And I’ll challenge anyone to find spelling, grammatical or punctuation errors in Murdoch’s book. He’s a former school teacher and of the old school so to speak. Which reminds me. A few years ago I was having an ale in a Ferrymead bar. A young staff member told me she was training to be a school teacher. “I hope you can teach your pupils how to spell,” I said. She laughed: “Teach them to spell? Wednesday November 23 2016 BAY HARBOUR PAGE 3 News Cob Cottage to be restored OPTIONS TO repair Ferrymead’s historic Cob Cottage will be revealed next week. City council staff are expected to present ways in which the historic settlers’ cottage can be repaired to the Linwood- Central-Heathcote Community Board. Cob Cottage was significantly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, but repairs were put on hold until Ferrymead Bridge could be fixed. The Main Rd building is tucked away next to the Mt Pleasant Yacht Club. The estimated cost of repair is $181,690. Christchurch Heritage Trust chairwoman Dr Anna Crighton said it will be a welcoming sight to see the cottage restored to its former glory. “It’s very significant because everybody knows and loves this building. Whether they’re going to work or to the beach – it’s an iconic landmark for the area,” she said. The cottage is owned by the city council and falls into Heritage New Zealand’s Historic Place Category 2. It was insured for $109,800. The cottage was built by James Penfold in the early 1860s. The narrow road leads to Rapaki Track. The restrictions would run along the left side of the road from Centaurus Rd to Montgomery Tce, and on the right hand side on the top stretch of the road. Montgomery Tce would also have restrictions on the left hand side of the road leading to Erewhon Tce. It has been operating out of Trinity Hall on Winchester St until repairs could be undertaken to the earthquake-damaged 35 London St building. The Lyttelton Library Working Party has reviewed and provided input into the location, services and relocation logistics for temporary library services for the community. ROAD CLOSURE Beachville Rd will be closed at the weekend for the ASB Summer Starter fun run. The road will be closed, affecting pedestrians, cyclists and property access on Saturday. It will also be closed to vehicles and detours will be in place. The road will open again on Sunday.
