Wednesday November 2 2016 BAY HARBOUR PAGE 21 Import impresses for Sumner • By Fraser Walker-Pearce SUMNER WILL be thankful their new 23-year-old import decided to move to New Zealand on a whim a month ago – but they will rue only signing him for six months. Originally from Middlesbrough, Jordan Leech fancies himself as an allrounder on the cricket pitch, but due to a back injury, he’s stuck to batting for the first couple of matches. He has scored 58 runs in the last two matches for his new club, and has been in the nets practicing his fast balls for when his back is right to open the bowling. He moved from the United Kingdom last month to join Sumner from the club he’s played on and off for since he was five, Normanby Hall. “It’s funny, I wasn’t going to come over at all, but it was all sort of last minute. I went through an agent and found that Sumner were looking for an English lad and now here I am,” Leech said. When Leech was 19, he played in Melbourne for half a year, but said it was easy to pick which city he preferred. “Christchurch is a little bit better I have to say. New Zealanders are a lot nicer than Australians,” he said. Included in his six-month contract is accommodation with a family in Redcliffs, which Leech said is ideal for his part-time contracting work and groundsman work at St Leonards Square. “It’s great because, basically, I’m working doing contracting a couple of days a week and I’m also doing the grounds at St Leonards as well, which is something I’ve never done before and really enjoy,” he said. Cricket is in Leech’s family. His father played in New Zealand for Wellington between 1995 and 1998, and his brother is an up-and-coming fast bowler in Yorkshire, United Kingdom. “My brother won the best fast bowler in England award for under-15 and he’s looking at a spot in the England under-16 squad,” he said. Point surf’s Tim Gould wins long board title • By Fraser Walker-Pearce POINT SURF Team’s Tim Gould is Canterbury’s primary schools long board champion. He won the title at the primary schools surf champs, hosted by Point Surf Team at Sumner Beach on Sunday. More than 50 young surfers, some from as far away as Waikuku, competed in the championship. Tim’s teammate Jack Tyro was pipped by North Wai Boardriders club member Tom Robertson in the year 5 and under boy’s and girl’s section. In other results for Point Surf Team, Ruby Armstrong won bronze in the year 6 and 7 girl’s section, Will Jamieson was fourth in the long board and Tim was fourth in the year 8 boy’s section. Contest organiser Steve Tyro said the weather was “perfect” for the competition and the day was more about giving the kids a platform to work on their skills. “There was a good mix of kids from Waikuku through to Sumner in all the finals and they all get on really well with each other . . . clowning around like kids do with each other. It was good to see the co-operation between the three clubs,” Tyro said. “The surf hung in there, the wind was off-shore and it couldn’t have been a better day. The surf wasn’t too big or small for the kids,” he said.
