Author recounts stories of past and<br />

JANE ROBERTSON’S five years<br />

of research has paid off as her<br />

book about Lyttelton <strong>Harbour</strong>’s<br />

history is about to be released.<br />

Ms Robertson’s book, Head<br />

of the <strong>Harbour</strong>, gives a timeline<br />

of the area from Teddington to<br />

Governors <strong>Bay</strong> and recounts<br />

stories from past and present day<br />

residents.<br />

The book talks about the<br />

formation of the landscape, local<br />

fauna and flora and Maori and<br />

European settlement.<br />

“It started off as a little project<br />

and I thought I’d interview some<br />

of the older residents in Governors<br />

<strong>Bay</strong> to get some record of<br />

their stories,” she said.<br />

Her book is being endorsed<br />

and launched by Heathcote<br />

Valley-born historian Gordon<br />

Ogilvie on Sunday.<br />

He has published several<br />

award-winning books on the<br />

Port Hills and Banks Peninsula’s<br />

history.<br />

The idea occurred to Ms Robertson<br />

to write a book as there<br />

were no other publications that<br />

told such an extensive history of<br />

the harbour head.<br />

“Some people have written<br />

family histories and there are<br />

other books available but there<br />

hasn’t been anything that’s covered<br />

the whole area and brought<br />

it all together. I think people<br />

are looking forward to having it<br />

documented in one place,” Ms<br />

Robertson<br />

Two hundred copies of the<br />

book have already been prepurchased.<br />

It’s taken her five years to compile<br />

the book. Ms Robertson said<br />

it was a large feat but managed to<br />

source the information through<br />

many different means.<br />

“I got into archival research<br />

using old newspapers, the museum<br />

library, resources that were<br />

available as well as unpublished<br />

materials. Another primary<br />

source was diaries and letters<br />

from local families,” she said.<br />

While undertaking research,<br />

she uncovered some interesting<br />

finds which she says are included<br />

in the book.<br />
