once
completed, you’ll be happy to
retire and put your feet up?
No. I don’t really have an
end-game. I love seeing positive
change. And I think we’re all
inherently creative, to see that
work done is the road and the
Previously
United Travel
COMMUNITY BUILDER: XCHC is the first of many community projects Camia Young hopes to set
up around Christchurch.
end for me.
Where did you spend your
school years?
Up through to secondary
I was in Aspen, elementary
and high school. Then I did
my undergraduate at the
University of Colorado and
graduated as valedictorian and
went on to get a masters in
Los Angeles at SCIARC, the
Southern California Institute of
Architecture. In three years, I got
two masters degrees, rather than
two and a half for one masters,
which it could’ve been. Then I
practiced architecture in Europe
for 11 years, across the board
there.
Do you have any family over
here in Christchurch?
No, no family here, I fly solo.
I have lots of love. I miss them,
miss the mountains, too. But
some family has come out while
I’m here, though. Mum and dad
have been out. My sister uses
the old ‘if you don’t eat your
vegetables you won’t be able to
go visit Aunty Camia’ on her two
kids. They’re super-excited to
visit as well.
Was it always an intention of
yours to come to Christchurch?
FLY
Not at all. I was looking for
change from working in a
corporate office. As much as I
loved my life in Europe, I wanted
to find somewhere I could do
my own thing. A friend of mine
who is a Kiwi offered to bring me
in to teach at the University of
Auckland, which was about three
months before the February
22, 2011, earthquake. Then
that entire year course became
focused on the earthquake and
on Christchurch. I had never
taught and I had never been to
Christchurch, but I was looking
for a new home and so I came
a month before the course
was due to start and I walked
Christchurch for that month and
then went up to teach the course.
I knew in that month that I
would stay here. I was looking
at a couple of other countries
around the world – Brazil,
Canada – but I couldn’t do it.
What are some of your
first memories stepping into
Christchurch post-earthquake?
It was late 2011, so it was
post-apocalyptic. I thought
immediately I was in way over
my head and I thought I was
naive in the fact that I thought
I could make a difference. But
after phoning my dad about it,
I decided I would stay. I started
really walking the city and
learning as much as I possibly
could about it. I ended up getting
my visa through the job in
Auckland and now I’m here. But
that month, it was really scary
for me because I had never seen
a crisis on that scale before and I
didn’t know what to do.
Had you experienced an
earthquake before that?
I think I remember maybe one
earthquake when I was in Aspen,
but when I was in LA there was
a few. But nothing compared
to when I came here, and they
happened so often back then.
Public input
into port
projects invited
LYTTELTON PORT of
Christchurch has invited
residents to find out more about
multi-million dollar projects
happening at the port.
LPC is undertaking several major
developments including building
a new marina and proposed
dredging in the harbour.
More than 30 Lyttelton residents
and berth holders from the
inner harbour pile moorings visited
LPC’s Port Talk on Saturday
to find out about the projects.
Last month, Environment Canterbury
publicly notified LPC’s
resource consent application
to extend the existing shipping
channel in Lyttelton Harbour.
The dredging project has been
proposed to attract major international
shipping lines and accommodate
larger cargo ships.
Residents can make submissions
on the proposal through the
Environment Canterbury website
up until December 5.
LPC chief executive Peter
Davie said the proposed dredging
project represents an investment
of up to $120 million by the
company in the future viability of
the port.
LPC will also build a new
marina at the inner harbour pile
moorings next year.
Career boost for film student
• By Annabelle Dick
LYTTELTON FILM student
Fenella Bowater is ready to take
on the world after winning the
New Zealand chapter of the
International Youth Silent Film
Festival.
The 18-year-old New Zealand
Broadcasting School screen
student was the director for
student-made film An Homage.
The film crew won first place
and a $1000 prize at the New
Zealand awards on October 22
in Tauranga.
Miss Bowater is excited with
the achievement considering
she’s only just begun studying
film.
“This is our first serious
project and for me it’s the first
competition I’ve entered so that
was a big thing and obviously
incredible that we won it – that
was mind-blowing,” she said.
An Homage is a 3min silent
film based on a detective who
goes off the rails and finds himself
in a paranoid state solving a
crime case.
Each film crew had to select
music supplied by the festival
so the crew chose a horror
soundtrack for their short film.
“It was interesting we were
given music and we had to create
a film around that. But it made it
Ara students behind
harbour picnic areas
BAY HARBOUR
• By Annabelle Dick
PICNIC TABLES have been
donated by Ara Institute of
Canterbury construction
students to sit at locations
around Lyttelton Harbour.
Five tables will be spread
around the new Godley Head
campground, on Quail Island
and on top of Mt Herbert.
A small hut will also be
installed at Packhorse Saddle
during summer.
The tables were built by Ara’s
construction and infrastructure
vocational pathway students
who have teamed up with the
Department of Conservation.
“It is fantastic for us and for
Ara, something we would have
struggled to achieve without
their help and the sponsors who
helped supply materials,” DOC
operations ranger Murray Lane
said.
Ara’s construction and
infrastructure vocational
pathway students build tool
sheds and bench seats to practice
their skills.
The tool sheds have been sold
on Trade Me and the bench seats
LOADING UP: Ara construction students help stack picnic tables
for the Department of Conservation to install around Lyttelton
Harbour.
distributed around the campus.
However, tutor Nigel Jamieson
saw the potential for the tool
sheds to be converted into
DOC huts and contacted the
organisation.
“Engaging the students on a
real life project made learning
very effective,” he said.
“This is a great relationship
with DOC that has a lot of
potential for future projects.”
Mr Lane was not only
interested in the huts, but was
also keen to make use of five
bench seats and make this an
ongoing project.
“Further down the line, we will
add tables to the Banks Peninsula
and other tracks,” he said.
finds its way home
AN ornamental screen
damaged during the
earthquakes has been restored
and placed in St Saviour’s at
Holy Trinity.
The oak-framed ‘reredos’ – a
decoration which sits behind
the altar – fell off the wall of St
Saviour’s and has been restored
with the help of a city council
heritage grant and funding
from the Lottery Grants Board.
St Saviour’s was built in
west Lyttelton in 1885 and was
later relocated to Cathedral
Grammar School in 1976.
The church building was
moved back to Lyttelton
in 2013 with the help of a
$143,000 heritage incentive
grant to replace the demolished
Holy Trinity Church.
A number of items salvaged
from Holy Trinity were
incorporated into St Saviour’s,
which was renamed St
Saviour’s at Holy Trinity.
The 100-year-old ornamental
screen covers the wall at the
back of the altar and was built
in memory of the late wife of
the first vicar of St Saviour’s.
The next generation of
landscaping excellence for Gooms
The biennial Landscaping New Zealand
‘Landscapes of Distinction Awards’
continue to be the industry yardstick
for excellence in the fields of landscape
design, construction, horticulture and
maintenance.
The recent gala awards event held at the
Latimer Rydges Hotel in Christchurch in
August saw Goom Landscapes Limited
awarded a sensational haul of awards
across various projects and categories.
They include 1 bronze, 1 silver, 4 gold, Best
Landscape Sustainability, Best Landscape
Design and the penultimate Supreme
Award, Landscape of the Year 2016, for The
Green Residence in Christchurch.
Landscaping New Zealand Awards
judges commented, “We were looking
for really good use of space and supreme
quality design, construction and planting.
These Awards give the public inspiration
regarding what can be achieved in their
own gardens, but more importantly, the
Awards are about what our professions
can do and the standards expected when
employing a landscape professional”.
This is the second time Gooms have
taken out the ‘Landscape of the Year’
Award. Having won back in 2004 date
under the direction of retired founder,
Chris Goom. Fast forward 12 years with a
completely new team under the guidance
of son, Tim Goom is testimony to the
heritage and pedigree of design innovation
and construction excellence that has
become synonymous with the Goom
brand.
“These Awards results are a combination
of teamwork, dedication to the client
outcomes and basic down to earth hard
work”, says Tim Goom. “Our difference we
believe rests with our specialist project
managers and construction teams working
seamlessly with our highly experienced
and innovative landscape architects,
ensuring that every detail is managed”.
Goom Landscapes have operations in
Christchurch, Auckland and Wanaka,
working on both domestic and commercial
projects. These Awards recognized work
across both these sectors including the
stunning new Tait Electonics Campus
Christchurch receiving Gold Awards for
Construction and Horticulture respectively
as well as Best Landscape Sustainability.
Know the rules of boating
Pirate’s Corner
• BY GARY MANCH,
News
NAVIGATIONAL SAFETY OFFICER,
LYTTELTON
NOW IS the perfect time to
prepare for the boating season
which is fast approaching.
A national programme run by
Maritime New Zealand called
Safer Boating Week will run
from October 14-21. The purpose
of the week is to focus all you
keen boaties out there on key
recreational boating safety meas-
Fashion
You must ensure that all of
your life jackets are in order and
ures. This is timely, as you all get ready for the new season. This is
your vessels and gear ready for an absolute must.
the start of Canterbury’s boating If you have an inflatable life
season which traditionally begins jacket, make sure you check the
at Labour Day weekend.
cylinder for corrosion. Remember:
if in doubt, chuck it out and
A key message that you will
see a lot of is: Prep, check, know. get a new one. Make sure the
Gardening
What does this mean practice, cylinder is screwed in firmly. It
you ask?
is also a good idea to inflate the
Before you head out on the bladder manually and leave it for
water you should prepare your
boat. This means getting it serviced
and you scanning the boat
for damage or wear. Ensure all
the bungs are watertight and that
the cables for the steering operate
Motoring
freely. All of your boat’s fixtures
and fittings including any ropes
should be good working order.
Check all of your gear; this
doesn’t mean checking your
fishing gear, although this is
important. I do worry that this
gets more priority.
24 hours and, if you find the next
day that it is deflated, either bin
it or get it to an authorised repair
centre to be fixed.
While you’re doing your prep
and check, make sure you have
alternative propulsion such as
spare oars, or a small auxiliary
motor. Ensure that there are life
jackets for everyone on board
your boat and that you have a
first-aid kit, anchor, knife, extra
fuel, tools, spare bung, ropes
and throw line, fire extinguisher,
bucket, bailer and torch.
Make sure your VHF radio is
fitted and working and ensure
that you have visited www.
retune.co.nz to see the changes
to maritime radio frequencies.
There were frequency changes on
October 1, 2016, however, channel
16 remains the same.
Here’s the last bit: Know the
rules. If you are going on the
water – no matter what sort of
vessel you are in – and you’re in
charge of the boat, then it’s up to
you to know the rules. Simple!
Boaties out there who know
the rules and go boating safely,
do not want to see people tarnishing
our boating community’s
good reputation and putting
others at risk. My advice this
summer is that you learn and
comply with the new Navigation
Safety Bylaw.
Have fun and be careful out
there.
Invest in rail long-term
Green MP
Eugenie Sage
writes about
Lyttelton Port
Company’s
new port
facility and
proposed dredging project
It was interesting to attend
the opening of Lyttelton Port
Company’s new Midland Port at
Rolleston recently.
The 27ha inland port is to act
as a distribution hub to organise,
store, and shift container cargo
to the north, south, and west. It’s
a great investment by both LPC
and KiwiRail.
With new rail links to the site,
Midland Port should help reduce
congestion and heavy trucks on
Brougham St. Each train laden
with containers running between
Rolleston and Lyttelton removes
the equivalent of 80 heavy truck
trips. As container cargo volumes
increase, LPC expects to run
three to four trains daily.
Moving more people and
goods by rail reduces climate pollution
as well as congestion. We
need a shift in transport policy,
away from the Government’s
billion dollar spend-up on new
motorways, to investing more in
rail. KiwiRail needs more capital
for long-term investment in rail
infrastructure and rolling stock.
The development of Midland
Port, a large expanse of asphalt to
stack containers, new rail sidings,
stormwater systems, facilities for
container storage and repair, and
offices took 20 months from bare
land to operation. It’s an example
of how the Resource Management
Act works for well-planned
developments.
LPC has recently applied for
resource consents to deepen, widen,
and lengthen by 6.5km the
navigation channel in Lyttelton
Harbour. It plans to dump more
than 18 million cu m of spoil off
Godley Head.
As well, hundreds of tonnes of
rock are to be blasted from the
cliffs above the Lyttelton-Sumner
Rd to provide rock for LPC’s
reclamation of Te Awaparahi Bay.
Healthy populations of native
plants and habitat for lizards
and other native wildlife will be
blasted to bits.
There are commercial benefits
for LPC in having bigger container
ships in port and a bigger
reclamation. The council-owned
company needs to consider how
it compensates the community
and the harbour for the environmental
impacts of dredging
and spoil dumping, and the
destruction of the bluffs, currently
a distinctive feature of the
Whakaraupō harbour landscape.
Import impresses
for Sumner
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
SUMNER WILL be thankful their
new 23-year-old import decided to
move to New Zealand on a whim
a month ago – but they will rue
only signing him for
six months.
Originally from
Middlesbrough,
Jordan Leech fancies
himself as an allrounder
on the cricket
pitch, but due to a
back injury, he’s stuck
to batting for the first couple of
matches.
He has scored 58 runs in the last
two matches for his new club, and
has been in the nets practicing his
fast balls for when his back is right
to open the bowling.
He moved from the United
Kingdom last month to join
Sumner from the club he’s played
on and off for since he was five,
Normanby Hall.
“It’s funny, I wasn’t going to
come over at all, but it was all sort
of last minute. I went through an
agent and found that Sumner were
looking for an English lad and
now here I am,” Leech said.
When Leech was 19, he played
in Melbourne for half a year, but
said it was easy to pick which city
he preferred.
“Christchurch is a little bit better
I have to say. New Zealanders are
a lot nicer than Australians,” he
said.
Included in his six-month
contract is accommodation
with a family in Redcliffs,
which Leech said is ideal for his
part-time contracting work and
groundsman work at St Leonards
Square.
“It’s great because, basically,
I’m working doing contracting a
couple of days a week and I’m also
doing the grounds at St Leonards
as well, which is something I’ve
never done before and really
enjoy,” he said.
Cricket is in Leech’s family. His
father played in New Zealand
for Wellington between 1995
and 1998, and his brother is an
up-and-coming fast bowler in
Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
“My brother won the best fast
bowler in England award for
under-15 and he’s looking at a spot
in the England under-16 squad,”
he said.
SPORTS
HOWZAT?: Heathcote’s Charlie Grey, wicket keeper James Rennie and Matt Mealings
appeal for a wicket from behind the stumps in Sunday’s match against Hornby. Played
at Heathcote Domain, the home side’s bowlers started strongly to see the first five
Hornby batsmen out for 60 runs. But they struggled seeing out the middle and lower
order, allowing Hornby to settle for 150 all out. When the home side went out to bat, club
secretary Paul Corliss said they couldn’t gain much traction and Hornby won the game by
four runs.
Point surf’s Tim Gould wins long board title
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
POINT SURF Team’s Tim
Gould is Canterbury’s
primary schools long board
champion.
He won the title at the
primary schools surf champs,
hosted by Point Surf Team at
Sumner Beach on Sunday.
More than 50 young
surfers, some from as far away
as Waikuku, competed in the
championship.
Tim’s teammate Jack Tyro
was pipped by North Wai
Boardriders club member
Tom Robertson in the year
5 and under boy’s and girl’s
section.
In other results for Point
Surf Team, Ruby Armstrong
won bronze in the year 6 and
7 girl’s section, Will Jamieson
was fourth in the long board
and Tim was fourth in the
year 8 boy’s section.
Contest organiser Steve
Tyro said the weather was
“perfect” for the competition
and the day was more about
giving the kids a platform to
work on their skills.
“There was a good mix of
kids from Waikuku through
to Sumner in all the finals
and they all get on really well
with each other . . . clowning
around like kids do with each
other. It was good to see the
co-operation between the
three clubs,” Tyro said.
“The surf hung in there,
the wind was off-shore and
it couldn’t have been a better
day. The surf wasn’t too big or
small for the kids,” he said.
warmer we all spend more time out
in the sun.
Now is the time to check our sunscreen
supply, whether there is plenty and the
expiry date.
WHY IS SUNBURN SO BAD?
Sunburn can lead to melanoma and
other skin cancers later in life and should
be avoided.
Research continues into how skin cancers
are formed, and what type of UV exposure
has the worst effects. Sunburn is painful
and potentially deadly, so cover up to avoid
getting sunburnt.
Find out more about skin cancer.
HOW CAN I BE SUNSMART
Being SunSmart is about protecting skin
and eyes from damaging UV radiation.
From September to April when outdoors:
Slip into a long-sleeved shirt and into the
shade. Generally, fabrics with a tighter weave
and darker colours will give you greater
protection from the sun. Some clothing is
sold with a UV radiation Protection Factor
(UPF) rating. Clothing with a UPF of 50+
offers superior protection and could be an
ideal choice for outdoor workers.
Slop on plenty of broad-spectrum (filters
both UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen with a
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30.
Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before
going outdoors and reapply every two
hours. Reapply more frequently if sweating
or swimming.
Slap on a hat with a wide-brim or a cap
with flaps. This will help reduce the risk of
sunburn to your face, ears and neck. These
are the most common places where we get
sunburnt.
Wrap on a pair of close-fitting sunglasses.
When buying sunglasses, look for the words
‘good UV protection’ on the label or swing
tag.
Remember to always protect skin and eyes
when you’re in the mountains, or around
reflective surfaes like snow and water, when
UV levels are damaging.
SUNSMART MYTHS
1) I can’t get sunburnt on a cloudy day.
False: You can still get sunburnt on a cloudy
day. This is because UV radiation can get
through light cloud cover, so unprotected
skin can still be damaged.
2) Temperature gives me a good idea of the
the chances of getting sunburnt.
False: The heat from the sun is caused by
infrared radiation, not ultraviolet (UV)
radiation. UV radiation can still be high
even on a cool day, when infrared radiation
is low. Just think about how easy it is to get
sunburnt on the skifields when it can be
very cold.
3) I’m windburnt not sunburnt.
False: Your windburn is sunburn caused by
ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The wind may
make you feel cooler but UV radiation can
still be high even on a windy day. Just think
about why you don’t get windburn if you’re
out in the dark on a windy night.
4) Sunscreen blocks out all UV radiation.
False: No sunscreen filters out all UV
radiation – that’s why you need to limit your
time in the sun no matter what sunscreen
you’re using and cover up.
5) Getting badly sunburnt before the age of
20 increases my risk of getting melanoma
skin cancer later on.
True: If you have a history of one or more
sunburns before you turn 20, research
suggests you have a much higher chance of
getting melanoma skin cancer as you age.
6) Wearing a t-shirt in the water is as sun
protective as a rash shirt.
False: A wet t-shirt may offer only half the
protection it does when it is dry. If you are
going to be in the water, a rash shirt and
sunscreen is a good form of protection. A
full body wetsuit gives better protection.
